Excellent price and easy install.
I went to a local auto parts store and was quoted over double the price for these Monroe shocks. Absolutely incredible. Doing the work myself also saved 2 hours of shop work. So along with what we saved on the rears (more than half price again) plus my own labor, replacing all four shocks came out to 1/3 of the total cost if we had sent the vehicle to a shop instead. These shocks and a set of rears were purchased so the Air Ride system on our '98 Explorer could be disabled. The rears were installed first because of the pair, the aft shocks would be the hardest to install. And they were. The fronts come out much easier. The air hose and wires were simply cut from the old shocks. I had the car raised, then removed both front tires. It doesn't matter which order the top nut or the bottom two bolts are loosened off. Because the suspension is in the air, the A-Arms are hanging and the shocks are pinned in. Put a jack under the lower A-Arm and lift it until the shock becomes slack again and can be pulled out.The new shocks are not as wide as the O.E.M. parts. Lower the A-Arm and slide the shocks absorber into place from the bottom. Install the lower two bolts first. Then raise the A-Arm again. This will push the top threaded rod of the shock absorber up into the engine compartment where the top bushing half - backing washer and nut can be installed. Remove the jack; torque up the top nut; put the tires back on and that's it.The new Monroe shocks give a much smoother ride than the old crappy Ford Air Ride shocks.

So far, so good.
The stock shocks on my 1999 Mercury Mountaineer were in dire need of replacement. Since I really don't stress this vehicle all that much, I decided to go with these as an economical replacement.I'm only giving these 4 stars for now, because they've only been on the truck for about a week, so I can't really evaluate longevity. It wouldn't be fair to give these the highest rating before I learn how well they last. Initially, however, the ride and handling has improved, so on that basis alone these are worth a recommendation.Although not really having much to do with these specific shocks, one note I will add is that although it seems like a daunting job, this is a really simple task that only requires some basic hand tools and a secure way to jack up your vehicle. I replaced all 4 shocks on my Mountaineer (I'll do the stabilizing rear shock another day) in an afternoon. If you're even the slightest bit mechanically inclined, there's no reason not to make this a DIY job. This is especially true these days, where you can almost certainly find a complete tutorial online for your exact vehicle, if you want it.

Great improvement in handling
I installed these on my 98 Ford Explorer Sport and they made a huge difference. They really tightened everything up and the truck handles great. I had the original shocks in my truck with 182k miles on them so its safe to say they were pretty work out. It's a lot more fun to drive now. Keep in mind it's a firm ride but and it's a still a truck so don't expect it to turn your truck into a luxury car. If you are looking for a firm and well controlled ride, them these shocks are great. I believe that they also restored the stock ride height in the front of the truck as well. I installed these pared with Monroe 58617 Sensa-Trac Load Adjusting Shock Absorbers in the rear of the truck which is great for boosting up the sagging leaf springs of your Ford Explorer and leveling out the vehicle. This was the best upgrade I have ever done, especially considering the price, even better with the rebate. On my Ford Explorer, installation was easy, I didn't even bother messing with the top rusty shock bolts, I just cut the them flush with a Sawzall and had them installed in less than an hour.

Softer than the ones I removed
Fairly easy to install, but were less resistant to bumps than the ones I removed. These are original equipment replacement, but I should have gotten heavy duty instead.

Great Shocks for the Price
Good shocks so far. Installed on my 2003 Ford Ranger Edge 2wd with torsion bars (2" lift). My retired shocks were definitely out of service so the comparison is a quite biased, but the rebound is rather balanced. At lower speed (15-35mph) the ride is a little stiff. At highway speed (45-65mph) the shocks work very well and absorb the smaller bumps fairly well for a light truck suspension. If you were looking for a top-of-the-line feel for an Average-Joe price, this is what you're looking for depending on your driving habits. In addition, cross-country driving is much better with these shocks than with OEM shocks. As an adventurous young adult, these shocks offer the flexibility to be comfortable off-road and on-road (also depending on your driving habits).

Great shock replacement
I bought these shocks to replace the worn shocks on my 1999 Ford Ranger XLT 4x4. The hardest part of the replacement was removing the rusted out nuts and bolts from the old shocks. After that, they could not be easier to install and comes with new mounting hardware (nuts, bolts, washers, rubber bushings). No extra drilling or modifications required to mount these shocks - They fit perfectly. The ride is smooth, altho it still rides like a truck - which is to be expected. I am very happy I selected these shocks.UPDATE 8/8/2022: Still love these shocks after almost 5 years on them and about 50K miles. Would def buy them again.
