Don't hesitate, this is a good one.......
I have had several small driver tools like this but they were lower voltage versions. Very useful for small around the house type assemblies and or repetitive install jobs. I didn't want the size and weight of a pistol grip hand-held drill type driver, but needed more power and a light. I love this tool! Makita is the successful pioneer into Lithium battery tools worth getting for the last 15 years. The 18V series is an testament to their perseverance and deserved leadership. Now all other tool companies are pouring on their models and going to 20V. Makita is far ahead with all the different tools they offer, i.e. drill, blower, vacuum, LED shop light, job fan not to mention all the power hammer drills etc. So for me to stray from the 18V was a departure from my mantra to stick with it to take advantage of the battery synergy. I do not regret it in the least. It comes with 2 batteries and they charge so quickly you will never be without power unless you forgot to plug the charger in, it happens, haha. The speed control is good as well as the light weight and LED light in the right spot. The tork is more than enough for the tasks I have. This is a welcome addition to my tool arsenal.

Great for Light Work
Purchased this unit to replace an 8-year old Milwaukee stick. The Milwaukee worked OK - but power, low RPM, and battery life were big drawbacks. It was light, though - and that's important to me.The Makita is a heavier unit, but I'm adjusting to it pretty quickly. Battery life is excellent - a big plus. Power is a bit low, but not a real issue. I use it primarily for assembly/disassembly of electronic cabinets and components. The high RPM setting is perfect for most tasks, and makes short work of removing longer screws. Surprisingly, this unit works pretty well as a pinch-hit drill, and delivers adequate torque for light drilling and pilot holes. The locking chuck is great, I never realized what I was missing. Don't expect the performance of a dedicated drill, though - it is a screwdriver, after all. A nice feature nonetheless.A few complaints:I wish the grip would securely lock when placed in the inline position. I often use it manually to tighten or break screws. The beefy grip and heavy weight would be great for this - if it would stay locked. It's easy to have the grip fold back on you when you bear down, which can be a real pain. My Milwaukee was worse in this respect, though.I like the fact that Makita has a time-out feature which turns the LED light off when left on for a time. It's easy to accidently hit the switch and not realize it.If it holds up under constant use, it's money well-spent. A 3-year warranty suggests a quality product. I've had great luck with Makita products in the past, and expect this to last for a good long time.UPDATE: 10/2011Have used this tool quite a bit now, and I'm very pleased with it. I've become used to the few minor flaws - except for the non-locking grip. That still bugs me, but I can live with it. At this point, the only thing preventing a five-star rating is the price.

Best Money Can Buy...
My old AEG (now made by Milwaukee) rechargeable screwdriver that could be bent or used straight (like this model) has seen better days and I've gone through at least 6 battery replacements on it over the years, so I researched what was out there in today's market. I stumbled on this model and, despite its very high price, I opted to give it a try. It's wonderful - slightly larger than my old model but with loads more power and the batteries charge super-fast. And the 600 RPM "drill" speed is great for little jobs around the house. It also holds its charge far longer with the lithium ion battery, when compared to the Ni-Cad's in my old AEG model. So, it's charged and ready to use even if it's been several weeks between uses. It's designed well, works well, and reeks of quality. If I could change one thing it would be to turn on the light automatically when you run the unit. A separate switch seems a bit cumbersome - but, it's still a nice feature despite the separate switch. Buy one - you'll love it.

I have never had a driver like this before
I have never had a driver like this before. But I have owned a lot of power tools over the years and this one is vary well made.I bought this to use when working on my RC vehicles and it works great! The batteries last a long time and charge fairly fast. It's comfortable to use. And works flawlessly.I have to say that this is one of the best tools I have ever owned.I did a lot of reading on it before I decided to buy it. And almost every review I read was the same. The loved it! And so do I!I have only to things that I would like to see changed on it.There should be a lock to keep it from folding or unfolding. And there is only a detent to help hold it in place. This is not a large problem, but it can at times be annoying. And lastly I would like to see a lower torque setting. There are times where the lowest setting (setting 1) is still high enough to strip the plastic parts of my RC cars. It's rare, but does happen at times.Other then that this is a great tool!

This ia a great drill/driver. However the ancillary item leave a lot to be desired. Batteries are great no problem, but one two driver bits shipped with the product, which is to say two double ended phillips driver bits called PH1 and PH2. The bits are specifically designed to fit the driver. I looked on the Makita website but it seems Makita does not offer a flat head bit, nor do the offer a torx bit that specifically fits this driver.. Be that as it may I can buy off the shelf single ended bits, but not double ended bits as came with the product. Good thinking Makita other wise this product would compete well with the DeWalt driver which is identical except it runs off NI-MH batteries, not Lithium.
