Depends on the size of the 5 year old. I think it would fit, but you would have to pull past the actual ties for it to stay on.

I'm a size 16/18 as well, it will fit, but I would recommend tying it to the side since even though the fabric fits, the silver jingly things won't come all the way to the front. I would recommend the next size up if you want it to cover more of your actual body with the jingly things, but you will have more of the fabric hanging down in the front.
