Lovepedal High Power Tweed Twin Vintage Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal
G**N
Worth owning, but could be improved. Excellent vintage tones, especially for rhythm work.
First let me say how much I like the sound of this pedal. It really does a terrific job on what it's meant to do, which is get as close to a cranked Tweed as possible, Various colours and textures of this tonal landscape are possible between the three-way tone stack switch, the level, and the gain knobs, and it cleans up quite well with your guitar's volume knob- really quite beautifully actually.I do have a few niggles about the pedal that I hope are addressed in a future version.1- The toggle switch is a bit of a pain where it is situated. Why not move it up 1/2 an inch, away from being directly between the knobs? It's just a bit fiddly in my opinion when there is such limited space at that spot.2- I have only played mine, but with everything cranked or when gain stacking it into drive another overdrive or the dirty channel of my amp, it picks up a lot of external radio signals, particularly on the middle toggle position. No other pedals I own do this and my patch cords are brand new and high quality. Process of elimination has nailed it to the Lovepedal. At this level of pedal, with their reputation and components, I am very surprised at this seeming lack of correct shielding or a possible faulty component somewhere. But YMMV- it might be just this sample.3- However, my biggest issue is with the taper of the gain knob. It offers virtually no discernible change whatsoever until about the 2:00 position- it seems to me that there would be far more subtleties to be found if the gain knob actually did something in its lower range. It's like: no change... no change... nothing... still nothing... gritty...dirty... and then the very last increment has a big jump in gain. Also note that this pedal is never totally clean, even with the gain dialled right back. Possibilities are great, though; thick, chewy overdrive with great sag and a unique voice to add to your palette.UPDATE- Not sure if it's just my particular pedal, but after owning it for a year or two, and trying different configurations with other pedals, I have to say I'm disappointed in the Lovepedal's ability to be 'stacked'- meaning, it is a great sounding box, and runs well into other pedals; however, if you are into gain stacking with other dirt or boost pedals, it has an issue taking higher inputs. What I've found is that if you push the input of the HPTT with another pedal, it starts farting out a bit- it loses clarity and starts to clip unpleasantly. While fans of 'starved fuzz' type sounds would probably enjoy this, and I can see using it for a few skronky parts, but it's not my thing. There's just not much headroom on the front end. But using it on its own, or in front of other pedals, it's great.**UPDATE 2- one other thing, further to my second comment about noise; when I stack this with certain pedals like my Wampler Plexi, there is a strange high-frequency 'whistle' type of noise. Yes, this is a good sounding pedal, but it seems to have a few issues. Knowing this now, were I looking for this type of pedal, I would likely try another manufacturer. Rating has been downgraded to 3 stars and I'll likely sell mine and get a Wampler '57.Also, I recently moved, and the issue mentioned above with picking up radio signals seems to have resolved. Likely poor power or something where I was before.
