The duplicator i3 is based on the revolutionary work of reprap core developer josef pr?ša (prusa). Wanhao is proud to introduce an entry-level 3d printer targeted at customers who want to begin 3d printing without having to build a kit. This is a pre-assembled steel frame prusa i3the best-selling reprap in 3d printing! amongst the features packed neatly into this platform are an mk10 single extruder, a gcode based micro-controller, and a standard heated build plate. Unlike most other prusa offerings on the market, this i3 comes standard with a custom electronics housing (also in stamped steel). For the value this machine can not be beat. This printer is the ultimate reprap!

A High Performance Mixed Bag
I pre-ordered and received one of the very first Wanhao i3 printers. It printed very well straight out of the box, but has required several performance and reliability upgrades to really hit above its weight. Please keep in mind that Wanhao has been making revisions/upgrades to the machines on a regular basis since release. This review will assume you get the latest revision and ignore many of the issues mine had.PROS:-Low price-Arrives 95% assembled and ready to print in under an hour-Tethered electronics box allows easy placement of screen and potentially keeping the electronics out of a hot enclosure.-Large build area (for price)-Surprisingly high precision and speed potential. I have made better prints with my i3 than the Ultimaker and Printrbot previously.-Easy to work on-Lots of upgrades/ mods possible-Helpful (but new) user base - here is one of them: [...]-Works with any slicer that exports gcode including CURA, Slic3r, and Simplify3dCONS:-Lots of reports of poor workmanship. However, most all problems I've seen are easily fixed by someone with moderate skills and/or the ability to use a forum to ask questions.-Very noisy power supply fan-PTFE tube in hot end limits max temp to 240C. Aftermarket all metal hot end is available (search MK10 all metal)-Customer service is mixed. Pick a reputable reseller.(updated for version 2.1 8/2/16) DESIGN FLAWS (Wanhao will hopefully fix in later revisions):FIXED -One of the X axis bearing blocks rubs on a beltFIXED -3 LM8UU X axis bearings are inferior to a more simple 2 LM8LUU (long) bearing arrangement. This would also be cheaper for Wanhao to make.-The Y axis has too much flex in both the end plates and the motor/idler brackets.-The e-stop button is not accessible with the factory front cover plate (printable upgrade on thingiverse)-The X and Y axis idler pulley bolts should be longer and have a jam nut on the end. This would allow the bolt to be tight without crushing the spacer or bearing. It would also add stiffness.-The motherboard does not come with a bootloader, this makes it very hard to upgrade/change firmware-The electronics box wire harness is too shortAll of the design issues listed can be fixed with aftermarket mods. I do not regret my purchase and would buy again.

The machine is OK. The Melzi board is a inferior product. The original came with the printer was defect and was refurbished board. After days of frustration. the replacement came. The USB worked for about a week and failed suddenly. The factory GM and USA tech claimed that USB should not be used and not compatible with computer. They stopped answering after I asked them why USB stopped working after a week if it was not compatible. The factory support is not considered as top notch. I give up on them. So buy with caution and prepare extra money for replacement..

Overall, a good value. Know what you're getting into.
First off, I did not purchase this printer from Amazon, I went through Wanhao USA, which I would highly recommend you NOT do. Their customer service is quite lackluster. As for the printer, it is a budget printer, a tinkerer's model, if you will. It will more than likely not print accurately out of the box, and will probably require a vigorous squaring and leveling session with a carpenter's square. There are literally hundreds of modifications you can make to this printer to make it more accurate, faster, and more efficient, but they are not in any way required. However, as with any mechanical object, this printer will require regular maintenance and replacement of worn parts. With minimal modifications (glass bed, custom bed leveling thumbwheels, Thorped cooler) I am getting excellent prints, but it was a bit of work and time to get there. The Wanhao i3 group on Facebook will be your best friend. Also, watch your wiring in the control box, there are infrequent reports of electrical fires. This printer will test your patience and your skills, so be warned.

SO ours lit on fire in the control module after right about a month of owning it. Waiting on Wanhao customer service to help us with that, but yeah ours is totally dead because again it caught fire. We have a 2.1 which isn't supposed to have this issue.

Buena compra.

Fantastic print detail
Fantastic print detail, very high-quality prints, however, no matter how hard I try I cannot get good bed adhesion, I have tried everything, every single time the raft ends up as a pile of goo trailing the nozzle, possibly a slicer issue but I think it's more to do with the z-end stop setup Wanhao implements, this also leads to a print bed that CONSTANTLY needs to be adjusted. Edit: I have discovered the wonders of plate glass, PVA glue, and Isopropanol, and now I am more than happy with this little printer :)
