Fury Max: My War Gone by

An American Eulogy
Avoid reading this story all the way through if you happen to be in a good mood. Actually, you might want to consider avoiding that if you happen to be in the right kind of lousy mood (like I was when I read this all the way through the first time). Let it be understood that this is some of Garth Ennis' best character-driven writing of all the works I've seen him do over all the years. It's also not as though Garth was being about coy which way this story was going from the start. But to adequately understand how dark the end of the tunnel is, you have to read "My War Gone By" foryourself. One consistent theme with all of Garth's Nick Fury stories is futility. No matter what the man does, no matter how many people he kills, no matter how often he bucks the odds, the only thing Nick has ever been successful at doing is surviving. As the man himself makes clear again and again as he coughs out his last will and testament into an ancient reel-to-reel recorder, nothing else he's ever done has had any lasting effect. The stories he recounts are a veritable roll call of post World War II fiascoes: French Indochina aka Vietnam just before the fall of Dien Bien Phu, the Bay of Pigs invasion in Cuba, Vietnam again (which Fury rightly labels "the greatest American f***up of all time"), and 1980s Nicaragua on the eve of the Iran-Contra scandal. The toll all the carnage, ethical compromises and flat-out chicanery takes on the people around Fury winds upbecoming truly horrific in the case of the supporting cast...but it could be argued that Fury pays the worst price of them all at the end.Parlov's artwork can be best described in the same way Fury describes the young Frank Castle: "don't cut corners but don't overthink it either." Some have described it as cartoony (a designation that actually belongs with Garth's partner on his previous two Nick Fury stories, Darrick Robertson) but I see it more as a series of battlefield sketches. This is not a pretty story and therefore the unprettified artwork is a good match for it, emphasizing the sleaze, tawdriness and flat-out corruption of the moral landscape being talked about. It also has a revealing effect on the supporting cast as they age through the decades, becoming physical representations of the choices they've made along the way.I'm likely to be among the final generation of comic readers who knew this version of Colonel Fury as first conceived by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, later redefined by Jim Steranko as a blue collar James Bond and now put back into a real world context by Garth during this century. Between "The Ultimates" and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Samuel Jackson edition (which I have an affection for, albeit for different reasons) is going to be the one that carries on from here. As such...rest in peace Nicholas Joseph Fury, even if it is in the bowels of the hell you made for yourself.

Lesser appreciated Marvel hero given a life!
Best Nick Fury imaginable! Like most Garth Ennis stories, I was sad to finish reading it! Nothing tops the Punisher MAX series he did, but this is in that same wheelhouse for sure! I highly recommend this one!

Garth Ennis' Magnum Opus.
I think this is the best thing Garth Ennis has written thus far, and that's saying a lot given how great his Punisher run is (so great it heavily inspired Netflix's The Punisher). This is a dark, enthralling, soul-crushing masterpiece. Provides excellent characterizations of Nick Fury and supporting characters while serving as a potent meditation on American Cold War incompetence, missteps, fiascos, crimes, and corruption. Great writing, great art. Easily the best Nick Fury comic. Get this book and read it.

we dont see the "boom" like in the first series
I been following Ennis during her MAX stint, Punisher, the first Fury series even War is Hell, and I'm a big fan of his stories, with that said, with this new volume of Fury, we are still getting our share of Ennis action however its a little bit more build up through the years, we dont see the "boom" like in the first series, but it's a good ride till the end, Parlov's art is consistent and well rendered however I'm not loving the color in the book, seems a litle bit faded.

Rock Solid Fury Classic
Marvel Fan since 1962,This is one of the best graphic novels I have read in a long time.Very much adult rated,swearing,sex,etc....The Nick Fury in this tome,is the one I grew up lovin. The story line, thru out the decades, seemless, and very well written. The artwork, well its not the King,or even Steranko, but has a very gruff, and effective style of its own. This book ranks with any Kirby-Lee slash Steranko offering.Brillant, and highly recommended for ADULTS ONLY!

Nick Fury + Garth Ennis = read it!
Wow. Garth Ennis writing Nick Fury’s history is a match made in heaven. Definitely not an uplifting book, but well written and the art is great too. For Garth Ennis fans who aren’t sure if they want to read his Marvel stuff, this should be your intro.

Fun Nick Fury War Story, Ennis at his Best
Garth Ennis knocks it out of the park yet again with this phenomenal Nick Fury war story. It details Nick's involvement in several military operations over the course of several decades and is always a fun read. There are a lot of interesting people he meets and/or kills along the way (including a certain young Marine sniper named Frank) and the fan-polarizing Barracuda.

Excellent
I bought this comic because I enjoyed Garth Ennis' work on the punisher. I found this book excellent and actually enjoyed it even more than the Punisher series. This is one of my favorite comic book.

Wer lieber übermenschliche Superhelden Grafik-Novels lesen will, sollte sich besser nach was Anderem umsehen.***** Kaufen!

Excelente!!
