Q: will this adaptor work with an older kenwood kdc-x579?

If radio has a 9 pin input terminal cable will fit. I used mine to attach an iPod but my radio (Kenwood KDC-MP228) doesn't recognize this "external optional accessory".

Q: Which of the 13 pins are connected to the tip-ring-sleeve?

Best way is to use a volt ohm meter, dvm or a continuity tester and check one pin at a time. The tip is positive.
