Good hardware, sorry software
The hardware on this printer is excellent. It shares the same toner cartrigde as the 1320. However, the software sucks, sucks, sucks. If you plan on using this with one or two computers in a single room, you should be fine. If you plan on using this in a business environment, you will be stymied.THIS IS A CONSUMER PRINTER!!!The HP auto updater can't work with a proxy server.Their is no fax confirmation for network users. The printer can only be managed via the USB interface.Fax logs can only be accessed through the USB interface.Tech support for this printer is clearly consumer, not business, oriented. The printer is very fast, very quite, nicely built, integrated handles, solid feeling. The software is sucks. If you are using with one or two computers in the same room, you should be very happy.

Awesome machine, really bad scanning software
I have used every feature of this printer with absolute delight except for the scanning software. The printer came with a defective cartridge which HP was very quick to overnight a replacement for it and even followup if it fixed my problem. Great. Faxing from machine - awesome. Faxing from PC - Outstanding. Printing - Very crisp pages with everything I had expected from 1200 dpi.Now why such a great machine such as this one ships out with crappy scanning software is beyond me. I guess one can purchase different scanning software for it, but it was supposed to be part of the package. That's why I'm giving it a 4 stars instead of 5. I like it so much that I only dinged it by one star because of the software. I wanted to go towards a paperless office by scanning everything and storing it in digital format, but having second thoughts after I had to deal with the Readiris software that comes with it.If you don't care about scanning documents much, then by all means, do buy this machine. If scanning is a big part of the purchase, then I don't know if I would recommend it.

Worst POS in the history of POS
Worst POS in the history of POS. I've tried loading the drivers under 3 different OSs. It will print one page and then error out. I'd throw it away but the refuse collection agency says it contains hazardous waste. When it does manage to print one page the chemical smell after makes me have to abandon my office for an hour. My recommendation, if your boss gives this to you resign your job and sue him for trying to kill you.

Good basic multifunction, but Brother beats it for features!!
Having owned an HP 3330 multifunction (from 2002) I thought this new 2006 model can only be better. Well, it is in some ways....I guess. The 3390 adds duplex printing and has a built-in JetDirect for network based printing and sharing, but other than that it doesn't seem to be any different than the recently discontinued 3380. And for that matter its not a whole lot different than the 4 year old 3330. Fairly sad product innovation on HP's part considering that the competition is offering some credible new features in this class of product.Comparing the new Brother 8860DN and the HP 3390 side by side proves the Brother is superior in most things. Since this is an HP 3390 review, I'll refer you to my Brother 8860 review for more details. Its not all doom and gloom with the 3390, I just feel for the $700 price they are asking, HP could have added a bit more innovation.Things missing from the HP that I wish were included:1) duplex scanning from document feeder2) faster scanning (its S-L-O-W)3) a legal size scan glass (realtors still use legal paper)4) fax forward to emailOther annoyances:The 3390 has only been out for a few weeks, however they've already revisioned the software from V1.0 to V1.1 and now V2.0. HP has also released two firmware updates in that tims as well. Sounds good, assuming all problems are resolved, however they are not! In the couple days I used this printer, I found the following issues:1) the TWAIN interface for the scanner will often give warning messages about the document feeder and these warnings don't make sense. Bypassing them resolves the problem. Plus the TWAIN interface counts the pages backwards (ex: 6 of 2 instead of 2 of 6).2) I have experienced issues where printing a document from Word will cause all text to be truncated on the paper.3) TWAIN interface will not work with the Windows XP built-in fax program.4) If you turn off your 3390 the HP toolbox program will sometimes hang. So, all in all its a decent machine. For anyone looking for a no nonsense multifunction this will do the job. For $200 less you can also get the Brother 8860 that will do everything the same plus more.

1/2 price rebate did it.
Despite the generally average reviews, I went ahead and purchased the Laser Jet 3390 printer at this time because of the generous HP rebate. If it didn't work I knew that I could obtain satisfaction from Amazon during the first 30 days. I've had it up and running now for two weeks and it performs flawlessly under a system running Windows XP Media Center (really Windows XP Professional).I had no installation issues other than some confusion with the Twain driver which I resolved without calling India or wherever their help desk is these days. For $350 after the rebate, it's in my opinion a deal worth considering.

Beware if you have Vista 64Bit
Had this printer for about 1 year. Worked great with XP home. I just upgraded my computer and it came with Vista Home Premium 64Bit. I can print, but not get all the scanner functions to work. Especially my bank deposits which I do by scanning them to the bank. I order the full installation CD but it doesn't seem to work. I can't even get the software to install. Try getting help from HP support and they want to charge you $25 for online chat, for a problem that they cannot resolve. I'm not paying another $25 when I paid $23 for the CD that was supposed to work.If you are buying a new printer be double sure it works with windows vista-64

Robust printer and scanner
I had HP Laserjet 1320 that died and this unit uses the same cartridges. Set up was great, but watch out for the scanner input feed tray - it pops out for no reason and is a little tricky to get back into place. The quality is great, and I love all the capabilities to do multiple pages per page and also duplex both sides.
