Neither one thing nor the other
Bought it for inspiration to get back on the fitness wagon and it was to a point, particularly the accounts of the swim. The longer the book went on the more annoying it became. If it was more about the swim than the science, which I guess was not exactly groundbreaking as most of the technical stuff was referenced from other more high brow sources, then it would have been fine. The determination and grit of the author was uber impressive and some of the accounts of his stages heroic. After finishing the book I went to watch some of his accounts of the swim on you tube and there my suspicions about the author's ego shone through. Pure self promotion. The dramatic account of the swim in the book seemed less impressive when you see his bulletins on the screen. Plus the foreword was from his mate and fellow self promoter Ant Middleton, another modern day British hero making the most of celebrity. At least this book was not as bad as the one by his mate. Still he made it happen and you can't knock the guy for an immense effort. Back of the shelf before going to the charity shop along with his mate's book.

Seriously inspirational and motivating!
As with โThe Worldโs Fittest Bookโ, Ross has populated The Art of Resilience with fascinating real life stories, showcasing his constant goal to push himself and achieve what very few believe is possible (as well as to eat huge amounts of cheesecake). This book is a brilliant story packed full of advice on how to build mental and physical resilience and battle the odds, which can be applied to all forms of life.Ross is incredibly inspirational, not just through his athletic accomplishments, but also his modest and humble nature. If you are about to attempt a 5k quarantine PB, do so following reading a few chapters of this for serious motivation! He is also a Loughborough legend and I feel honoured to have followed his journey from when he was giving talks on his old nutrition business, to meeting him on his UK tour and now watching him deserve all his success. As a recent graduate, there is no better role model. A phenomenal book which will keep you amazed, intrigued and definitely in awe throughout!

Read this to help your mental health.
Fantastic so far, really inspiring.Iโm a paramedic by trade and part of this involves dealing with those suffering from mental health problems. I honestly believe that reading and then living the lessons from this book and others like it would help more people than the current trend of throwing medication at depression and anxiety. We are a nation of sofa dwellers and hopefully this will encourage people to get up, get outside and take a more philosophical approach to exercise and health.Great work Ross. I winced at the duct tape dressings though!

More than just resilience, a great adventure story!
I obviously don't know him in real life- but from podcasts etc you really can picture Ross talking as you read the book and feel his almost relentless enthusiasm coming through.I feel the title does the book a dis-service as it's more than a book on resilience, it combines a lit of great thoughts and ideas about resilience along with documenting his journey as he swam around Britain. As a big fan of stoicism and being resilient, I'm probably predisposed to like this as I already agree with the concepts, but can't recommend it highly enough as an intro to this stuff and a great adventure story to boot. If you want to further your research there are very extensive references to help you.For me three key points I'd love everyone to get are;1. Be active, in both mind and body. We've known since Greek times that you need to be both physically and mentally fit to be the best human you can be.2. If you have kids teach them 1. Be active with them - Ross mentions this a lot, but his long term base helped achieve the swim. You don't have to want your kids to swim around a country to want to set them up to be the best weapon they can be. Build fit, healthy and resilient children - they will thank you for their whole adult lives.3. If you have friends and family, support them in their endeavours and passions, even if you don't understand them!Read, enjoy and be resilient!

A book that you MUST read and recommend to your endurance athletes
The media could not be loaded. ย Okay... let me start by saying that I followed his journey across the Great Britain on youtube when it came out and then heard his podcasts from Joe rogan and now that i am reading this masterpiece of a book ๐ I am super impressed of how he took all the negative information he received from everyone and decided to put that on one side and kept focusing his eyes on the goal even after swimming in his on sickness incident in the water, huuge respect and admiration to you Mr Ross Edgley!I am 4 chapters in and I am absolutely loving this book! Thank you for sharing your experience with the world ๐๐ฝ
