Inspiring True Story
Fr. Arseny was the ultimate humble, loving Orthodox Christian. Although a large part of his life was spent in a Russian gulag, he treated every fellow prisoner and prison official with love and peace. An inspirational role model! Loved the book!!

My Audio Book was *ABRIDGED*
I first encountered the book in the audio format. It was excellent! The only drawback, as I experienced it, was the accent of Vera Bouteneff (who reads half the chapters). Her Russian accent sometimes made it a just a bit difficult to understand a word or two, but never sacrificing my overall understanding of so much as a paragraph. A year after first listening to the audio book, I was given a copy of the paperback, and lo and behold: the print book is about 50% longer than the audio version! And the audio book packaging says nothing about being a shortened version. Overall, both versions are excellent. Just be warned -- unless the audio book is being released in a new version -- the audio book is missing about the last third of the book. It is *not* unabridged as advertised.

Father Arseny - Priest Prisoner
I'm speechless after reading this book. I don't know that I have ever read a book that reflected such a life in constant peril serving people unwavering. Reading this book will challenge the very core of your spiritual being. You can't just walk away from this book the same person. Father Arseny was just a humble man who knew how to pray, and all he had was prayer. I read the Kindle edition and could not stop reading it.

Wish this was still in print to share
This book touched, inspired, encouraged, and humbled me. The individual recollections of those whose lives he intersected with were also very uplifting.

This was an inspiring book about faith in the midst of horrible oppression. It really made me appreciate the strength of interior prayer and how you might be put into situations in your life that are horrible, but NO ONE can take your mind, and NO ONE can take you away from love of God. NO ONE. Not even in such dire situations like the evil that befalls the world. This book was recommended by a Monk friend of mine to read.

A truly inspiring and faith enhancing book
I first read this book many years ago, having wandered away from faith. It left a significant impression on me at the time. Now, as a believer, I felt God led me to read it again. It is so personally challenging and faith-building. Father Arseny is one of the true faithful apostles of Jesus Christ, and his story as as relevant to us today as it was a hundred years ago while he was ministering to people. This book should be read, not just once, but many times.

Inspiring stories
I love this book, and also its sequel, Father Arseny: A Cloud of Witnesses. The example of this priest is truly humbling, as is the care he shows for his spiritual children. The life of this priest, who spent much time in labour camps during the Soviet regime, is followed by the no less inspiring stories of his spiritual children, and it is almost this part that I enjoyed more, how various individuals, priests and laypeople with Father Arseny as their common denominator, lived out their faith. Truly astounding, and one of the most rewarding books I have read.
