Good value, effective 4G mobile wireless hotspot with SIM included
I needed mobile broadband in our motorhome and didn’t want to use my phone as a hotspot as internet access is required for security cameras when we’re out and about so our phones can’t be left in the van. This unit looked great value and being a little larger than some of the other devices that are available, I’m hoping the battery life will be good if we are off grid. So far, so good although I can’t comment on the battery life yet. It was a doddle to set up. I just popped in the included Smarty SIM (it uses the rather unusual (nowadays) Micro SIM size) and activated it. The admin interface is simple to use and it supports a guest network which is useful if you want to provide internet access for visitors without them being on your network. The text on Amazon suggests the unit only supports up to 10 clients but the admin interface suggests is can support up to 32! I haven't tested that as I don't have that many devices! Really pleased.

Early impressions positive but only after some key lessons learnt during the set up stage
Please note this review is for the ZTE MF920U, CAT4/4G LTE Mobile Wi-Fi device and not any of the other ZTE models you can find on Amazon. Secondly, I am not a computer / technology nerd, so my review is based on my experience of setting up this portable hotspot device and is meant to help others who may consider themselves less technically inclined avoid some of the pitfalls I encountered.I initially bought this device as I had recently acquired a general use SIM (i.e. one can use in a mobile phone for making calls, texting and having data for accessing the internet) from a well known brand to use with my old portable hotspot or in my Samsung Galaxy S6 Lite tablet. Sadly this general use SIM didn't work in my unlocked devices, so I decided to buy this ZTE device as it offered a 4g/LTE service. However, I then discovered the general sim didn't work in it either (i.e. it wouldn't give me internet access when I tried to link my Amazon Kindle, Windows 10 laptop or Samsung tablet to it). Further research and contact with the helpful folks at the general SIM provider led to a suggestion I should change the APN settings in the ZTE device but this also proved unsuccessful.Lesson 1: Use an appropriate 'data only' SIM (that for me meant one that offers a 4g/LTE service which is what this particular ZTE model and my Samsung need). Funnily enough, Smarty offer a 'data only' option for the free Smarty SIM provided with this device!Assuming you can get a good coverage from Smarty in your area (this can be checked on their website) and before you can use it in this device, you need to create an account with Smarty and select a data only sim package via the Smarty website.Once you have created an account you then need to activate the SIM which took just 10 minutes (but you are warned it could take up to two hours).Lesson 2: This ZTE device uses a 'micro' SIM (the Smarty SIM card comes in a standard size but it is easy to punch out a micro or nano sized SIM from it using the perforations provided). Do not try to fit a nano SIM in the device as you will probably have difficulty extracting it when you discover it doesn't work).Lesson 3: The activated Smarty SIM worked first time in the ZTE device and there was no need to change any APN or other settings. An Internet connection was immediately available on my laptop, kindle and tablet once I looked to see what wifi networks were available. Please note that I am not advocating that only a Smarty SIM will work in this device, as I suspect that other 4g/LTE data only SIMS offered by other mainstream providers will probably work too, but after my experiences, I would be a little cautious about trying to use a more 'general' sim that offers phone and text services in addition to data.So now the ZTE is up and running smoothly, and my stress levels have receded, I am finding this ZTE device a delight to use. It is still early days, but so far so good. I am getting a good signal where I live with reasonably fast download speeds that are good enough to live stream television programmes, etc.In Summary: I hadn't realised how careful one needs to be when selecting a mobile wifi pocket hotspot and pairing it up with an appropriate SIM, so I hope this review is helpful if you are considering buying the ZTE MF920U, CAT4/4G LTE Mobile Wi-Fi device.

A Solution for an Issue
The summary first; if you're away from home and need a non-demanding quick internet solution that won't break the bank, this combined with the included Smarty sim-card will do the trick. Just be aware that the battery life isn't amazing (six hours in my experience out of the box) and the device sometimes needs restarting to perform optimally. Now to the longer breakdown. I needed an internet solution that I could move around with me from place to place, and after looking around I landed on the ZTE Mobile Hotspot. 4G was a worry, but 5G models were far too cost prohibitive to consider at the time of writing. However, with a sim that allows tethering like the Smarty one included, you may be able to use a modern smart phone to fulfill the same functions (if not better) than the ZTE.A few reviews I looked at claimed the setup was confusing, but I found it was simple if you followed the instructions - sometimes very literally. An example of this was the sim card itself; the diagram in the book shows exactly the way it needs to face without telling you explicitly. It may be a struggle to get the sim card inside with how recessed the slot is, but a pair of tweezers or other tool should do the trick. It was similarly easy to activate the included sim card, and within twenty minutes of setting up the billing for it (and restarting) the device was functional and I was away.Speed wise I tend to get around 2.5MB/s at its highest - not zippy but I'm used to lower end broadband packages. Ping also tends to be higher than I'm used to when playing the occasional game, even when sitting right next to the device I feel it, but if you're not in a need for ultra fast response times you'll be alright. Youtube works fine at most times of the day even if the quality jumps around and you can do things like sending emails or browsing the web with no troubles. Just keep your expectations tempered when dealing with 4G.The interface for the ZTE is also fine, allowing you to customize and adjust certain parameters to your liking, such as port forwarding or modifying the SSID password. Nothing too fancy.Battery life is the only criticism I have with the device. If I took it with me to another room to sleep I'd wake up to it being fully drained, and it takes about four hours to hit a full charge even when plugged into a USB wall adapter for a phone. If you're going long distances, need it for longer than about six hours or don't have access to a wall outlet, either turn it off when it's not in use or use a portable charger.
