Works though app is a pill at times
Ok, so I have the base unit that came with 2 satellites, and have since added 3 more satellites to this system to cover the whole physical plant of our church. This provides us with a seamless mesh network covering approximately 20,000 square feet, two stories, and in various rooms. We are able to use it for data connections to upload and download video simultaneously.Setup was mostly easy, though the mobile app is occasionally a pain. Any firmware updates require the system to restart, which is normal, but then the app errors out during the restart because it has lost connection, and so forth...The key to setup and any updates/changes is to be patient with it. You may need to set the system in place, link the first few satellites, go to lunch and let it catch up, and then come back and do the next ring of your system.Overall, I'm very pleased with the Orbi Mesh. We're able to run 4 different network IDs at once, password-protecting 3 of them and using one as an open network, all with bandwidth percentage allotments.

Great Product, but Pricey.
Great product with great range and coverage. The only problem is that it is relatively expensive and each individual device has limited range. I would recommend at minimum getting the 2 satellite pack, 4 if you have an extremely large area (around 5k sq ft). If the 2 satellite pack (+ router) is more than you need, you're probably better off getting a single high powered router instead. However, when you do have enough satellites to cover the whole area (distance between router and satellites should be relatively short), the mesh network works amazingly well. Also, the phone app is great for the initial setup, but the router web page should be used instead to adjust all the settings after the router is setup. There are a lot more options on the webpage such as setting up the network on two different bands and SSIDs (2.4GHz and 5 GHz), instead of a single network/SSID where Orbi automatically determines the frequency.Overall, it's a great, yet pricey product if you have a lot of area to cover.

EXCELLENT wi-fi mesh system
This is an EXCELLENT wi-fi mesh system for home or business. The web-based setup is identical to other Netgear routers. Easy to use and has most or all of the options that most people will want. (I only use the web-based interface to setup my wi-fi routers, because I like doing it without sending any info to Netgear. So I don't have any insight on the mobile setup app.)I really like the ability to setup three different wi-fi networks with this system. One is the "admin" network, which is a wi-fi network that has access to all network devices (just like most basic wi-fi routers). The second is an "employee" network, which is essentially a guest network (which is the way I use it) -- devices attached to this network do not have access to any other devices on the network, even though they are in the same IP segment. The third is a true guest network, with the ability to set time limits on the connection and other guest-related settings. The range and performance are both top-notch. I have used a ton of different wi-fi routers, and this is among the best in both categories. Really stellar. The units are identical in appearance to each other, and very unobtrusive. The set comes with three sets of brackets in case you want to hang any of them from the wall or ceiling.Naturally, the system is a little more complicated to setup than a single router, but well worth the hour or two you might spend coming up to speed on it. For firmware updates, the system will automatically check and update the main unit and each of the satellites at the same time (on one page of the web-based UI).Highly recommended!

The Good: - Wifi performance and range -- this is ...
I had very high hopes for Orbi, but unfortunately, it did not live up to the price or my expectations. Given the extra SSID and hope for extra features in the Pro line, I paid extra for an Orbi Pro 1 Router 2 Satellite package on Prime Day special. The Good:- Wifi performance and range -- this is why it gets such great reviews especially when deployed in a very simple configuration or just for pure speed testingThe Bad:- Lots -- read on if you're questioning the price point or need a multiple SSID/VLAN network configuration.---Note that I run a complicated network full of Cisco routers, switches, firewalls, and access points. In this project, I was looking to decommission my enterprise setup and "go consumer". I knew I was likely to hit obstacles and things I couldn't accomplish with consumer gear, but I was simplifying my setup and hoped to make it work and compromise in some areas.Setup:This process should be very easy assuming all the components play nice. Router was cake. First satellite was cake. Second satellite would never connect. Attempted every method in the manual and live chatting with support. All the system resets, cabling, and attempts couldn't get it connected. Netgear offered to RMA the satellite. Before I did that, I continued to see how the system would perform with the router and satellite I had working.Interface:The interface is quite basic for a system at this price point. If you are wanting this purely for a wifi system and will be using an advanced router for traffic inspection, device control, and parental controls, then Orbi is fine -- pricey but fine. The interface as a whole is not designed well. Given modern websites and slick device interface, this interface would have been good in 2010. The iPhone app is very basic and lacks a majority of the functions you find on the web interface. Not a deal breaker, but a consideration. The web interface is clunky but works overall. Numerous screen refreshes vs a Web 2.0 AJAX interface with minimal refreshes. One device view shows pretty icons but refreshes non-stop making it tough to scan while the device list changes order. It also has limited functionality compared to the real device list in the Security section. This list view only refreshes when requested, but has an odd grouping of allowed, blocked, and not-online devices. I do like the option to block ALL new devices discovered on the network. Beyond that, I found the workflow usable but not intuitive.Features:As mentioned, features are severely lacking at this price point. For a basic wifi system, this is no big deal. One major design flaw is how it handles multiple SSID and Guest wifi networks. Unlike traditional network designs, these networks are NOT truly separated. I didn't spend the time to fully pen-test the layer 2 separation of the SSIDs, but do know that you'll be issuing IP's from the same DHCP scope for all networks. This causes a fair amount of concern if you're familiar with traditional network segmentation and VLANs. In particular, this causes major issues if you plant to integrate with a wired network with multiple VLANs with wired "guest" devices (TV's, cameras, IOT devices, etc). Since everything in the same DHCP scope converges when routing out, you have to choose between wiring this for the Guest network or wiring this for the trusted internal network. It really cannot do both well and maintain proper segmentation -- even if you're trusting Netgear's layer 2 segmentation. I did consider running this in AP mode, but I would have the same separation issues from my Guests vs trusted internal network devices. No parental controls. Wimpy, outdated features like "block this url that you type in". No real firewall rules. Nothing remotely advanced even compared to a Linksys router from 10 years ago. Much work to be done here. Again, not an issue if you JUST need this for wifi.Committing updates can cause lengthy and interruptive delays. Even small changes which should affect wifi would cause my connection to drop or cause the wife to yell "did you kill the network?". Basic settings should NOT cause a network disruption or a 30 second page refresh time.Issues:At this point, I had a bad satellite, clunky interface, lacking features, MAJOR compromise in my network separation model, and poor integration with wired network. I was definitely not in love with Orbi at this point, but I was trying hard to make it work. In fact, I was planning some complicated schemes with my Cisco switches to filter traffic at layer 2 based on IP/mac to keep guest and trusted traffic separate. The final straw was when I went to plug in the working satellite on Ethernet. I have my house wired well, so I have no need to clutter the airwaves with wireless backhaul traffic despite the impressive performance. When I moved the satellite to wired, it caused a loop in the network. From some research, this was supposed to be fixed in the latest version, but I was running all the latest versions on my devices. I could tell instantly when this happened, because the Orbi router CPU went to 90%+ and the interface was unresponsive. This was the final straw, and I questioned my sanity trying to make a $750 setup (although I paid only $599) work with so many compromises. My resolution:Return the Orbi Pro and buy all Ubuiti Unifi gear. I spent ~$1100, but I replaced ALL my existing network gear. New router, firewall, switch, and access points. If you're an advanced network user, Unifi is where it is at and the price point is very reasonable considering Orbi Pro 3 device setup is $750 retail for basically JUST access points. Conclusion:My recommendation is to use Orbi for scenarios where you need mesh and wireless backhaul to the main router and where performance is top priority. If you need network segmentation, integration with wired VLANs, routing, firewall, traffic inspection, etc, you will need to buy a real router and security device in addition to Orbi.
