Great power, light weight
I've gigged with this mixer for 2 years straight at Frat parties, weddings, and bars. The thing has taken a couple of 3 ft falls on its side, working in 90 degree heat in the sun, and working on a not so stable wooden stage many, many times. It has worked flawlessly through it all and was the best purchase our band has made in terms of value for enabling us to take any gig knowing that our sound will be enough. We have run vocals, bass, keyboards, and drum mics through it on all inputs along with an mp3 player for set breaks and it has been perfect. The thing is an all plastic shell but it is a tank. Great product, would replace it with another if it got stolen or somehow finally bit the dust.

Oh wow I love this PA mixer. Don't need powered speakers.
I bought this to replace the Yamaha pa mixing head that went belly up after years and years of service. As my Yamaha aged it lost a lot of it's high end but still was very usable with adjusting the knobs. So with this new one it is so great to have my highend back. The low end, the mid, and the high all work very well. Low End meaning bass sounds or low sounds and the mid meaning middle sounds and high end means high and clean and clear sounds. I have other boxes I put vocal and music through so I don't use the built in effects - I got the sound I want with those boxes. So I am not helpful in regards to the built in effects.UPDATE: I am now using the built in effects and they work and sound great !!!

A good product
Just picked up a unit for an outdoor event and it delivered as expected. Sounds great and powerful - I beleive the 2 x 500 Watts rating. On the input side I did not find anything more to ask for, it is indeed very well endowed. I am holding back one star because I expected a more versatile power supply spec - swichable or free voltage supply to handle both US and International power supply as many others now do.

Great unit
Great unit. I use this for my band, I run an SM58 for lead vocal (use the mixer's reverb and compression a little on that channel), an SM58 close-mic on my Princeton Reverb, and put the bass directly into the mixer (generous amount of compression and EQ). Plenty loud, will run people out of the room, although that could just be our music. Highly recommended, very light and easy to set up and break down.

I was disappointed over the cheap feel of the knobs themselves
I purchased this to replace a cheaper unit that was becoming unreliable. I did a lot of research before purchasing this because I can't afford to buy something that won't last. My first impression is that I need a case (which I have since bought) because of the thin plastic casing that surrounds the mixer. As I checked out the control knobs, I was disappointed over the cheap feel of the knobs themselves. They didn't feel solid, and if you use one finger on the side of the control as I did on my other unit while performing, the whole knob moves slightly to the side, and you're forced to use two fingers to turn the knob. The mounting of each knob is weak and they move instead of being solidly mounted in the mixer. Is this a big deal? Well, my other cheaper unit had a nice solid wood casing giving you a little confidence that the internals are well protected, something a gigging musician counts on. My other cheaper unit also had a nice solid feel to the knobs, giving you a feeling of a well built, quality unit that would last. I expected higher quality on a Yamaha unit that cost 3 times more than the unit it was replacing. So far, this mixer has been working alright, but time will definitely tell if my concerns are well founded or not. This unit will be used a lot and hauled a lot. Every time I set up and tear down, I feel like I have to handle the mixer like it's made of glass. I'm always careful with my equipment and treat everything with care, but the Yamaha just doesn't lend that feeling of a quality solid well-built component. I hope I won't regret this purchase in the long run.

Yamaha Amping Up Again...
Very Nice AMP/MIXer..Interesting surprise, I received an e-mail from Yamaha, that this model of Mixer has been discontinued, and asked if the EMX5 model, which is the upgrade would be OK for a replacement. I received the EMX5 in a short time, which is a little nicer, has more power, and seems to work great for my DJ needs...PLUS the $$ was the same to me...nothing but A+ all the way around. Thank-You, Yamaha for the great service / advice and help. Really a quality product.

Yamaha EMX512SC
Yamaha did it again. This is an awesome powered mixer. Plenty of power, very clean sound, excellent effects and features. I am extremely happy with it. I had a 6 channel 200w x 2 Yamaha EMX mixer that I used hard for 12 years for over 200 shows a year, many on decks near the ocean in salt air and it never failed and is still working. It's now my backup system. I expect to get the same dependability from this new EMX512SC 8 channel 500w x 2 mixer. I am Yamaha all the way from my mixer to my speakers and my 12 string Compass series and APX guitars. Yamaha rocks!
