Amazing sweets, but a ridiculous price
Well, the first thing you have to say about Tooty Frooties is that they are very tooty and very fruity.Actually, strike that, for two reasons:1) I don't know what Tooty means. It could be something very rude, or something slightly twee, and either way I don't want to be seen endorsing it;2) It makes me sound like that David Haig character from The Thin Blue Line.Any line that sounds like it may have been written by Ben Elton post 1989 should be automatically scrubbed from existence.Back to the Tooty Frooties. What they are, right, is small square sweets, with a hard shell and a chewy centre.Fruit-flavoured, according to their packaging, but as with all sweets of that nature it really is hard to pin down exactly which fruits they taste like it.Nevertheless, they are tasty, and I love them. And I'm not alone.Since Tooty Frooties were introduced in 1963, they have influenced popular culture like few other foodstuffs. You want some examples?I'll give you examples.I'll give you so many examples you'll have them coming out of your ears.I'll give you so many examples you'll be eating Tooty Frooties for every breakfast, lunch, and dinner for the next 30 weeks (but only if you really, really ration them out).Try this for starters:The 1987 BBC Scotland comedy drama Tooty Frooty was inspired by a packet of Tooty Frooties. How?The writer John Byrne was out for lunch with his wife Tilda Swinton and their good friend Emma Thompson, still basking in the glow from her recent Oscar winning turn in Michael Winner's Love Actually.Having enjoyed scallops, pickled herrings, and a quarter pound of seared sea bass, the trio were quaffing their fifth bottle of champagne of the afternoon when Thompson, then married to Hugh Laurie, challenged Byrne to write a TV series based on the first item she produced at random from her handbag.Byrne groggily acquiesced to her plan, and, upon sighting the half-eaten pack of Rowntree's Tooty Frooties recovered from said handbag, he snorted with delight, for they were his favourite sweets. The show would go on to win 18 Baftas, 6 Emmys, 5 Golden Roses of Montreaux, plus a Grammy for Best Original Soundtrack for the soundtrack by Jimmy Nail off Auf Wiedersen, Pet.The show in turn would inspire Little Richard to compose his best known song: Tooti Frutti (note the Americanisation of the original title). But that track does not hold a candle to the Tooty Fruity tune recorded by noted Rowntree's fanatics New Order.Written at the height of their sugar rush, Balearic Beats period, Tooty Fruity is a song of slamming thumps, big choruses, and wonderful, wonderful mentions of Tooty Frooties. It makes you want to devour ten thousand packets of Tooty Frooties right then and there. It's just a great song about an amazing product!Such a great song, in fact, that it has been covered by artists as diverse as Ms Dynamite, Johnny Mathis, Lady Gaga, and Sting. How's that for cultural influence?Tooty Frooties remain a central part of your mind's landscape, whether you like them or not.Which of course you do; you love them. You love them! But you hate the price.

Not Like Originals!
Not the same as the originals confirmed by many friends and family. The grape flavour is not nice and overwhelming. The greens and oranges are good but ruined by the overuse of grape flavour. I won't be repurchasing and instead will be sticking with Fruittella Pixels which taste more like Tooty Frooties than Tooty Frooties taste like Tooty Frooties...Disappointed :-(
