These systems produce indicators known as diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) internally, usually indicating something out of the ordinary by illuminating the "check engine"/malfunction indicator light (MIL) on the dashboard of your car. In the 1990s these systems, codes and the hardware connectors used to access them were standardized in North America as OBD (onboard diagnostics) and later OBD-II. Europe uses the equivalent EOBD, but Volkswagen and Audi vehicles also use another diagnostic standard system, VAG. Unofficially this acronym can be taken to stand for "Volkswagen Audi Group." Everything you need for basic automotive diagnostic code reading for Volkswagen and Audis. View larger. The Roadi RDT45 VAG basic diagnostic scan tool is specially designed to work with most Volkswagen and Audis sold worldwide beginning in 1990. If your VW/AUDI model has a 16-pin OBD-II style Data Link Connector(DTC), the RDT45 code reader will certainly work. If it has an old-style 2x2 Data Link Connector (DTC), then it depends on whether there are 4 or 3 wires connecting to the pins. If there are 4 wires, each connecting a pin, then it will work. If there are only 3 wires, leaving one pin disconnected, then it will not. To use, simply plug the RDT45 code reader cable connector into the corresponding data port in your vehicle, usually located near the dashboard or gearshift, while the engine is off. Then switch the ignition on and scroll to the right menu option users can gain access to generic and vehicle specific VAG and OBD-II codes related primarily to the engine, transmission, airbag and ABS systems that trigger MIL events. Definitions for the DTCs can be found in your manual or via the CD definitions lists in on the CD included. Additional features include a USB cable for updating your computer-based definitions list and a nylon carrying case. My first product return, and a deserved 1 star
This is the first product I had to return to Amazon, and it really earned its 1-star review. As a rule, I don't read 1-star reviews as most of them seem to be over-reactions.I bought the Unit for a newer Jetta TDI with a check engine light and flashing glow plug (in my case as with many others, exhaust heat or pressure sensor, I later disovered). This unit is specifically for VW/AUDI and supports CAN. It connected easily and appeared to work, but repeated responded "no code". It could clear the check engine (until the problem would cause a code again, of course), and would chime the beeper on air bag test... but still no codes.Had I read 1-star reviews, I would have discovered this problem has happened to others. A manufacturing defect in some units maybe? That would probably push me into a 2-star rating. However, they do have tech support. I called on 4 different days over 6-7 days, in and out of business hours, only to go to voice mail. I left a message for call back as indicated, but none was to this day some 2 weeks later. And that my friends, pushes them into 1-star.Based on the other reviews, I went with the Innov brand (they borrowed one and it returned the code while Roadi still failed). In my case, I splurged (its my birthday) and go the INNOVA 3120, though I feel confident a "lesser" model would have worked. Low and behold, Roadi says no code but Innova returned it first try.I can't even say Roadi was that much of a value over the other brands, so I would recommend you try something else until the company can produce a functional unit AND provide the tech support they promise!(did you really read this whole thing?)

For the price if you own a VAG product it's the best
If you have a volkswagen or audi you need to own one of these.I bought this because my wife when we first got together owned a 2003 VW beetle. A terrible car, plagued with all sorts of issues as is common of V-A-G products. That car had so many lights on the dash she thought it was perfectly normal for cars to have lights on and off periodically (sadly she's not the first german car owner I've heard say this). Airbag lights, ABS lights, all manner of lights specific to them which a normal OBD2 scanner can't detect or deal with, this little device can.My major gripes is it's so basic it requires the little book to go with it for deciphering it's use, if you lose it you can google the codes and that usually works ok. it's also kinda slow and the cord is short. But it's also cheap, and it works, and it has kept working. I have since sold that horrible car and put her in a japanese car (no lights on hooray!), but I keep the scanner in my other vehicles because it's small enough to easily fit in a glovebox and does function as an OBD2 scanner.

Garbage
Don't waste your money. The concept is a good one. Knowing what the error code is before having your car serviced it a great idea and may save you from getting taken advantage of. I researched this device before buying it to make sure it worked for my 2007 VW. Not all are compatible with all cars. It states that it does work on VW so I bought it for when I may need it. I have unfortunately gotten an error message and my car show signs of needing service so I was happy to know that I had this device and might be able to detect the problem. I plugged it in and got an error message. I kept trying it and got the same error message. I wasted money on this product. Since I bought this a while ago I cannot return it. Buyer BEWARE!!!

saved me time and money
Took my 1998 VW beetle to the garage, they charged me $88 to read the code then another $750 to do some repair work. Two weeks later the engine light came back on. This little reader and an internet search showed that the code is intermittent on these cars. Clearing it got it through the CA smog check and it hasn't come back on since. Also, the CA smog check caused the ABS light to come on (front wheels rolling, back wheels not) and the reader was able to identify that and clear the code for me turning the light off (and that one hasn't come back either).Simple to use, works well.

Worked, reluctantly, on only one of two Audis tested
I connected the Roadi first to a 2002 A6. It did not give any readings after the first few tries, and the written instructions are not accurate and so did not help in getting it working, but there are only two buttons on the device, so after trying several different combinations of pushing and holding buttons and repeating button pushes, it finally worked. But the Roadi never worked on a 2010 A4: it produced only error messages. I do not know if the design is faulty or if this particular unit was faulty, but I returned the Roadi and purchased instead an Actron CP9125. It worked fine the first time on both Audis. The written instructions are clear and accurate.

Saved $40
I had to repair my vw and in doing so I needed to remove the drivers airbag which when I reassembled the steering column I got the srs light. The dealer charges $95 to read and clear the srs codes. I bought this little unit specifically to clear the srs code. I have another code scanner that cost about 6 times as much as the RDT45 but it can't see the abs codes or the srs codes or even the transmission codes. The RDT45 works great for reading all the codes you might get with your VW or Audi. You just can't see any realtime data with the engine running.

Complements your existing OBD reader
The only way to clear safety codes like the airbag code from your VW. A must alongside your existing OBD code reader.

Barely does the job
If you are a tinkerer, you can make it work cheaply. The manual is at best incomplete. Instructions require guesswork. All codes are not available. The installed software does not get up to date information. Despite saying it covers VWs, it seems to be documented for Audis. However, with a little bit of guesswork, I managed to operate it and diagnose my car. I had to go to the internet for one of the codes.
