I was a little too old for Pokémon when it first came out, so I've actually never played one before. Now that my son is just old enough to play games, though, I figured it might be a good way to get him into understanding strategy and give him an incentive to read more words. To this end, yes, Pokémon Sword and Shield have been a huge success.The games are colorful and engaging for a kid, and pleasant enough to make playing and helping out fun for Dad, too. They're not technical masterpieces, and the story is very childish for an adult, but the gameplay with catching Pokémon and building teams is fun. The difficulty level is too easy for me, but it's just right for a kid. At age 5 my son does need help with it, though I appreciate that he's able to go off and do plenty of things without me constantly intervening, since you can always go back and heal your Pokémon for free and the death penalty isn't that harsh.We're each playing a different version, and we are making different teams and seeing all the differences each of us faces. In this way, the game has me feeling a bit ripped off. The two games are barely different enough to warrant selling the two versions in the first place. Even the things that are supposed to be different aren't really. For example, in the 4th gym challenge you face a different leader in each version. But the challenge itself is 100% identical. You just fight a different set of Pokémon. We can't even notice whichever Pokémon are supposed to be unique to each version without looking it up, as 99% of the ones you encounter in the normal course of play are the same. I knew going into it that it wouldn't be the greatest value, but it's actually even worse than I thought. I suppose this is what Nintendo does instead of microtransactions. Compare this to Luigi's Mansion 3 where my son and I could both have a save file on the same account with one copy of the game. In this game you either need two games or two accounts.Still, I'll give the game 5 stars from the perspective of how my son feels about it and how it's made him want to learn to understand complex game menus and things like that. I just have to recommend for gamers on a budget to only get one or the other version.

A lifelong fan here and this is the BEST pokemon game among series.I played the game for 17 hours straight and cannot stop; I haven't finished the game because there are so many playable elements that I fall in love with.Comparing to old pokemon games:1) I can see my friends walking around in the wild area and I camp with them. We can see each other's pokemon, so I started to spend more time catching rare pokemon so that I can show off.2) I needed more money to buy pretty clothes, do makeup and change hairstyles so that I can amaze my friends; I start to battle NPCs to make money. To win the battle faster and make money faster, I needed to build a better pokemon team and build a better move combination.3) I fight Dynamax monster with friends in the wild areas. To show off my pokemon skills, I spend more time to figure out the best move combinations for new pokemon at each stage of the game. Yes, I like showing off ;) and my friends too.4) I am more addicted to berries because I want to make different curries.5) Beating the gym is not just walking around and battling with annoying NPCs. There are more interactive puzzles to solve and "I NEED THEIR MONEY TO BUY MORE CLOTHES!". Gym battles are excited, there are audiences cheering for you.6) A better soundtrack, it makes gameplay much more immersive and excited.7) Great and beautiful old pokemon game core is kept: Collect, trade and battle. And new features serve for these game core well.8) You can see pokemon walk around. Unlike old pokemon games, now I can avoid unnecessary battles. Most importantly, pokemons are so cute when they wander around!9) The most amazing thing for pokemon games since the old series; I call it "pokemon culture": it brings your friends together and you guys will discuss your discoveries like scientists.However, there are disadvantages:1) I played a physical copy and turned off the auto-save feature as others suggest. The sd card issue did not happen to me. If the sd card issue is related to the game, this is BAAAD.2) In the wild zone, other players are lagging(not sync). It's 2019, really, this should not be an issue.3) Hmmm... What happened to Gorythmic???4) Even though my fav pokemon is not gone, I feel sorry for those whose fav got cut.5) Where is pokemon bank? :(I am glad that gamefreak made changes to improve the gameplay. Good work!
