Effective tool in a compact size
A sharpening stone in a pen-sized package. Rather than the usual method of sharpening a knife against a stone, with this it is the stone that is applied to the knife. The tool is fitted with a pocket clip which would allow it to be available when out camping, trekking etc and when a sharp knife is needed. There is a locking grip which, when loosened, allows the stone to be fully extended. It provides a single grade of sharpening - coarse - but with three different sections. The flat surface is used with all ordinary bladed knives or the normal 'straight' section of a mixed blade. The rounded sections are used within the serrations of some knives and then there is the groove which is used for the peaks of the serrations. There is a YouTube video that may better explain this than a few words, but it is mostly useless padding and only a few seconds that is useful - if you consider showing the action rather than actually sharpening a blade to be useful - but it is better than nothing. If used well, it does precisely what is calimed but, as the grade is rather coarse, you should only need a few strokes to achieve a result. If improperly used, it can blunt a good blade all too easily.

Gerber Diamond Knife Sharpener
A very useful piece of kit which I learnt to appreciate when I visited my Canadian relatives during my Summer "vacation". My sister-in-law kept one of these sharpeners in the back pocket of her jeans when she was working in the garden. Periodically she would take it out and sharpen her secateurs. I couldn't help trying out this item on her kitchen knives. I was impressed by the very sharp edge it gave these knives. When I returned to Edinburgh I had no hesitation in purchasing 2 of these sharpeners from Amazon. I will definitely be buying more in the near future. These sharpeners are very handy and do an excellent job!

poor quality
This product was a complete waste of time and effort. It stripped some of the coating off at the first usage and after a couple of sharpening was stripped of the diamond coating down to the bare steel. As an engineer I know about coatings and how to use tools and this was a complete disappointment.I assume it was a bad batch. I did get a part refund. What I would like is an actual sharpener that worked and stayed working. I have used other brands in the past and they normally give a couple of years working. The coating was far too coarse.Just fell off first using and each trying to use it, more came off. The money was not the problem, a useless sharpener was the real problem.

It's okay, but don't expect miracles
It's really good, especially for kitchen knives and or stainless steel 440/aus/n690 although if you use too much pressure you will see that the thin layer of diamond dust will start to fall from the rod. The round part of it is great for serrated blades. Overall I'm happy with the purchase.

Cheap, short but effective
At 7.5cm long, this sharpener is just about perfect for sharpening the blade on a multi-tool (Leatherman, Gerber etc). Stowing into an aluminium body that looke very much like a pen, it's handy to carry around as well. Twist the locking barrel at the top of the pen body and the sharpening steel slide out ready for action, twist the locking barrel the other way and the steel will stay put while you sharpen. There's only one grade of coarseness on the sharpener and it's quite coarse so only a few strokes are needed to put an edge onto the blade. With no fine grain sharpening you won't get the finesses / finish that you would from dedicated sharpening stones but the sharpness that's achievable is surprising, so be careful.Theres a flat edge and a round body with a "V" notch along the length, which can be used to change profile of the sharpener, but I've found the best results come from sticking to the round side of the steel as it works better with the natural action of sharpening a knife. To summarise, it's a great portable sharpener that you can keep in your shirt-pocket, clibboard, rucksack, car or wherever to put a really nice edge on your penknife. If you're looking to sharpen something bigger than a 6-7cm blade then this probably isn't the tool for you as you'll not get good coverage of the whole blade.

Knife sharpener gives control
I like this Gerber sharpener. It is basically a rod that you can use to fine-tune the sharpening of a blade. I struggle with maintaining a consistent angle using a stone, and its quite nice to be able to have something so easy to hold and work with. I find it easy to keep a consistent angle with this. For smaller edges, I use the excellent Lansky system, but sometimes its more convenient just to grab this and put a couple of strokes down the blade. For general sharpening I mainly use a file, stone or the Lansky system, but this is nice to have, especially if there is a specific area on a blade that needs a bit of work. Glad I bought it.

Worth waiting for.
Over the years I had tried to find an ideal knife sharpener for a sheath knife and various pocket knives. One knife in particular seemed impossible to get a good edge on.I ordered this Gerber diamond sharpener more in hope - than expectation. After the order I had an email saying they had sold out and were awaiting new stock - after a weeks wait this sharpener arrived. This thing is a little miracle.... I'm so impressed.Even the knife that nothing would sharpen is now like a razor...I'm ordering another for a friend - you can't go wrong with this.
