but in the end I do like them. They are crazy small though
There are definitely pros and cons to these containers, but in the end I do like them. They are crazy small though. The "extra large" one is about the size of a small sandwich container, the "small" container is about the size of a standard ice-cube tray ice cube. I was buying for a toddler, so just fine for us, but if you're feeding a teenager, probably not going to work. The lids are a bit difficult to take off and put back on, but considering they are leak-proof its to be expected. The colors are great and the material is BPA-free so definitely a plus. You can also buy separately an outer lunch box to hold all of them which is nice.I do have to add, although its totally my fault for not reading closely enough, but not all of the pictures are for the exact item. There is one picture showing 5 boxes, but with this one you only get 4.Also, the price is about $4.00 more than on the laptop lunches website.

They fit in a vintage metal lunch box
I've got a few other pieces of plastic ware, and most of them are shaped in such a way that I can't fit more than just one piece in a standard metal lunch box at a time-- what a waste!I found the Bento Buddies boxes while looking for recipes for onigiri-- Japanese rice balls stuffed with various salty fillings. The description and site I found SAYS that these will fit in a metal lunchbox, but since the site also sells "vintage" metal lunchboxes of their own, I wasn't sure that they meant just theirs or the "real" ones from the 1970's and 1980's.Well, they do.Actually, the way they fit into a vintage rectangular metal lunch box, you can fit two layers of them in combo-- they don't ALL fit together as one layer in the metal boxes, so you would not be able to fit two COMPLETE sets of these in one lunch box. One whole set definitely fits, with two sets you could mix and match four from the three largest sizes. And I didn't find the lids hard to open at all. They don't *snap* into place, it's more of a friction fit. But I'm not a small child nor someone with arthritis; maybe if I was either, they would be hard to open.I might buy a second set the next time I need to order anything from Amazon.

Preparing lunches is so easy!
I love the new Bento boxes. I had the original that I bought a few years ago, and it has hold up really well, although we've lost most of the inner compartments throughout the years. My only complaint was that all of the containers didn't have lids, and they solved that with the 2.0 system. My daughter is so excited about starting Kinder with her new gear, and she's already thinking of things to put inside the boxes. It helps me with portion control for my kids -- I don't pack too much or too little anymore. I like the different options for using the big box with two smaller ones or using two medium ones and two smaller ones. It's more accommodating for leftovers, depending on what she'll be taking to school with her. I ordered extra compartments because we're really good at losing them. To address another parents' complaint, the plastic hinge is still going strong on our old box, so the chance of it breaking off after years of use appears to be pretty small. The other issue is that the lids may be too hard for kids to get them back on. I told my daughter that she can't take her special lunchbox or bento box to school unless she's big enough to get the lids on and off, and she practiced to make sure she could. Problem solved!

Just OK
I purchased this kit about a year ago. I also have the outer container, and I guess I missed something when I bought it, because these pieces do not fit in the original box. The original box doesn't closed very well, and so it leaks (the original containers with the set do not have lids). Badly, both with the original containers and these. These containers are OK when used singly: I fill them with small portions of oatmeal or desserts when I do a batch cooking on weekends for grab/go breakfasts (or after dinner desserts). However, just like the original outer container, these also leak. The lids are hard to get to seal or something, I'm not sure... even when I think its sealed, it still leaked.I just can't use them for the intended purpose, which was for lunches. I have wound up with a backpack full of gunk too often. The containers also do not fit in anything except their specially designed lunch tote, and since the containers leak, I went through two lunch totes in a year before giving up and going to plastic grocery bags.I'm looking for something else to use now. I've given the product 2 stars because I can and do use the containers in my freezer as I said, but I'm disappointed... Especially since I purchased an original kit at a local grocery store, and then also purchased these since I keep trying to pack my lunches on Sunday evenings.

I love these!
I purchased 2 sets of the Bento Buddies 2.0 Containers for my son who is in Kindergarten. We have used them for about 5 weeks now and LOVE THEM!! They are very easy for him to open and close. I place them in his regular lunchbox and the square/rectangle shapes make it easy to fit everything. We actually haven't used the larger sandwich size yet b/c it's pretty big. Instead, I just cut his sandwich in half and place the 2 halves on top of each other in the next smaller size.I love the fact that these containers make me stop and think about what I put in his lunchbox. I always put a fruit in one, a veggie in one, a dip or almonds in the smallest one, a sandwich in one, and then a snack in the last one (this is why I purchased TWO sets of the containers). They are dishwasher safe and do NOT leak while in the lunchbox since all 4 containers come withe LIDS. I think you will be very happy with these containers :)
