Not sure what button on front does- but the sound is amazing!!!
So so so much better then the competitors. I bought the “other” one first, and it wasn’t bad...it made sound. However after a bit, I began to hate it. I could hear the loop over and over- it probably had a 5 second recording and then it would start over. Had way to many crackles and pops to be realistic.THIS product is so much better. I actually cannot hear the loop. Sounds very clear. Not tinny at all. I Like the ability to raise or lower the sound at my leisure. Doesn’t have pre-set volumes, which is nice.I would 100% buy this item again. Will recommend. Thank you for the great product!!!

Loop way to short.
The sounds were OK but the loop was only about 7 seconds long and there was a distinctive crackle which was obvious as it repeated.

Cracking wood and fluttering fire sound ok but not full range
The bad: Either the frequency response of the recorded sound is not full spectrum or the speaker cannot reproduce full frequency sound because the sound lacks the lower frequencies of the fire fluttering and sounds "tinny" as others describe. The seller in answering one of the questions in his description states that the recorded sound is 5 minutes long is absolutely false. The sound loop is only 9-10 seconds and if this answer determined wether or not you purchased this item like I did, we need to tell the truth. There is no difference with the competition in sound quality. The good: This item has a slot in the back for a screw mount which makes it rather convenient to hang inside of an electric stove, mantle or fireplace. This item also has a continuously variable volume control which gives you much more control over the sound output than the competition. This item also takes three double "a" batteries which should theoretically last a rather long time in casual use before needing to be changed. Despite its flaws this item was my best compromise for an item of its type. A stand alone MP3 player and speaker with a fire recording might have been more realistic but for convenience and size it does the job. Perhaps at a later date after the warranty has ended I will hardwire this item with an ac/dc transformer into my electric stove so it can be turned on by remote control.

Crackler box really helps gas logs
The media could not be loaded. Does surprisingly well for such a small, inexpensive item. Yes, agree with the first poster, it would sound better if the speaker was larger, but of course then it would be bigger and cost more. But the way around that is ideally to put it in a small metal box. That seems to round out the sound best. I did not have a small enough one and so just put the crackler face down and covered it over. We have a bit of a whistle from the wrong type of corregated piping, but you can get the basic idea from the video.

Only takes a minute before you recognize the repetive pattern
I bought this to add some realism to my gas logs. It's only fair to middlin'. I'm assuming it is a recording of a a Real Fire. There's too much background noise. The recording was too short. It only takes a short time before you start sensing the repetition of the same cracklings you just heard. It doesn't have a heat sensor to turn it on. You have to take it out of the fireplace an flip the switch. I will add a klix-on temperature switch if I don't just toss it first.

Not perfect, but beats the other options.
I'm changing my review from 3 to 4 stars. Initially, I was unimpressed with this device, so I ordered another from a different manufacturer, and by comparison, this one is much better. I've also had time to try it a different levels of sound, and while it still sounds too speaker-ish when turned up, it's pretty convincing at a low level of sound and when placed next to the fire affect of the heater. I'm pretty happy with it, and do recommend it over the gadget produced by the other manufacturer. It's okay, though I feel like it's way overpriced as it's a very simple and plastic gadget. The sound is a little off, in my opinion, too high pitch. Sounds a little too ,much like speaker static. It's better when turned down very low. I wanted this for an electric heater made to look like a cast iron stove, with a faux fire inside. With the sound turned down low and the gadget placed inside the stove-heater, behind the faux flames, it's passable as a crackling fire. If I burn wood smoke smelling incense, while playing this, and running the flame effect and heat on my electric-stove heater, it's a fairly convincing system if not scrutinized. I also ordered one of these sound systems from another manufacturer. It hasn't arrived yet, but I'm curious to see how the sound quality compares with this one. I'm hoping better. This one is just good enough that I'm not returning it, but I don't recommend it wither, and suggest buyers check out other options before settling on this.

Sounds real!
This truly sounds like a real fireplace. We don't have one so turn on the electric fireplace in the family room or run a fireplace video on the TV in the living room and run the Fire Crackler and you can be fooled into thinking it is a real fire, at least with the electric fireplace. It worked well last Christmas.
