can I drink from the mug--or do I have to pour into a cup?

You can drink directly from the mug, but it is easier to pour it into a cup if the contents are extremely hot.

I got this mug. Unlike the photo on Amazon, this does not have a black plastic ring on which a user's lips are. Does yours not have this part as well?

I checked out their website, and it looks like other models do have a plastic ring. Just not the loose leaf tea version here.

Is this dishwasher safe?

It is NOT dishwasher safe. The inside coating is non-stick. So it should be easy to wipe with a warm sponge. Putting it in the dishwater will compromise the beautiful exterior finish of your thermos. The manual in provided with the thermos clearly states it is not dishwasher safe.

Do you leave the tea leaves and the tea basket in the main body while drinking? Won't the tea leaves fall out?

No, the tea leaves do NOT go into the basket. You put the tea leaves in the canister and them put the basket in after. When drinking the tea, the basket serves to seperate the tea leaves and the tea so you don't get leaves in your mouth.
