Take your time, read the directions and go through the setup logically.
Read the directions CAREFULLY. There are two seemingly identical units only one says TRANSMITTER, and one says RECEIVER. The EDGE stamped with the IR symbol (ON THE RECEIVER UNIT) should face the cable box/receiver/device you're trying to control. Make sure the IR symbol on the TRANSMITTER is facing in a direction where you'll be aiming the remote. When you initially set it up, plug in the Receiver Unit (aim it correctly) and just go to a room adjacent to where your cable box etc is located and plug in the Transmitter Unit. Try the remote and see if it operates your cable box etc. If it doesn't, go back and reposition your Receiver Unit and try again until it does. When you get that to work, move your Transmitter Unit to the room where you ultimately want to use it. Due to electrical outlet placement I had to reposition my Receiver twice. (the directions say it's best if the Receiver and device being operated don't share the same outlet) Since I was in the adjacent room I didn't have to trudge through the whole house while repositioning. After I got it working I moved it upstairs to my bedroom and plugged it in near my TV.....it wouldn't work. So I knew it was a problem with the signal from the Transmitter not getting to the Receiver. So I moved the Transmitter to the other side of the room and .... VOILA it worked perfectly. So when I lay in bed I don't point the remote at the TV to change the channel (which is what you're used to doing) I point it across the room at the Transmitter, and it works fine. According to the specs it should work ANYWHERE in my bedroom (which is far less then 100' away) but since it does work I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. So 1) Make sure you don't mix up the Transmitter and Receiver and 2) make sure you have the edge of each unit (marked with an IR) facing correctly and you shouldn't have a problem. I liked it so much I just ordering two more so I can use the extra transmitters in two other rooms. Beats paying Comcast $7/month for each additional receiver.

Confusing reviews - this might help
For those of you who are reading through the reviews above and can't make heads or tails of them, I want to give you my two cents.I bought these with much apprehension given the disparity in opinions about the device.Let me tell you, these things can work really well, or they may not work at all. Not helpful, right? Let me explain a little more. I got mine out of the package, threw one downstairs by the unit I was controlling. Threw one upstairs from where I wanted to control my device. It worked BEAUTIFULLY!! Then, one day, out of nowhere, it was HORRIBLE! Why? I have two daughters and one of them had moved it slightly downstairs to make room for her doll. I tried to put it back in the same spot, it worked quite poorly. I tried again. Poorly. I tried again. GREAT!!! It was that way for two weeks until we had a small get together. I moved all my electronic equipment out of the way. When I took it back out the next day, I had to spend few minutes getting everything working right, but then it was fine. So, these things work, but they are a little unforgiving. If you buy them, don't give up until they work well for you, then don't so much as sneeze on them, and you'll be very happy. And if you have kids, tell them NOT to move them, but if they do, make sure they fess up, or you'll be pulling your hair out trying to figure out why the remote isn't working all of a sudden, even though those little blonde haired, blue eyed cuties insist they never touched them (which they did).

It'll Get you By...
Here's the quick review...Its pretty simple to set up (about 5-10 min)I have my digital DVR receiver boxes (I have AT&T U-verse) in a cabinet in my living room. Finding the correct places for a good signal for the transmitter and receiver is the tricky part and can take awhile.I found that it NEVER works when I first turn on the TV and DVR Receiver. I always have to point my remote control directly at the cable box first and press buttons on the remote control a few times (its almost like I'm "warming it up"). Then, once I see it responding directly to the DVR receiver, i'll close the cabinet door, and start clicking the remote control directly at the Terk transmitter that is outside of the cabinet (literally my remote will be like an inch away from the transmitter). Then when i see it respond, I can start to back up and continue to click buttons on the remote to make sure it continues to respond. If it continues to respond, I can usually get as far away as I like to get w/o any problems as long as the TV stays on.Sometimes when I start the backing up though, it wont continue to respond and I have to start over.So I'm rating it just 3 stars, because it does work, but i have to "warm it up" EVERY time i use it, which is a nuisance.

A great way to use remotes from equipment to anywhere in the house or office.
These are great. What a time saver. I bought an extra set in case these become unavailable.
