Product Description Highlights of some of the funniest moments from the popular BBC sitcom. In 'The Day the Balloon Went Up', the platoon have to retrieve a stray barrage balloon. 'Sons of the Sea' sees Mainwaring attempting to create a river patrol, while in 'The Two and a Half Feathers', new recruit George Clark accuses Jones of desertion in the Sudan years earlier. In 'Asleep in the Deep', attempts to rescue Privates Walker and Godfrey from the bombed pumping station endanger the whole platoon, and in 'The Deadly Attachment', a German U-boat crew is captured by the Home Guard. .co.uk Review Five fine episodes of the evergreen Home Guard sitcom here. Dad's Army endures because it combines a healthy dollop of self-mockery with a sense of pride in Britain's lonely defiance against Hitler's might in 1940, encapsulated in the pompous and incompetent yet courageous Captain Mainwaring. Arthur Lowe is sublime in this role. Though he generally acts as a foil to his flippant platoon of funny stereotypes (Walker, Frazier, Godfrey, etc.), his subtle double-takes and apoplectic facial expressions of exasperation are endlessly hilarious. Corporal Jones' doddery recklessness can generally be relied upon to culminate in a finale involving trousers, cries of "Don't panic!" and chases across country but the masterstroke of this series was the casting against type of John Le Mesurier as the vague, aristocratic Sergeant and Lowe as his military but not social superior. These episodes include "The Day The Balloon Went Up" (a typically frantic caper involving a stray barrage balloon), "The Two And A Half Feathers" (including a wonderful Jonesy flashback to his days in the Sudan) and "The Deadly Attachment", in which Pike cheeks the captain of a captive U-Boat crew, who demands his name to add to his "list" of insolent Englanders. "Don't tell him, Pike!" urges Mainwaring. --David Stubbs

50th anniversary blu ray Dads Army the Movie
This is a review for the 50th anniversary Blu Ray of Dad's Army The Movie from Mediumrare. So what do you get?A one disc release containing the movie and special features.A reversible sleeve with alternate artwork.A slipcase.A 32 page collectors booklet. The disc first then. The picture and audio are sublime, they really have done a great job restoring this. There is zero grain and the picture is rich. Hats off to medium-rare. The running time is 95 minutes, which is 5 minutes longer than my previous Dvd release, so interested to see what those additional scenes are.The special features. I have to admit for a 50th anniversary edition this is a little thin, I was expecting a lot more and can't help being left feeling a little deflated and let down. You get 2 home guard news reals totalling just under 4 minutes and a trailer. I'll be honest it just feels lazy, there's so much Mediumrare could have done here. The reversible sleeve is OK, as is the slipcase.Th collectors booklet is glossy but flimsy. However it is interesting and full of all the information that should have been in the special features. All in all its an average release at best and I took a star off for the lack of special features. That said, credit where its due, it is a wonderful picture and it's great to see this film so lovingly restored to how it should look.

not a patch on the TV series
This is a review of the blu-ray movie version of Dad's Army made in 1971 (for some reason the Amazon reviews also have reviews for compilations of BBC TV episodes).I'm a massive fan of the TV series but the movie version doesn't add anything and a lot of the scenes have been taken directly from TV episodes. This is partly understandable since at the time (1971) many people had missed the first episodes and there were no video recorders or regular repeats. It's nice that the whole thing is shot on film (not the video in the studio / film on location type shooting that was common in British TV at the time) although I wonder how much it would have cost to have the "germans" actually speaking german to each other instead of English with a funny accent (did people in the 70's really think that was sensible??).The subtitles are full of mistakes as if written by a non English speaker (Pike has a CARVING knife on his broom handle, not a CARBON knife). The booklet with the disk also has several grammar mistakes such as "creating something to promote the this has all the hallmarks" which make it a bit hard to followI like the movie version of On The Buses and Man About the House but this movie version of a 70's TV series is instantly forgettable.

DAD@S ARMY BLURAY from MEDIUM RARE (50th Anniv. Edition)
Whenever I watch this film with the wonderful original cast...I end up disapointed. I think it's me, because basically there is nothing wrong with the way the film is written/directed, and acted. It just feels wrong, and only occasionally did it raise a chuckle (it involves a horse!). It makes me a bit sad, and I can't find anyone to really criticise, but watching any episode of the TV series is STILL a pleasure (even doddery/daft Corp Jones). So...4 stars...good quality transfer, sound and subtitles and some extras listed here. Sadly I can't help but feel the film lost the "Dad's Army" charm even though the principal actors are all on top form. (Pity there wasn't enough time to feature Bill Pertwee and the vicar, and ,nothing at all against Liz Fraser...but why?)

Great To See It On Blu Ray
Its Great Film To Watch Also its Nice to See It On Blu Ray For The First Time The Only Problem Was that my copy had crease marks on the spine of the art work and the slip cover. The Picture is a lot better than dvd but i would wait for the price to come down because i don't think it's worth £14.99 for a old film.

A Superb Blu-Ray at Last
Well pleased with this Dads Army Blu-Ray. In my opinion the transfer to Blu-Ray has worked and the colours are pin point considering the age of the film. Well pleased with this purchase. Thank you

Dad's Army - still makes me laugh
What can I say about Dad's Army that hasn't already been said? It never fails to make me laugh and I especially like the way the members of the cast relate to each other and recreate their roles effortlessly time after time. I would also like to mention the service - the DVD arrived neatly packaged less than 24 hours after the order was placed.

Great selection of episodes !
You can tell that these episodes were recorded on BBC broadcast video so you have to accept the average picture quality which results. The acting from the whole cast is an absolute joy and you can tell that they were enjoying themselves which adds so much to the subtle humour.
