Cool is the Operative Word, will NOT be Cold
Okay unlike a lot of people who reviewed I am familiar with swamp coolers aka evaporative air coolers. We live in the desert part of CO (yes there is desert in CO, came as a shock to us too) and that is what most people use to cool homes. When we moved here darn near died, swamp coolers suck donkey. A friend gifted me a window AC and that is how we survived for three years. Well this summer we moved and the window design in new townhouse does not work with a window unit. This worried me a lot, add to that I'm going through menopause and a summer with triple digit temperatures is not going to be fun.. Saw this fan and thought this might be what was needed.I bought two, one for the bedroom and one for the living room. The plan was to place strategically to assist the house swamp cooler in cooling better. I have been very pleased with the result. I am no longer miserable. There are days where I don't even use the cool feature; I just use the fan and living room is just fine. Have yet to need cool feature upstairs, came close last night but not yet.I like the fact that the blades move left to right, granted not oscillating but still better than not moving, helps hit the entire room. I can feel the cool factor when the fan blows directly on me when it isn't blowing on me the room itself is still pleasant. While we don't have one of these fans in my boys' room, with our using them their room is noticeably cooler than from when we used a window unit. They no longer mind spending time in their room.I gave it 4 out of 5 stars because it's not even a month old yet and the clear covering over the control panel is warping (see photos). Which is odd as we actually don't touch it, we use the remote to control. Another reason for the one-star deduction is the back of the remote popped off from the locked position, and of course not I cannot find it. Grrr.I know it says indoor/outdoor. We tried it outside once, you absolutely have to be sitting directly in front of it to feel any coolness. We didn't purchase it for outdoor use but on those days when the little one wants to play in his splash pool, it does help me to have this blowing directly on me so I don't bake. When I first turned on the downstairs fan, it did spray and mist water, which if I had been outside would have been great, not so much inside with carpet. I know in some of the reviews I read others mentioned this issue too. I think someone said to sort of wiggle the hose around and it should stop. That's what I did and it hasn't wet me since.Like everyone else I load the drawer up with ice and then pour minimal amount of water (NOTE: you must have water in the drawer or alarm will sound and shut off. Unit will NOT work on cool setting if you only put ice. If you use just the fan setting, no water needed). so that I get really nice cool air blast.I didn't see anyone mention this and if it was in the product description there is a nature mode. Still not quite sure what that is all about. Basically, it blows high for 10 seconds, then medium and then slow.Noise level works for me. I'm old school and grew up with a box fan. I cannot sleep without the sound of a fan. Before buying these I had a fan running all night every night. If it was chilly I just turned so wouldn't blow on me. The noise soothes me to sleep. Downstairs I don't find it to be bothersome either. I work from home and do make phone calls, I can still hear whom I am speaking too and they don't notice the fan, even when on speakerphone. If this goes back on sale I might buy a third for my kitchen, right now using a normal oscillating fan.If you are elderly or have trouble bending over the fact that the water tray is on the bottom might give you issues. It is a bit awkward to drain and clean if you can't get on your knees or squat down.Says it is also a humidifier, haven't used cool function long enough to notice if it will help with dry skin. Crossing fingers on that front as I've been ashy ever since we moved here no mater what moisturiser I use.

I really love this thing
First of all, I was very skeptical because of the poor reviews. I almost didn't make this purchase. But I did and I am glad I did, so I felt a needed to put a positive review in there for potential buyers.First of all, this is nice and slim and compact. Most swamp coolers/evaporative coolers are verrryyy bulky. Swamp coolers might be an older term for it, but that's what evaporative coolers are. Please keep in mind this is NOT an air conditioner. It will not turn a room into an ice box. It is COOL air, not COLD air. It will make it more comfortable than it was. They typically drop a room temp about 10-15 degrees. It is much better than a standard fan, but not at the level of an actual air conditioner.I can tell the difference when I stand in front of this cooler versus a regular fan. It does blow cool air. Big difference. The water storage compartment is huge and can fit nearly a gallon of water. Try to keep cold water in there, cold water with the ice pack given, or add extra ice in there. The colder the water in the tank, the better cool air you are getting. Please also keep in mind on the description it says it cools "up to 100 sq ft". This is a 10 foot by 10 foot room. It still works ok in larger rooms, but if you feel you aren't getting more from it, thats why.I live in a 1000sq ft small house in Oregon. Most houses in Oregon do not have homes with AC. Most of us use fans, open doors, window air conditioners. In my living room I have a window AC and a fan. The evaporative cooler is USUALLY in my daughters room by itself to cool it off, but some days my AC and fan alone can't keep my living room from being an oven. I need more. Once I bring the evap cooler from her room to the living room with some ice cold water in it's tank, the room finally becomes comfortable for us.Evaporative coolers work by humidifying however. You need a dryer climate. IF YOU LIVE IN A PLACE WITH HUMIDITY IT WILL NOT WORK. please don't write a crap review because you thought this was going to work like an AC, or you used it in a humid climate and it didn't work. Look at the weather reports for your town, look at your humidity percentage. Anything under 35% and it will probably work. Under 25%? Even better.Anyways. This guy is helping us survive the summer. Love how I can move it from room to room, whichever needs cooling. Can't do that with an AC.One day my 2 year old had a tantrum and threw it to the side. Please keep this somewhere it can't be knocked over, because the water WILL come out and you'll be looking at about a gallon on your floor. It was not fun to mop it up.Also, if it doesn't work for you, at least the fan option on it is great. Considering it' the price of most fans, you really can't lose. Take the chance, buy this cooler.

Nothing like air conditioning but it really takes the edge off, check humidity levels before buying.
Make sure to check out the evaporative cooler charts found online so that you can determine how functional they will be for your area. You will need to know your area's average humidity, they function well in dry climates but are borderline useless in humid environments. In Calgary it works fairly well, its certainly nothing like air conditioning but it really takes the edge off.The element the water passes through on the back of the unit is metal and cleanable and has a dust filter on the hatch that gives you access to the back of it. I've used it for about a month now and it still hasn't gotten nearly bad enough to require a cleaning. Downside however is that it attaches via some kind of weak feeling snaps and Velcro, it hasn't broken or come loose but it's something that feels like a point of failure down the road. The tank of water is more than enough to make it overnight and beyond, it does have a low level alarm that is quite loud it will almost guaranteed wake you up from a dead sleep so make sure you top it up before bed. It also comes with one ice gel pack, I bought 3 more standard sized ones for a couple bucks to go with it so I can swap them out in pairs. It loses points for three reasons, the first is you can't actually fully remove the reservoir to clean it because of the hoses coming down into it and the pump being inside the reservoir itself and the wires being ran to it. Secondly came home today to find it had started leaking fairly badly from something internal as several other people have reported, I cannot determine where exactly its coming from without disassembling it and voiding the warranty in the process; its an amazon item so they're sending a replacement but its a potential headache should it water damage something in the future. Thirdly it is quite loud as far as tower fans go vs the air output, this could be desirable if you want to have it also be a white noise generator, but otherwise its a bit of an annoyance.EDIT: The replacement unit I received is now leaking in the exact same manor as the first, and the flaps that control the direction of the air coming out now rattle unless it is on at full blast. I cannot recommend this product especially considering many others have ran into the same issue so this doesn't seem to be just a fluke so much as poor design/quality.

107 degree day in the hot BC interior and I think that they just didn't have the umph to cool one bit
I set two of these up in my parents home. 107 degree day in the hot BC interior and I think that they just didn't have the umph to cool one bit. Even though I filled the reservoirs with ice cubes and water. As fans they're great, solid, quiet (on low) but the cooling portion of their capability is overrated. And the "Sleep Mode" and "Nature modes" are ridiculous ! The fans just changes speed randomly making it quite hard TOO sleep.. Just leave the setting at "Fan" and you enjoy a well build product. Just don't expect to get chilly sitting in front of it.Perhaps the next generation of this fan will find a way to run the air through the cooling box before it blows it out. Right now water is just sucked up out of the reservoir and misted out by the fan. Problem is, so little water is misted it doesn't really cool. Still, a very solid fan, but not the poor man's A/C replacement I was hoping for.

If you want cool, keep a scrolling
The fan itself is very powerful. I usually leave it on medium otherwise I have to make sure anything light is weighed down. High fan is a bit noisy but not bad, comes with a remote. I believe the air is a little cooler than normal but honestly I can't really tell. I put ice in the water and rotate ice packs in there too but they melt quickly. It circulates air very well, but I think calling it a cooler is false advertising

Cools well but cheaply made
It seems like it works really well at least when you're sitting fairly close to it. My husband and I use it in our office and have it rotate between us and it helps a lot.Downside is that the base was all cracked and broken when it arrived. The bottom feels like flimsy cheap plastic so I'm not too surprised.
