So far so good!
I've had my drobo 5D quite some time now. I absolutely love it. I've even bought a second 5D about a year ago and have not had a single problem with either.I've put off buying a drobo for YEARS. I thought they were too expensive and too unreliable. They have received some really bad reviews in the past which is a shame because the idea is brilliant. They are VERY practical if you have lots of HD's lying around that you'd like to make a RAID with. But it doesn't require that you use the same disks or have any knowledge of how to built a RAID.The other options I went for in the meantime was a Synology Discstation. This is a BRILLIANT server and, whilst it requires a bit of research to get you up to speed it works in much the same way as a drobo, but it's a lot cheaper. The problem for me was the speed. I'm not particularly techie, and I failed to get the speeds I need to work.Secondly I bought a G-Speed Q. Nice bit of gear. Took AGES to set it up from buying the cheap case on eBay and then installing my own 4 x 2TB disks. It works okay and is quite fast on e-data, but it is SO noisy and there's not all that much scope to upgrade the available space.I then bought an 8TB G-RAID thunderbolt. Brilliant bit of kit, but if one of the two disks fails then you lose it all and for my working drive I'd prefer having the peace of mind of a RAID-5 setup.So... after reading quite a few reviews about the latest drobo 5D I decided to go for it. I had the budget, couldn't find anything else like the drobo that had thunderbolt and convinced myself that, although it was expensive it was a good long term solution!Unfortunately the first drobo I received had a faulty power pack. I notified the company of this through Amazon and received a new one the next day. These things can happen I guess, but was really impressed by their customer service. I tested the first drobo I received with the new power brick and it worked ok. Even so it got returned and I used the second drobo I received. It was easy to setup.I bought the 64GB SSD to speed it up and I have no complaints about speed or noise. I am actually surprised to hear complaints about noise - maybe the HD's are noisy? There is a very gentle hum from the fan, but it's sat right next to my iMac and it's virtually silent when idle. FAR less intrusive than my G-Speed Q.And lastly... I tested it. When the drobo was on, and was 1/4 full of data I pulled out a disk. Warning lights came on. I then tuned it off and on again. Inserted a new drive and it rebuilt itself in about 2 hours. Phew!It is a bit pricey, but see it as a long term investment. If you have a lot of data and you want it in one place there aren't really too many other alternatives.

It is a good product, but you'll have to pay though the nose for support
I have had several months of trouble-free operation with the Drobo 5D and probably a week ago, would have given it 4 stars, the only complaint I had was that it was a little slow accessing files if you had not for a few hours, however once it had woken up, using the USB3 connection, it was very fast. It is also a nice looking and compact little deviceThe trouble with this product is that if you run into problems (for me, I can't get the disks to mount rendering 8TB of data inaccessible), you will get no help from technical support unless you spend $169/year (currently just over £100) on their technical support package.I initially contacted them with my problem and got a very speedy response telling me it was likely one of the disks and I needed to buy DroboCare if I needed any help and then how to generate a report log from the Drobo to send to them when I had purchased DroboCaresOnlyAboutProfit. I generated the log file which is encrypted to prevent you from troubleshooting your own device and forcing you to buy their DroboCare product if you want any information about the problem.I then wrote back to technical support, explaining that DroboCare would stretch my budget and asking a couple of questions about the type of information they can generate from these reports, nothing that would help me troubleshoot, in order to help with my decision whether to purchase DroboCare or not and I have been ignored, presumably until I buy their support package. So in summary, I could not recommend this device, not because the product is particularly bad, it isn't, but because Data Robotics seem to view their customers with complete contempt and simply as an excuse to generate more revenue once they run into problems with their device, because of the encrypted log files I have no choice but to purchase DroboCare. But I can be assured I will never buy another Drobo again.

Drobo
A recommander

Hammer!
