Works well - Starter Clutch is eliminated
Ok, you have to get over the hesitancy of cutting the current crankshaft if you have a 399671 Starter Clutch type arrangement currently. And the 399671 Starter Clutch is eliminated with this installation -- the 'Frequently Bought Together' should not group the 693900 Rewind Starter Replacement and 399671 Starter Clutch together. Installation of the 693900 Rewind Starter Replacement goes very smoothly and it works great.

Better than the ball bearing clutch set up!
My 1993 Snapper model 33128BE rear engine riding mower had the old ball bearing clutch and recoil starter. The plastic was stripped out and wouldn’t engage and the ball bearings were messed up in the clutch causing a squealing noise.I ordered this kit and installed. Disassembly and reassembly took around 2 hours. I couldn’t find instructions anywhere on the internet and had to wait on the part to come to see the instructions. With the old clutch removed I had to saw off some of the crankshaft leaving 1/8” inch over the threads. The nut that screws on the threads is a 5/8”. I had to use a 15/16” socket to tighten the nut, luckily I had one in a 3/4” drive set. The socket doesn’t come in standard sets as it’s pretty big. Be sure to coat the threads with some anti-seize in case the bolts and nuts needs to be removed again. The rewind starter fit perfectly on my motor cover using the existing holes. Some covers are spot-welded instead of screwed. If this is the case you have to drill the welds out with a 3/16” drill bit for the new screws and nuts.On a side note be sure to install the rewind starter with the nuts facing up and the bolts being under the cover. If the nuts go under the cover you will have a clearance issue.Overall, I’m very pleased. The mower starts on the first pull. This kit of course isn’t as robust as the old ball bearing clutch set up, but it requires a lot less maintenance and is simple to work on. It has a set of dogs that come out and grab the starter cup when the cord is pulled. I’m sure over time the dogs could malfunction or break. I think it’s an upgrade over the original part though!

Works great!
This is updated version . If you have an older model you have to cut the extension of the crankshaft off & thread the replacement part on . No big deal , just have to have the necessary tools. The instructions are enclosed w/the part.

Works awesome
Great replacement for my 8 hp log splitter. Just had to cut the crank shaft down but it's better then the OME.

No instructions included
Let me start with the good news: It works and it looks like a better design that the broken original. It took me nearly three hours of measuring, pre-fitting parts, and examination before I got to pull the rope to start the engine, and I'm pretty handy. All the extra steps were necessary because you have to cut a couple inches off the crankshaft to install this recoil and I had to verify this part would fit before I set about hacking up my engine. I'm very disappointed with this, especially since I feel I paid a premium price for a part from the OE manufacturer. C'mon Briggs and Stratton! Print some instruction or at least include a link to a video. You should be ashamed of yourselves.

This included all necessary parts for conversion / update
Starter rope assembly began to self engage and burn itself up with friction... This updated replacement did the trick, but BEWARE that even as a part ‘update’ from Briggs, it MAY REQUIRE that you CUT the CRANKSHAFT !!! Cut was required to provide clearance as this kit removes the original starter (ball bearing) clutch... The bb clutch was a better /more rigid design, but this did install without too much trouble... Instructions are included for multiple applications so be certain to follow the steps for your application....

It's a retrofit kit that does not contain all the parts to retrofit prolly Briggs and Strattons fault more than the seller though

Convert bearing clutch easy
Was easy to install, less than 20 minutes with right tools. Was able to convert old system since the old bearings rusted.
