This receiver is amazing! Both in terms of functionality and sound quality
I bought this unit for a theater room in my basement, along with Silver Ticket in-wall speakers and (2) Polk Audio Powered 12" subs for a 7.2 surround sound system. This receiver is amazing! Both in terms of functionality and sound quality. I had no problems hooking up all of my equipment, the instruction manual is easy to read and follow, and everyone who comes in to watch a movie is blown away by how amazing the whole setup is.Setting up the unit with the microphone was the only annoying factor, but this is more because I am impatient. You place the microphone, per the instructions, where you will be sitting (also several more times around that spot) while the unit sends an audio blip through each speaker so it can gauge distances and reverb and echo and such, and it automatically adjusts itself to give you a sweet spot in that zone where you sit and watch movies. This works really well, and you can definitely tell when sitting in your spot vs sitting across the room or even not that far from the spot that there is a noticeable difference in immersion. It isn't a bad difference, just noticeable. The only downside for me so far is trying to display 4K on my 55" UHD 4K TV from my computer via the reciever. I can't get it to display over 2K resolution. I haven't yet figured out if this is a problem with going over HDMI (my video card supports 4K over HDMI, and I am using a 4K HDMI cable to and from the reciever) or if the TV itself requires a specific set of parameters to be set on my PC to override everything else and force 4K. I have to do more research. For the price and features, you really can't beat a Denon. I'm very happy with this purchase, and you will be too.

Great Receiver, Lacking Documentation
Pleased all around. First off, bought as refurbished. Came in a boxes that were clearly not retail, but packed expertly, Device itself looks as though it just left the factory. All accessories were also in perfect condtion.Upgraded from a 6 year old Yamaha 5.1 receiver, and I am stunned at the advancement in connectivity since then. The sound itself isn't an order of magnitudes better, but is better. Setting up the receiver and calibrating was simple. Looks flawless. Connection back panel is well organized and not as daunting as receivers past. I guess HDMI ports taking the place of RCA jacks will do that. This receiver really shows the difference (compared to my old Yamaha) in quality of recordings. The dynamic range seems to be much better than the older Yamaha and higher quality recordings sound much better than the yamaha. Feed your machine with high quality and/or lossless recordings, and you will get a better idea on how much better this unit is than receivers of yore. Poorly produced or low bit rate music sounds poor regardless of the unit you use. I bought this for the connectivity options, not the sound quality improvements as I didn't think there would be ANY. I was wrong. The one thing that is specifically annoying, is the lack of instructions on how to connect your device to other devices, spefically the lack of assistance available even online on how the Spotify Connect option works, as they are NOT listed in the on screen menus if you have this hooked up to a monitor. I spent several hours online; researching how to connect Spotify on my pc to the Denon, forwarding ports on my router, examining settings, eg. Very frustrating.I am still not sure how i DID get it working. Being exasperated, I decided to try to connect Spotify on my phone to the receiver, and it worked immediately, so, the issue wasn't my router. Or was it because my phone was connecting via bluetooth? I am still not sure. Right after successfully connecting my phone to the receiver, Spotify on my PC finally gave me the option to "Connect to Denon".Long story short, there is no button, or option within the receiver itself for Spotify Connect, it simply accepts a spotify programs transmissions if you send it the receivers way. The "button" for spotify connect is on the device you are playing from, and is NOT a program within the receiver. Just set the input on the Denon to online music, then run spotify on your OTHER device, and cross your fingers you get the option on the OTHER device to connect to denon wirelessly. Denon, If you are going to tout this as a selling point, then add some clarification for this. All in all though, if you are familiar installing receivers into your system, you should have no install issues. I've never run a calibration program before, and found it just too easy.I do think this is an excellent receiver, but find Denons documentation lacking, both out of the box and online. That's why it gets docked one star. For a good review on this unit, search: Wirecutter The best receiver 2015Recommended.

Initial setup lacked depth in range
Bought this coming off a dead and defunct Onkyo TX NR515. The sound of the AVR S710W is good, but is lacking in low register.I bi-amped the speakers using the rear surround posts and perhaps I have the upper and lower posts on the JBL Northridge E series bookshelf speakers reversed on the receiver, but the sound is very flat and the dynamic volume at any setting is huge compared to the feature being turned off.The settings are harder for me to manipulate using the OSD and lacks a degree of explanation during setup, however the initial setup process was a bit easier with OSD of wire connections. I'm not certain this unit is designed for a bi-amp (not bi-wire) configuration as I don't see a wiring diagram for it as I do on more expensive models. The S710w is supposed to rival the TX NR545 / 646.I still have some fiddling to do to try and get the sound to match the Onkyo quality I was used to, but the refurbished unit worked out of the box and I had zero problems with a wifi firmware update. The HDMI control works well with no CEC handshake issues between a Samsung 4k TV and my PlayStation 4. I also have no issue connecting my Lenovo Y700 via HDMI in the front aux port and using the TV as a second screen. If I can figure out how to get my bass tones back, I'll update the review with how and increase stars but right now I do have concern that the low end output w/o subs are very weak.

Great Receiver
This receiver is great. I am not a sound guy so I can't speak professional to how good the sound is, but the features on this receiver is what I love the best. Among normal music sources, I can also bluetooth to the receiver and it has internet radio. I am able to connect to the radio station from my home town which is awesome. The sound to me is great. I have this in a back room, so being able to control it from my tablet makes life great and saved me from having to buy a remote relay to connect to it. I went with the refurbished because I have had great success with buying refurb stuff from Amazon to save some money. Now I would buy this system new if I had too.
