Still Game - The Complete Series 1-6 Plus Christmas and Hogmanay Specials [DVD] [2002]

A treat from Scotland
Your DVD collection isn't complete without this!I have been an avid fan of Jack & Victor ever since their first appearance on "Chewin' The Fat", from which Still Game was a spin-off. If you have ever seen Hemphill, Ford, Riley or some of the others in real life (like me, though I've met them individually and not as a group) you would really appreciate just how well these guys get into the "old man" character, and the make-up folk do a great job too.As characters, Jack & Victor are just so well put together and episode by episode the characters just get better and better. You find out about Jack's family, you'll find out Victor is a widower, that Winston is a father and grandfather etc. It really is one of those one-in-a-million kind of television shows. I've spoke with fellow Scots who obviously rate the show very highly (trust me on this... not a single Scot dislikes the show!), but the BBC started showing Still Game in England during season 3 and they loved it too, which I really wasn't expecting. But if you hover around the IMDB 'topics' you'll find out that Still Game has actually went global with Canadians, Australians, Chinese & New Zealander's all loving it!Expanding on that, the show is 100% Glaswegian. The accents are strong and there is an awful lot of slang (as well as swearing, but for true Glaswegians that's an everyday language in it's own right) so if you are not from Scotland/Glasgow, be prepared for some confusion. Most of it isnt hard to pick up and others you'll eventually figure out. And that's one of the best things about Still Game... You can watch it over and over again, pick on on new things you didnt before, and you still find it just as funny after watching it the 100th time. It just never gets old! Now, getting away from the show a little bit and onto the product... I used to be an owner of the Seasons 1 to 5 boxset and a single DVD of Season 6. After serving me well though, the boxset has some discs missing and the rest are scratched to the point of being unplayable on a DVD player or even a PC. This boxset also includes two Christmas and Hogmanay specials, all of which are absolute gems and not to be missed.

Best Comedy ever?
Is this the best comedy ever? Well I have watched these episodes over and over and never tire of them. They cheer me up without fail and the first thing I reach for when I need a laugh. I also have boxed sets of Fawlty Towers, Father Ted, Likely Lads, Royle Family and Phoenix Nights, to name a few, but Still Game is the one I reach for most often.Even better than Frasier? it's a different sort of comedy but I think it is at least as funny as early Frasier. You don't need to be Scottish to enjoy these, some of the language can be a bit confusing at first but you soon pick it up and to be honest I find different dialects very colourful. 'Gettin' yer hole' - makes me laugh every time they say it!The tragedy is that BBC2 in England only showed the later series, and repeats are as rare as hen's teeth. They can show Dad's Army at prime time on Saturday nights for year after year after year, but this gem never gets a look in. (I'm not knocking Dad's Army, but when you have seen every episode at least 10 times it starts to wear a bit thin). This is the programme Last of the Summer Wine could have been, if it hadn't become the Howard and Marina Show and repeated the same old situations ad nauseum. Every episode of Still Game is a gem.

Great British Sit Com Box Set
As soon as these arrived sat down and watched then fro beginning to end, lovely dry humour, the interplay between the 2 main characters is great. Picture quality is not up to modern HD standard, (makes you realise how far TV picture quality has come in the last few years), but that actually adds to the atmosphere of the programme. Some of the scenes are achingly funny such as when the 2 main characters watch an icy pavement from their flat as pedestrians slip on the ice (may not sound funny here but when watching it it is brilliantly funny). Love this anyone who likes traditional British sitcoms should love this set. There is also some nice pathos in the programmes as the characters come to realise that they are all coming towards the twilight of their lives and there is actually some valid social comment in the scripts, when Winston helps the community slow down their electric meters and the moral struggle of whether to allow themselves to become part of the scam is really well, Strange that of all the comedies BBC has sold to Gold this one has not appeared, I am certain that if re-run it would be very popular, but if not re-run anywhere this box set for the entertainment contained in it is great value for money.

Brilliant.
These guys are brilliant and this is one of the best box sets I've bought in a long while. I'm amazed I haven't heard of it before now. It's kind of a cross between Only fools and horses and Last of the summer wine, and set in a made up Scottish version of Peckham called Craiglang. The character really do grow on you, with the central pair being a couple of pensioners called Jack and Victor, but with a close network of other characters, who each add a lot to the storylines. It may take a wee (:-)) while to get tuned in to the fairly broad Scottish accents and some of the phrases and terminology but once you do it's a really great and funny show. I'm from Yorkshire and I really did get into it quite quickly. There is quite a bit of swearing in it and sometimes it can be quite rude, so not really one for the young ones like Only fools and Last of the Summer wine though, just to be clear. For everyone else, I'd be surprised if you didn't love it.I would have no hesitation recommending this to anyone who likes a good laugh, and this box set is great value with all 6 series on separate discs and one with the Hogmanay and Xmas specials.

Beste Comedyserie!!!

Watch this now! And be ready for its return in 2016!
Stumbled across this series on Netflix. Best show of the 21st century! Absolutely hilarious!Still Game has introduced me into the world of Scottish humor. I couldn't love it more! They don't hold back like American sitcoms do. Lots of "insult humor," the kind guys throw at each other (friendly but unmerciful). These old pensioners don't avoid sensitive topics regarding old age--everything from urinary problems to freezing to death is fair game for these guys. That's not to say these characters are unlikable, they're downright lovable.Jack and Victor = two life-long pals sharing retirement and a lot of "pints" at the pub!Winston = Tough-minded, streetwise friend; loves gambling and a good prank.Isa = Good-hearted gossip; knows your business better than you do!Tam = Scheming tightwad; unashamedly selfish. Has he ever paid for his own pint?Navid = Indian shopkeeper; provides wisdom and advice, when he's not taking guff from his wife.Bobby = Loser bartender; victim of much abuse!I was drawn in by the raucous humor of the guys, but I'm hooked on learning the language. I love figuring out all the sayings. If I don't get it by context, I Google the phrase. There are plenty of sites that will help with understanding it all. Example: look up "boaby" and you'll get the first bar joke of the first episode!Warning 1: It takes time to figure out what they're saying. Scots roll their "r"s hard, so it takes getting used to. Plus, they have lots of slang we don't use. You might need to Google some of the phrases to catch all the meaning.Warning 2: This comedy relies heavily on "swear words." Don't watch it with the kiddies in the room!I have honestly watched every episode of every season at least 4 times (some I've watched twice as much). I catch new words every time.I only give this series 5 stars because I can't give it 10! Get it bought! Get it watched!

Show has NINE seasons
Give your ear 1 or 2 episodes to tune into the accent. You'll be glad you did! This is an excellent and hilarious series about pensioners in an area that has gone to the dogs as they've aged. Strong characters with great story lines ensures interesting episodes. I honestly wish that there was the possibility of more seasons.I returned this box set, but only because it has 6 and not 9 seasons. I reordered the full set of 9 seasons from the same seller.
