The Best of Wedding Photography

Great photos. That's about it.
Of the few books I recently read about wedding photography, this is probably the one with the best pictures and the least interesting text.It purports to cover the technical aspects of creating great wedding pictures, but the result is pretty shallow if you have any idea how it is actually done and is mostly a pretext to show pictures that are actually excellent. There are still a few very good suggestions and tricks, such as how to have a bride drape her shoulders in the back of her dress before backing into a car, ensuring that (1) the dress is not too crumpled, (2) any dirt would be on the underside, and (3) she can get out the normal way without tripping.Otherwise for the technique, being a 2007 book (six years old as of this review) makes it pretty much outdated. Its original edition as far as I could find was 2004; it was republished in 2005 and 2007 (this one) and since then...My suggestion: if you want lighting information, go check Direction & Quality of Light or the Master Lighting Guide for Portrait Photographers. If you are looking for posing guidelines, Roberto Valenzula's Picture Perfect Practice comes to mind. For flash usage, Joe McNally's Sketching Light (for nikonistas) or Syl Arena's Speedliter's Handbook (for canonitas) will give you way more quality information. For the business of wedding photography, don't miss Glen Johnson's Digital Wedding Photography which although also a little outdated has the merit of covering it all in depth. What I use this Best of Wedding Photography for is inspiration and examples, relying on the usually quite accurate comments for each photo.I hope this helps. Don't hesitate to ask me questions in comments.

Plenty of advice and info for the aspiring wedding photographer.
I got the chance to shoot my cousin's wedding, having never done a wedding (or much of anything so exciting before), and this book helped immensely. Some poor working pro missed out, I had a blast, my cousin was very pleased with the results. The advice and tips in this book were easily worth the price and I would confidently recommend it to anyone wanting to dip their toe into what is a fairly specialised field.

Very informative
This was a good read, I learnt a lot for the price tag. This book seemed a lot like all his other books (even the newer editions) so he's probably just printing the same book over and over again with different pictures, covers, and titles. This book seemed to be a nice compilation of everything.

Helpful and easy to digest
I read the previous book and realized that this was an update which shows the change in wedding photography in just the last few years. Photos are great.

Excellent Book for a Quick Introduction To Wedding Photography
This is one of the better photography books that I have read. And I have read a lot!It is by no means and exhaustive tutorial on how to be a wedding photographer. But it will give you enough information to get you into shooting weddings and through your first few events. This book covers a lot of ground, from photographic style to the business of photography. It is very well written and keeps your interest. I finished off most of it on a flight from LA to Chicago and I usually sleep on this flight! It definitely helped me get through my first two weddings this year and I keep on opening it up to brush up on things and get more tips.If you are thinking about getting into wedding photography, nothing beats experience, but this book will give you a good introduction.RECOMMENDED!!!

Glaring error
There's lots of good info here, but on page 46 the author relates that a friend lost many shots from a wedding because an assistant reformatted CF cards without saving the files, and that thus the only photos that remained were those on the cards left in the cameras. It is REALLY widely known that card formatting doesn't wipe the data from the cards. There's plenty of software, eg. that which comes *with* SanDisk cards that'll retrieve most of the files from a formatted card so long as it hasn't been re-used. Whoever this friend of the author's is, he's pretty clueless, and I'm astonished that Hurter himself didn't know this.
