Not fun. Not fun at all.
The part that connects to the engine is a bitch to remove and replace, that would be for any brand though. My big complaint with this is the plastic tube on the helm gear box. The cable side snapped in place fine but the plastic tube side comes back out after you snap it in. I would definitely had a mechanic do this for me, but my boat is over 20 yrs old and the shops around here won't touch it. I did manage to get it done though, hopefully never again.

I decided to upgrade to a rotary helm after reading about the benefits and chose this product/ Installation was easy as can be
My boat steering was very stiff, so stiff that the power assist would not even work. The boat is a Sea Ray 250 Sundancer with a 260 Mercruiser. The original rack style steering cable lasted since 1987. I decided to upgrade to a rotary helm after reading about the benefits and chose this product/ Installation was easy as can be! I could not get my old cable out due to the routing of it. I had to cut it! I taped a rope to the cable and pulled the cable out leaving the rope in place f the cable. I then taped the rope to the new cable and pulled it right into place. The new rotary help takes up far less space than the rack style system. The only downfall was my old steering wheel was a 4 point mount and the new stem was a 3/4 keyed style. O well, I just upgraded my steering wheel too. The system performs excellent!! Its amazing how much better the boat drives.

90HP Yamaha on a Boston Whaler
The media could not be loaded. Very easy to install. I did have to modify the dash for the wheel bracket slightly enlarge circular hole. This unit was a dream come through. Finally a peace of gear that someone designed well.Installing cable and steering wheel is best accomplished with 2 people. Always run a leader when removing the old cable.I would recommend the kit. Inexpensive when it comes to typical boat parts.

Some Mods for 91 Tracker
I replaced an old Morse rotary helm in my 1991 Bass Tracker Pro 17. The product didn't come with the helm mounting bracket. Not sure if it was supposed to. It's the brass plate in the picture with the holes in it. The hole pattern was different for the Morse, so I had to modify the old bracket by drilling some new holes. The helm unit case itself is a bit different than the Morse in that the casing 'tower' around the steering post that the mounting holes are in isn't as tall. I didn't have sufficient clearance behind my dash to mount the helm because it mounted too close to the irregular surface. I got around this by purchasing some steel cylinder spacers that went between the underside of the mounting bracket and the helm on the mounting screws. This gave me more of a 'setback' for clearance. Only needed about 1/2 inch spacers, and had to buy 1/2 inch longer mounting screws so they would reach from the bracket to the helm with the spacers in. Also, the steering post on this unit is smaller than the original. Morse was 5/8. I brought home a 9/16 18 fine thread today and it was still too big. Still looking. Did not get a nut with the unit. Old steering wheel still fits since the post is tapered. As others have noted, just a little filing made the steering wheel key fit in the slot. That's kind of normal for a good snug fit.

Had to modify bezel and other hardware
I installed on my 1990 bass tracker as a replacment to the old morse system. The helm tower was shorter causing the helm to not sit flush under my dash I had to go out and buy new 1/4 × 1/34 hardware and 1 inch metal spacers so it would sit lower under the dash . Then I had to cut my bezel to a inch and a eigth on order to get the steering wheel on because the steering shaft was now a inch shorter. Works excellent after the modifications. Would rate 5 stars if they included the hardware I actually needed

Very nice steering system kit
High quality steering kit. Great instructions and was able to convert my 1969 Larson boat from the old style and problematic pulley steering to the updated single cable steering. Boat steers great and much tighter turning radius with a lot less revolutions ofv the wheel!
