At last, I can pause and rewind live Sky programming on Now TV!
I have just received the new Now TV Smart Box with 4 Month Sky Cinema Pass - this is the third style of Now TV box, after the original small white one, which was followed by the small black one (still current). This is the larger, flatter black box with the turquoise Now TV logo on top - I think it is also what people who sign up to Now TV's Combo service (with broadband) will get. I've had all three box types, as I find Now TV very useful for watching Sky programming, and have an existing Sky Entertainment pass, so I thought I'd treat myself to some movies with this one, for a change. There are some notable physical changes with this model - it's larger, at 16.5 cm square versus the 8.9 cm square of the black Now TV Box (and indeed its white predecessor) but a bit flatter at 20.5mm versus 25mm. Obviously being bigger it's heavier, and it has air vents on the lower edge of each side - there's a cooling fan inside that kicks in when it needs to, which isn't particularly intrusive - I can't hear it when I am 5 feet away. This box gets quite hot when it is in use (probably a bit more so than the small black box), but unlike the small black variant, it goes into a deeper sleep when not in use after some time, so it becomes cool then - the small black box stays noticeably toasty on standby, much more so than the original white one did. I don't know why the small versions differ in temperature, as they both keep the Now TV screensaver running all the time when not in use, whereas the the new Smart Box eventually turns even that off. When deeply asleep, it needs a few extra seconds to get going, of course. This new Smart Box uses an identical remote to the small black box, but it is more responsive to it - the small black box seems to require the remote to be very carefully aimed at it - whereas ike the original white box, the new Smart Box doesn't need that careful aiming. Actually, all three remotes are the same and work all three units; it's just the finish and a couple of button labels that were changed between the white one and the black version.Of course the main claim to fame of the new Smart Box is that it now has a terrestrial TV aerial socket, and can provide Freeview HD programming. I haven't connected the aerial or run a Freeview channel search (it's not compulsory) as all my other equipment has Freeview anyway (including the TV this is connected to) and since the Now TV remote doesn't have number buttons, it's easier for me to use the TV's tuner for Freeview. Aside from this, the Smart Box has all the same connections as the small black Now TV Box (HDMI out, power connector, Micro SD slot, USB socket) and an almost identical operational interface (just the Freeview aspects added, really). As before it comes with batteries for the remote and an HDMI cable (this time marked high speed, with gold connectors, so a bit upgraded from the previous boxes).Given that I'm not using Freeview, you might wonder why I wanted it! Well, it's because of the live pause/rewind feature. When I'm hooked on a particularly good series on Now TV's Sky programming, I often really want to watch it when it's first transmitted, as it frequently takes several hours or more before it becomes available on catchup and with live programmes starting at 9.00 or 10.00, that's frustrating. Of course I could watch live on the previous little Now TV boxes too, but there was no way to pause if I got interrupted by real life. Now there is! A little circular indicator in the centre of the bottom of the screen shows how many minutes you have paused for, with a gauge giving an idea of how much of the buffer is left, and you can rewind and fast forward through the buffered part. Excellent, and just what I wanted! I had worried, after reading some discussions and reviews, that this facility was only available for the Freeview programmes, but thankfully it also works for the Sky ones, so now there's almost the same flexibility as when watching them on catchup or as box sets. I have read that it works on Sky Sport stuff too, such as F1, and see no reason that it wouldn't. Presumably it will on any live broadcast of Sky Cinema too - I'll soon find out!Early days yet, of course, but if it carries on as it started, I am well pleased with this product. I noticed quite a big picture quality improvement between the white original box and the small black box with my setup, and if anything, it seems that there might be a subtle improvement again with the new Smart Box. It does seem nippier in performance, and it's great to have the remote control feeling responsive again. Obviously it's typically a bit dearer than the little black box at present, but still seems good value (and will no doubt be even better due to various Lightning Deals in the future) since, as usual, it costs LESS than the pass that comes with it would do on its own, if it was on my normal continuous subscription!

For the price the NOW TV Smart Box is an absolute bargain but there are some compromises to take into consideration.
The Now TV Smart Box is a very cheap and very simple combination of the Freeview free-to-air channels (BBC, ITV, CH4 etc) along with NOW TV which is Sky's internet based service to access Sky Movies, Entertainment and Sports - both on demand and streaming live. This box cost me £39.99 with a 5 month Sky Entertainment pass. So I took the risk as I thought if the box isn't good at least I get the Entertainment pass, and I can use the box on the bedroom TV. Let me just say the reason I bought this box is because I wanted a combined service of Freeview and Sky on one box so I can more easily flick through all the channels of both. I don't think there is another set-top box that integrates the NOW TV live streaming channels with Freeview. There is a NOW TV app on my Youview box, and a lot Freeview set-top boxes, but only for on-demand viewing. So the NOW TV Smart box does allow me to flick through both services via the use of the TV guide which has one Tab for freeview channels and another Tab for NOWTV live channels. The Freeview and NOW TV channels aren't a continuous list but at least I can switch between Sky Movies and Freeview channels easily. This is something you don't get on Youview. So objective achieved albeit the listing for both services are somewhat separated. As for the rest of the features of the box they are a compromise. This box is not a PVR where you can record channels so to have a 7-day Electronic Programme Guide would a bit redundant in my opinion and I can see why the box hasn't got this. However, there are only Now and Next Programmes in the TV Guide which is a bit limiting but in all honesty I'm getting used to it. A 24-hour EPG would be better, and I hope Sky see fit to introduce this in a future system update. There are pause and rewind features however which work well, so there is some limited PVR functionality. Changing (flicking through) channels is done by the up/down buttons which displays the change of channel in text at the bottom of the screen whilst not actually changing the current channel being viewed - to change channel you need to click OK thereafter. In other words there are no channel up/down buttons directly on the remote and that cannot be added to a universal remote either (such as a Logictech Harmony). It's not big deal though, you do get used to it. One big oversight are the lack of channel numbers - so you cannot enter in a number of a channel to go straight to that channel. Again there are no number buttons on the remote nor on the Logitech Harmony programmable version of the NOW TV remote. You can use fastforward and rewind to quickly skip through the TV Guide by a page at a time which helps speed things up.The NOW TV Smart box is full of third party apps too such as Youtube, Spotify (both of which I use and work fine), BBCi Player, ITV Player, 4OD, 5 On Demand and so many more that I cannot list them all. The User Interface is fast and responsive, clean and slick, and has suggestions for catch-up of popular TV programmes etc. Wifi works well. For the price this box really is a bargain even though there some compromises as discussed above but non of these compromises are deal breakers - although I guess that may depend on the individual. And most importantly I can finally flick through live streaming Sky channels and freeview on the same box. For £40 you really cannot expect more and what is there functionally on this box works well.

Upgrade On A Good Product
Why I Bought It.... I had Sky with multi rooms, internet, calls and sports and it was about £100 a month and wasn't fully using it so went with BT which is half the price and I am more than happy it. But being a football fan I didn't want to miss certain games that aren't on BT so bought a NOW TV box with a 2 day sports pass from my local supermarket at a good price, I don't mind paying for the passes for the day or week depending on what's on.Since giving up Sky I have used my mums ID to watch Sky1 etc programmes on Sky Go but found that half through certain series it would be unavailable which really gave me the hump so I went for a entertainment pass on NOW TV.Since leaving Sky our bedroom TV has been made redundant as we don't have a aerial socket in our bedroom. When I saw the new NOW TV box has a freeview tuner I thought I'd get one and try a indoor aerial and bingo it all works a dream. The Box... It is a lot bigger than the original but very flat and doesn't look out of place. The remote is the same but seems a lot more responsive than the original, the lack of numbers is a slight down point as you have to arrow your way through the freeview menu to find the channel you want. You can also pause and rewind live TV which is a bonus if you need to leave the room. Scanning to tune the freeview took a few minutes and also it supports HD channels(I only have the main 5 channels, might be to do with location) but the streamed Sky channels aren't in HD but they are still very clear and crisp. To End... For me I love the Sky programmes and prefer the box sets compared to Netflix and it is slightly cheaper, I paid £38 for the box and 5 months of entertainment, seems I already have a rolling monthly sub the box cost a couple of pound if you look at it that way, it has also juiced up a redundant TV.
