RedingtonVICE Fly Fishing Rod with Tube, Freshwater, Moderate Action Rod

Poor fit/finish and components, decent caster
The fit and finish just aren’t up to par. Some might ask what I expect for a sub $200 rod, and the answer is I expect more.I bought a redington classic trout which is a less expensive rod and the fit and finish were great, no obvious flaws, but it’s just too slow casting for what I wanted to use it for. The Vice actually throws weight better (faster) but the fit and finish in the components are just not tight at all. I even had a replacement sent thinking it was a fluke and the replacement was just as bad. I would have returned it but I had a trip I needed to have it for so I ate the cost and kept it. It fished okay thankfully. It’s the third item I’ve bought from redington this summer (classic trout, Vice and rise reel) but after trying to contact redington twice about the Vice with no reply I will not be buying redington gear anymore. It’s not like I contacted them about all three items. I definitely have suggestions for how they could improve the rise such as smoothing the sharp edges so it doesn’t fray leader, but the rise and CT had no actual manufacturing flaws, unlike the Vice so I accepted I got what I paid for. However redington should make this right with the Vice and Their customer service never even got back to me. My money will be spent on other brands going forward.

Awesome rod. Amazing price.
I feel so bad that I had to leave this review. I bought this rod from the amazon warehouse for 115.00 bucks (regularly 199.00). Either price is a steal, I just stole less. I was totally skeptical - how could a hundred dollar rod compare to others I own that cost almost ten times that? I figured I’d cast it and stick it in the closet as a backup to something else more expensive. Holy crap can this rod throw a big ... fly and a full sink line. And it fished superbly. Easy distance, soft enough tip for good presentations. It’s not a super light rod, and the reel seat and guides /thread finishes are barely above Walmart rod quality, but geez I paid just over a hundred bucks for it. It’s a wild green color and the graphics on it look like a can of Monster Energy, and the dots to line up the sections are hard to see but now I’m picking nits. It’s a hell of a rod for the money. Yeah it’s probably made in China blah blah blah. Despite all that however, it’s now my go-to streamer rod and I’ll carry it rigged and ready as much as I can. Just don’t turn me in for doing it.

Nice rod, but not for beginners
If I had paid better attention during my shopping I would have learned that this rod, being a fast action rod, is not ideal for beginners because its stiffness makes it difficult to feel the backcast loading--which makes it difficult to master the timing without watching the entire backcast which kills my aim. A fast action rod is also not great/designed for short casts either, and since my goal is small stream trout fishing I'm exchanging mine for the Redington Classic Trout for its medium action. 4 star rating given because the rod didn't fail me in any way, but rather I failed to put the necessary time and thought into my rod shopping. Redington says it's "...designed to be accessible to all anglers" and in the end I don't disagree with that, I simply misunderstood that to mean it would make a good starter rod. The case is nice, and the build quality of the rod seems excellent. Unfortunately as a total newb I struggled with tailing loops which put repeated "wind knots" into my tippet when I used this rod. That's on me though, and I'm only writing this to maybe save someone the hassle. I also own the Redington Crosswater rod and I'm much better at throwing tight loops with it. If you're looking for your first fly rod and want to keep the cost low, I can definitely vouch for the quality, capability, and relative user-friendliness of that rod.

Fast Action, deadly accurate
Fast Action! Deadly accurate 20-50ft. I would highly recommend going up 1 line size on this rod.......if you’re looking for a 5 wt, buy a 4 wt and put a 5 line on it. That’s what I did and couldn’t be happier. I tried the rod w a 4 wt line and you couldn’t even feel it load. You could also buy Rio Grande line for it but that’s a 1 line size heavier fly line anyway. Same thing. Downside is the guides and ferrules look crappy but the rod is $199 so you get what you pay for. If you’re looking for a fast Sage rod but don’t have the $, get the vice

HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Absolutely LOVE this rod. It casts just as good as my $600+ dollar Sage and Loomis rods but cost me $170 instead! Very light, very fast. I picked up the 9wt and can chuck heavy striper flies into the wind with no issues at all. The green color could be better, Im not a fan, but I dont buy gear for its looks, I buy for the performance. And this rod performs above and beyond expectations. I picked it up as a backup/extra but found I like it so much I use it as a second set up with a sinking line and carry it next to my GLX with a floating line. Fantastic rod at an unbeatable price.

This new Vice is unbelievable.
You will not believe the action of this rod. I took it out in the yard to see how it cast (allow me to say that I'm only an average caster) and within a few minutes I was casting 78 feet and placing a fly within the area I was aiming for. Great rod. I've purchased a number of rods in my time and Redington has always been one of my go to tools. Yes I own some Scott's, St Croix's, Fenwick's and some bamboo's but for a good moderate priced rod Redington is very hard to beat and this new Vice is unbelievable.

Redington 👌👌
I can not believe this rod for this price. It's absolutely insane. I have the 9ft 4wt and I couldn't be happier. Especially for under $200! If you want a rod that's better than a beginner rod and not spend a boat load. This is for you. It's done me well. I fish small mountain streams in North GA and East Tennessee and this one is great! Nice dry fly presentation. This rod is deadly accurate and great action for the price. I've got the Redington crosswater 9ft 5wt, classic trout 8.6 4wt, and now the Vice 9ft 4wt. I really like using the Classic trout in the small streams, but honestly having the 9ft allows me to keep my line over obstacles while drifting a little better. Redington makes great products at a fair price and the customer service is great. I recommend Redington to everyone. Sure this rod isn't hand made and doesn't have all the bells and whistles it's only $200, but the product you get with this rod is absolutely worth it!
