How does this compare to the color muse? it seems like both devices do the same thing, but color muse is half the price with better reviews.

My sales rep at KM uses a Muse and I needed an exact color match done for cabinets. He scanned a door I brought in and I got an exact color match and color name, bought the paint and finished the job. I decided to go ahead and buy a Nix 2 and I scanned one wall and each time would get a different set of color matches. I even scanned colors I had already known the names of. FOr example, I scanned a sample of KM Swiss coffee, probably one of the most common white's used in homes today. The Nix 2 results were ridiculously off, it gave me a set of grey colors instead. Recently I had an interior and used the nix to try and get a color match to a wall in the customers home, luckily he knew it was a Behr color he had used, so I scanned the wall and had it compare it to the Behr color decks only. I scanned the wall in several spots and got wildly different results. We even thought that maybe since it was a textured wall, maybe there was some light creeping in and changing the results. So we completely taped up and sealed this thing to the wall, then even put a coffee mug over the Nix 2 that we essentially duct taped (ok just masking tape) to the wall to prevent any outside light from contaminating the results. After multiple scans we still couldn't get any consistent colors. I wish I would have bought the muse instead but I figured if it cost more it must be better. Boy was I wrong, my KM sales rep got a dead on match for those cabinets after just one scan, I even found the can the previous painters had used stashed in the garage and it was the same color name and company that the Muse told us it was, sweet confirmation. The only time the Nix 2 was useful was when I had a customer who wanted to paint her cabinets the same color as the fabric on her couch. I'm sure it wasn't an exact match to the color of her couch but it got us close. Other than that, this thing has been useless and I was about to start the return process but missed the window by 8 days. I'll sell you a Nix 2 for 20% off =p, or trade for the Muse.

Is this a spectrophotometer, or merely a RGB sensor with a high color index light source?

Nix Mini is not a spectrophotometer – it is a colorimeter and therefore does not collect spectral data. Each device has a purpose of its own and ultimately depends on what the task at hand is. Will it recognize automotive paint?

It might recognize the color, but probably not the brand. You better check it at the company that makes it; for the more expensive model they have more color libraries I think...

Does this work with Dupont/Metallux?
