Q: Do you have to use the Purple Leaf base or can you use another type (that is less expensive)?

I just screwed it down to my deck, it has nicely spaced holes and it's worked really well.

Q: Does it rotate at all?

Yes, it’s actually quite nice the way it works. The crank that raises and lowers the umbrella pulls out and goes into a different hole to rotate the umbrella in a full 360 degrees.

Q: will the umbrella go completely vertical?

Very close, excellent quality construction. Very versatile umbrella.

Q: What is the size & shape of the main support post that the handle slides up/down on? Is it square or round?

Post is “Rectangle” and very strong. ours holds up to the ocean breeze daily. I will be buying another
