Be sure you only need an upgrade before buying this

Still the Best Bet for Serious Word Processing
I've been a WordPerfect [WP] user since the DOS days because of its several features not available in other processor, including those from long time word processor provider Microsoft.I tried Word, in several variations, but quickly abandoned it because trying to edit documents for formatting issues in it was something akin to a nightmare. In Word I had to resort to things like converting documents to text, then format them to gain a semblance of what the document should look like. With WP, on the other hand, I merely had to turn on Reveal Codes and find the troubling codes that, often, were several lines ahead of where the problem appeared.I would have given WP five stars, but a few simple issues yet exist and some changes disappoint me. For example, I love being able to look at the content of documents without the significant hassle of opening them. However, it seems past versions better handled this than current versions. Perhaps it's because there are more types of graphic and word files than back in the day. Regardless, being able to do that function for all common formats, without buying add-ons would be a huge point maker. Then there are simple things, when you're blowing through a twenty-nine page document. Say you want to change the font or font size of a highlighted area. Wouldn't clicking anywhere in the font box to open the drop downs make more sense than requiring the user to, carefully, click on the down arrow? All and all, WP is still hands above that other processor for serious or critical word processing. Because of its versatility, I've even used it to create photo identification cards for a group. The resulting appearance rivaled what government agencies produce. While you may be able to do that with the other processor, you would be hard pressed to correct code problems that messed up the appearance of final product.

Updated review
06/23/2015Another patch installed. No more file crashing and about 2 months ago I tried out the form design feature. The form fields don't have quite all of Adobe's form options but it does have most of them, and the conversion from WordPerfect to pdf worked at the click of a virtual button. It was then easy to add the few additional field attributes from within Acrobat. Yippee! No more having to redo forms for my clients in WordPerfect then convert to Acrobat, then set up the actual fields, sizes, arrangements, names & other basic attributes in Acrobat from scratch each time after modifying the form again in WordPerfect when the client wants "just one more thing"... This new form field feature cut my form update times from 5-to-6 hours to one hour or less.Image importing which was occasionally buggy in X5, seems to work flawlessly now.I also upgraded my Dragon Dictate, which plays well with WP X7.It appears to import Excel files perfectly. I haven't tried to export to Excel, as Quattro Pro does everything I need to do and more easily than Excel.Every time I need to print something, I am so happy I'm using WordPerfect. The print macros are so flexible and easy to use. It's nice to be able to override standard print sizes, and when something gets wacky, the "reveal codes" allows me to see the problem within seconds. Upgrading to a well-deserved 5 stars.I noticed a few 1-star reviews where people tried to upgrade from the student edition to the standard edition unsuccessfully. I believe that Amazon will usually issue a partial refund (if software has been opened), even when it's the buyer's mistake. That's not a problem with the software, that's a problem with the purchaser not understanding the upgrade licensing requirements. It would be good if all software vendors were more "in your face" regarding hardware requirements and upgrade terms.========================================================================================================10/05/2014Corel has released a patch for X7 and although the release notes don't mention fixing the hyperlink problem, it appears to have been fixed. I also am able to browse and open files without crashing the program or getting an "access denied" error. So I am updating my rating to 4 stars. After further testing if everything works as well as it should, I will update this review again.========================================================================================================So far on configuration WordPerfect X7 has crashed multiple times. It wanted to set certain default directories that did not exist on my computer, then crashed when I tried to browse to an existing directory. Had to type in the directory names I wanted by hand.Second problem was when I wanted to set the graphics default directory to "C:/User/<myname>\My Documents\My Pictures\". That directory existed already but WP7 insisted on creating another directory with the same name. I have a screenshot of that, it was not a typo on my part.Thirdly, when I tried to open a file for the first time that was 2 levels up from the now existing default directory, it gave me an "access denied" error although I have admin privileges. Specifically running WPX7 as an administrator still does not allow access. Oddly enough, choosing the file then using "Open with..." WPX7 allowed the file to open. Finally, I can't browse to another directory in order to save a file there either. I have to save it in the default directory, then move the file using Windows file manager. Grrrrrr..I've been a WordPerfect user since DOS days but have never had problems such as this on any previous version. And i have had a lot of previous versions. I only installed WPX7 because my X5 QuattroPro was not converting hyperlinks to pdf hyperlinks when converting to pdf. And yes, I had the "convert hyperlinks" box checked in the "convert to pdf" options. WordPerfect X5 was converting hyperlinks just fine -- it was just QuatroPro that was not converting hyperlinks.I'll try with X7 a little longer since I cleaned off my X5 installation before loading X7. But I am seriously wondering if I'll have to remove X7 and reinstall X5 in order to get any work done this week. I would have expected more subtle bugs on a new product, not this blatant inability to perform basic file handling.Bottom line is, I can't recommend X7 right now. Maybe after a patch is released fixing the above bugs. So far it's not clear that the rest of the product is any more reliable. It's hard to evaluate when you can't get past the basic steps of setting default directories or opening or writing files.Very disappointing so far. I will post an update if the bugs get fixed anytime soon.

X7 Standard upgrade won't install.
This product will not install and I can't get a phone number to talk to someone. It was ordered on Nov 23 but was a Christmas gift so I didn't know it wouldn't recognize the serial number until I tried to install and register it.

Close to 20 years with WordPerfect
After having had issues with WordPerfect Office X5, I am really glad that The upgrade to X7 went without problems and the program is once again running smoothly. I have appreciated now WordPerfect Office for close than 20 years, especially such functions as "reveal codes", "print as booklets" (which Corel offered long before others), spell-checkers, dictionaries and theasurers in multiple languages without having to pay for them additionally, and saving files as PDFs and in various formats (e.g. as .doc) in few seconds.Alas, there are two reasons why I am less pleased:There is no printed manual any more (and yes, sometimes I really like to have "a piece of paper"). One can find a PDF version at http://www.corel.com/static/product_content/wordperfect/x7/wpox7_user_guide_en.pdf, but I could not find any mention to this link on the box that contained the single DVD.And whereas Corel proudly introduces the "running multiple instances" as progress, I find it utterly frustrating and a regression that I cannot open multiple documents from the explorer any longer and have them opened in taps (one of the reasons I really liked WordPerfect and hated Microsoft Word). This only works now, when one opens the files, using the "Open-Command" while WordPerfect is already running and there was no reference to this feature in the PDF manual. Conclusion: It was worth the money to upgrade from X5 to X7 ( I always skip one upgrade), in spite of the issues where I am less pleased.
