Black Cats Tarot Deck (Black Cats Tarot, 1)

I ordered the Black Cats Tarot from Amazon on 6/26/13, got it two days later. Standard Tarot deck packaging, plastic wrapped cardboard flip top box, cards inside also plastic wrapped, standard LWB. Box is 2 11/16" by 4 13/16", cards measure 2 5/8" by 4 3/4". Deck has standard tarot's 78 cards with a couple extra cards, a front title card of a cool cat floating Buddha style over a sunflower (a different version of the Magician) and the Tarot Illuminati's High Priestess on the back of that same card. The last or 80th card advertises three other decks by Lo Scarabeo. Backs of cards are reversible, showing mirror reflections of a black cat's head wearing a tiara, with dark blue and grey swirly designs around the heads. (some of which are 3 lobed and look vaguely like a Micky Mouse silhouette, but maybe that's just my imagination). Cards follow the Rider Waite style, with the four suites being Chalices, Pentacles, Wands, and Swords. There is a spread using six cards, called "the cat's tail" in the LWB. The LWB instructions are in English thru page 12, Italian, Spanish, French, German, and Portuguese, but the cards are merely numbered, the Major Arcana in Roman numerals, and the suite cards numbered 1-10, then has symbols for Page being a helmet, Knight, (horses head), Queen (crown) and King (orb with three lobed cross). Minor Arcana has numbers or court symbols at the top, with suite symbols (cup, wand, sword, or coins) at the bottom. Majors have the Roman numerals at both top and bottom, all in a thin black border that has grey flowery things in the corners. These cards are cute, and follow loosely the standard Rider Waite meanings or images with cats, of course. I kindof hoped the Queen of Wands would have had a tiny scruffy humanoid figure at the foot of her throne, but no, she's on her knees in a garden feeding little birdies. Strength is VIII, Justice is XI, and all of the Majors have standard Rider-Waite labels. Cards are very nice, slippery and thin without being plastic-y, easy to shuffle. Some cards I think worth mentioning or contrasting:The Fool, a cute little white kitty, who goes thru his journey as a black kitty, then at The World, sheds his black kitty suit and turns back into a white kitty. The Heirophant, representing Spiritual Authority, is sitting on a tree stump handing out cheese to mice, holding the Golden Key of Knowledge. The Five of Chalices, a black kitty sitting in the snow, with her head in hands-interesting because in the Rider Waite Smith cards, the only card depicting snow is the 5 of Pentacles. The 5 of Pentacles in the Black Cats depicts a couple kittys in a cave sharing the last of a bony fish, then in the 6 of Pentacles, these two are being helped out of the cave by another cat with gold jewels on. The 9 of Pentacles has a hunk of cheese on a stump being nibbled on by a white rat, with kitties hiding in the bushes, watching...waiting to ambush?All in all, I am pretty happy with these cards, but I think I will probably keep them as collector cards and use my ole standby RWS cards for readings.Hope this helps you make a choice! I was initially wary of buying the Black Cats Tarot Deck due to some negative online reviews. Based on the pictures I had seen, it did seem kind of creepy. However, being both a black cat owner and a tarot deck enthusiast, I decided to go ahead and order the deck anyway last week along with the black cat drawstring bag that pairs well with it. Upon a first glance, I was disappointed. The cards seemed to have little to no regard for the traditional meanings of the cards. However, I gave it a week and returned to the deck last night for another look. Wow! I was bowled over this time. I need strong visuals in my decks, and this certainly delivers. Each card tells a story, and some are quite striking and conjure up feelings in me that are unmatched in other decks like the Rider-Waite deck. Each picture is carefully thought-out and vibrantly drawn. It is a treat to watch the story arc of the black cats as they navigate the world. Some cards are upbeat, some are not, but all are a treasure to witness. This will definitely get some serious use in my collection!

This is my first deck review and I have to say if you love Black Cats this is a great deck for you. If you're a seasoned reader it will be easy to pick up and read. For the beginner, I wouldn't recommend it unless you are reading it intuitively or want to constantly refer to the book. The cardstock is nice, not too bulky and not too light. It's easy to shuffle and no problem with sticking as I have had with some decks in the past. To me it is a really fun deck.I hope this is helpful.

The deck includes a fun little guide showing basic interpretations of each card, so you don't have to spend money on a big book if you just want to use the deck as a conversation piece or parlor trick. The pocket-guide also describes a basic tarot spread, so you can impress your friends. The cards are standard tarot size, so they're difficult to shuffle, but that's practically de rigueur for tarot decks. The pictures are really cute and imaginative, but match the spirit of the cards themselves (so eight of swords shows a fearful cat hiding behind eight swords, for instance), so I enjoyed that.Almost had to take a star off for the deck not summoning Satan, but I got a call from his office to let me know he's already been summoned and works lobbying in Washington D.C.Great value for money!

Very smooth to handle, I love the touch. I found advanced level, not for beginners. For me, I was looking for something advanced, so it’s perfect and pretty happy!
