Anyone with cats? Do they scratch on this more than other rugs? I worry about the stitching coming apart.

I haven't got cats only dogs but it might come apart if a cat continuously scratched on it. I've had one of my dogs chew the threads and caused a hole so....but generally are a good hardy rug.

I have only machine washed the smaller ones from this particular manufacturer (my washing machine isn't big enough for this one) but in general, yes, woven Scandinavian-style cotton rugs are very washing machine friendly (with the exception of the vertical axis machines common in some countries! but this is Amazon.co.uk so I'm presuming you are talking about a front-loaded machine).  Just remember to put it on "delicate" or similar program that has a low spin (or no spin) at the end and remember it will need a couple of days to dry even during warm weather and they will drip water after wash as you can't spin them too hard so plan the place where you will dry it beforehand.  To dry them never ever hang them so the colourful weave stripes are horizontal, always VERTICAL lines so they hang sort of sideways if that makes sense.  They are very heavy with water after wash, hanging them with stripes horizontal stretches the threads out of place, think of like drying a woolen knitted sweater.  For example broomsticks and long planks suspended between garden chairs works well in my experience for the really big rugs.   Do NOT tumble dry.  Rag rugs like these are the most common type of rug up in the Nordics where I grew up, they are washed either in the washing machine or the big ones outside with the hose (you can even use a pressure washer, they don't mind!) or in the summer in a lake or a river (many towns provide piers especially made for rug-washing).  Use mild detergent and always be aware that if you have a rug with many colours there is a chance some colours may run depending on the fabric rags used in the making of it.  Especially with these made from textile industry leftovers there are no guarantees what will happen.  If yours is too big for washing machine then spread out a clean plastic sheet outside (we use camping undersheet but any tarpaulin sort of thing would work) and use a pressure washer/garden hose and mild eco-friendly detergent.  Wet the rug thoroughly, spread the detergent evenly on it (I find small scrubbing brush works best), let it work for a few minutes and then hose down until water runs clear.  Repeat process on the other side of the rug if necessary.  We have rugs at home that are over fifty years old that are still washed in this manner every summer and still look great.
