Great Printer
I have used a number of different printers to get as close to photo quality output as possible.(Epson Photo, Alps and HP) This printer is however in a different class when it comes to printing snap shots in a 4x6 format. You cannot tell the difference from 35mm prints sent to be developed and the output of this printer. (except you can edit these before you print them and print only what you want)This is a great photo printer and the paper is now available any number of places.

Obsolete printer with no supplies anywhere
I do not understand why this printer is still sold... it is almost impossible to buySony Svm-25ls Photo Paper Packs. Noone makes it anymore. Whatever is sold, it is a remainder of stock or just accidental posession from many years ago and it is is EXPENSIVE. This printer is useless if there is no supplies.

Photo Lab quality prints from home!
I had done a lot of research on the Sony digital photo printer, and some others, online and decided to go with the Sony DPP-SV55. I was excited to try it out because the reviews online raved about it, but I was totally blown away when I saw the quality of the first few prints I made. The glossy finish, dye sublimation richness, sharp color, and 4x6 borderless prints make them indistinguishable from prints you get from a Photo Lab. We have young kids and do a lot of scrapbooking, so the glossy finish images were essential, since ink jet images will fade after only two years.Setup was very easy. In a matter of 10 minutes, I was plugged in and making prints. The paper packs make the process even easier because each pack comes with the film cartridge to print all the sheets from the pack. Loading the paper and cartridges is also very easy. The prints come out fast, and you don't have to wait for them to dry.The software setup is easy, one quick installation from the included CD. It basically installs the print drivers for the printer. Once the printer is connected with a USB cable (not included), I was immediately able to print directly from the imaging software that came with my Sony D50 Cybershot camera. It also has a built in Creative Print lab program, but you have to hook up the printer to a TV to view and work with it. But the images are nice and you can do some cool things like print photo greeting cards and calendars. There was no graininess in the prints at all, and the images came from my above mentioned camera (2.1 megapixels). All of the prints we have made turned out wonderful.I suppose I should mention a couple of cons, but their really not a big deal: The unit does not come with a USB cable for some reason, even though it is required to print from a PC (It does include the video cable). Second, some of the colors on our prints (particularily reds) we a little off and overly bright, but all-in-all, we are very thrilled with the prints it makes.

junk
This printer has always been a pain in the neck to use, since you needed to have sony memory sticks to make it work. Since I graduated several years ago to flash memory, I have to download the pictures to disc, then transfer them to the stick. Bad enough, but now the machine refuses to recognise the 4 - 6" prints. It will print the little 3 - 5", but when I put in the larger paper and cartridge, the same pictures come out blank. I am sooooo thrilled. Like I said, junk.

Bad luck connecting to computer
I recently bought this printer. I tried installing it on two of my computers : windows 98 and 2000 and I didnt have any luck on either of them. I read the directions from the manual and still didnt have any luck. I am taking it back and getting something else.

Some hints for getting the best output
This printer produces impressive output, although the colors have a little too much magenta. The resolution is specified as 403 dpi but to get a 1:1 pixel mapping from (say) photoshop you need to set the image resolution to 403.66 dpi.It is correct that Sony do not officially make the Mac OS X drivers for this printer available for download. They do ship on the install CD though. A google search for "DPP-EX5_EX7" should locate the driver on the internet.

Excellent photos depending on OS
I installed the driver software on my Windows 2000 laptop and was immediately getting great prints -- one of the easiest Windows installations I've had. (Note that I'm just using this product to print from PCs, not directly from memory stick/card.)I'm using "small format" prints (4"x3") because the source is my kids' JamCam digital camera which has sub-megapixel resolution (640x480 I think). I used Mozilla 1.3 to print from because it has a nice preview feature and image scaling. As it turns out I got glossy photos with beautiful color and no visible pixelation when printing from Windows 2000.However, the prints I got from my iMac and from my Windows 98 PC were not quite as nice! In both cases close inspection yielded visible pixelation on the borders of subjects in the image. Furthermore, with Windows 98, the number of colors was reduced, with visible transitions from one shade to the next.Perhaps the pixelation is simply because of the low-resolution source material, and that Windows 2000 has a better dithering algorithm for smoothing these pixels -- that is, maybe this won't affect you if you own a megapixel camera. But I can't explain the lack of color ranges on Windows 98.Anyway, if you have Win2K, the prints are truly comparable to Kodak prints from an analog camera and the ease of use is excellent.

Mac Users Avoid This Product!!!!
I used this printer for quite some time with my Pismo running OS 9.2. When I purchased a Powerbook G4 running OS X, this printer was obsolete, i.e. no drivers available. Sony was absolutely not interested in making a driver for this printer and could not care less about the customer STUCK with this pathetic piece of equipment. If you are a mac user forget it. This printer is not worth a dime. If you already have one, find a PC user to sell it to. Shame on Sony for not working with Apple. If I could give it a rating lower than 1 I would.
