Good start
I have wanted to get into FTA for decades but the expense and fiddly details (which equipment, is it worthwhile, line of sight, etc) got in the way. This kit is a great starting point for ku band FTA. The receiver itself is not perfect (the instructions are weak and the UI is not intuitive enough to make up). The kit does not have everything you need: you will need a compass or some way to aim (I have an engineer compass). The weakest point of this kit is that it has no dish instructions: neither assembly nor aiming. I am good at figuring out how things should go together, however, it consumed extra time and there are at least two configurations for the nuts and bolts. Aiming the dish is extremely important and not common knowledge. In this day of cheap video making and hosting, Satpro.tv could easily have made their own short video or other instructions and included a URL in the box (if not a physical copy in the box). I considered dropping a star for the lack of instructions, but there are not many of these kits available for the beginner and there are some decent free aiming info sources. The kit includes a mounting pole that can be bolted on to a surface (not listed or shown in the picture).Note to Satpro.tv: The lack of dish set up info increases the risk that customers, who have never done this before, will not hit the right or any satellite at all, which will make them extremely dissatisfied in you and your product.Note to beginners: Do not rely on the mobile phone apps for aiming measurements. I have been ten degrees off in my azimuth because of the app/phone. If you use a magnetic compass, make sure your azimuth calculation is for magnetic. Over the course of hours of fiddling, I could get a satellite but no FTA channels until I changed to another target satellite. I thought I finally got Galaxy 19 but that I needed more fine aiming to get more stations. The RC-1978 presents information that looks like it knows which satellite the dish is aimed at, which is not the case. It is actually just going by which satellite you say it is pointed at. Some of the channels eventually included identifying information linking them to ground stations; searching for the call letters turned up SES 2 which matches the FTA channels I am seeing. I hope to get G19 on the next attempt. Do not give up easily and verify the aiming data from multiple sources.Update: I finally got G19 after much more fiddling. The receiver sees 101 channels but much less than fifty have a strong enough signal to watch. Most of the channels I can see are Islamic and useless to me. There are several Christian channels of which at least one is good and one bad. Don't get into this hobby if you are unwilling to fiddle with the adjustments.
