review for a htpc user(dont buy)
Attempted to use on windows 10 since I have a home theater pc. The selecter(arrow) keys, big OK button work as they should. The volume buttons turn the windows system volume up and down. It can't be programmed to turn your TV volume up and down, more on IR issues later down. The page up and down buttons scroll the page, but your selector up and down buttons do that as well anyways so wasted space. There's a left click button front and center for some reason, why its not right click is anyones guess because the ok button in the middle does the same exact thing when your mouse is being used. The back button, what looks like it should be a back button is actually your right mouse click, and it's in a spot I have to constantly look down at to make sure I'm pressing it. It looks like it should of been the escape button to go back, and actually on the keyboard side the escape button has the same exact label. The media controls work as they should, although rewind just starts whatever your watching over completely instead of just rewinding or backtracking a set amount of seconds each press. now I come to the four bottom buttons on this thing, which are the most worthless. Out of the box the email button opens your default email app. Would of been nice if it was just notifications or messages, why the hell anyone would want to use their email on their tv is anyones guess. The button next to that is supposed to be the menu or right click button. And it would of been great place for a context menu it options button for whatever your doing but the button does absolutely nothing, does nothing in kodi, and does nothing in windows. Windows doesn't even recognize your pushing anything when you do press it so more wasted space. The search button surprisingly actually opens up Cortana in windows, which would be nifty if the enter button, or any button for that matter other than the keyboard would actually search or acknowledge what you typed out so Cortana can actually search for it. But again it does nothing. And finally the home button, another really great place for it but unfortunately in windows it opens up the Edge browser, which is great for searching but in reality it really should of been something you press to go right back to your windows home screen. And it doesn't. I'm going to now talk about IR issues. Because this thing has 5 dedicated, and when I mean dedicated I mean its all these buttons can do, 5 dedicated buttons for controlling ONLY 1 IR device and only 5 buttons to it with. So if you have an IR remote you can only program 5 buttons from that remote for this thing to use. Now on this remote there's only one dedicated power button and it's it the ir part on top so I can't tell my pc to shut off with it. It's the same thing with all the ir buttons they are dedicated to IR and only IR. now these gripes are out of the box, I searched all over for a button mapping program or something I can use to change what these buttons do so I can get some actual functionality that makes sense for a friggen TV remote. Go to my windows home screen, Mute windows and not just my tv, change my audio output from speakers to tv. I couldn't find a damn thing. Something like these really should of come with software to change buttons and that is my biggest gripe. When emailing support they refracted the question like a politician and referred me to their IR programming guide when I was holding the damn thing in my hands in the first place. The biggest nail in the coffin though was i haven't had it for a day yet and the gyro air mouse started drifting to the left forcefully and the guide to correct drift was to flip it to keyboard on the table ,press the fn key and release the left mouse button, uuuhh, the left mouse button is on the other side of the remote so how the heck am I supposed to keep it on level surface and press two buttons on either side of the thing? And when was I supposed to press the mouse button exactly? I tried every combination i could to reset the gyro so I can actually keep using it and maybe run across someone someday that has figured it out and NOTHING worked. Absolutely nothing. Not completely uninstalling drivers or restarting my system.I figured for 50 bucks at best buy id get something that was quite premium that I could do whatever I wanted with and this thing is a pile of crap that's going right back where I bought it from right now.
