Q: do these bleed in the wash?

I have not washed the charms, but have washed quilts made with Fossil Fern material and have never had any experience with bleeding.

Q: Are fossil fern fabrics true batiks? Are they pretty much the same color on the back and front?

No, Fossil Fern fabrics are not batiks and they are not the same color front and back. You can see the markings on the back, but the color is not as intense and it is very clear which is front and which is back. The mottling of the colors is lovely and I would recommend the fabrics, but not if you are looking for batiks.

It isn't a batik. The ferns remind me more of when I was a child and you would put a leaf down and then spatter paint with a brush to get the shape. I like it a lot and think it would look nice with batik fabric because of the variations in the dye. It is lovely.

I'm a quilter, and all Benartex charm packs were exactly as advertised.
