Buy these if you don't use a clipless system
I put these Zefal Christophe toe clips on my touring hybrid a year ago after being unable to get used to the Time system. They work very well with my Merell Moab Ventilator hiking shoes. We can divide pedaling into four quadrants: (1) the downstroke; (2) the "pull back" at the bottom of the rotation; (3) the upstroke; and (4) the "push forward" at the top .Clipless systems provide no advantage over these Christophe clips on both the downstroke and on the "push forward" at the top. You can push down and forward as powerfully as your muscles allow with these Christophe clips.Users of clipless systems will always swear that they develop lots of pull on the upstroke, but studies with stress gauge cranksets do not support that assertion. Only an elite minority of pro cyclists actually develop significant upward pull on the pedals over the course of an entire ride. The best case scenario for mere mortals is to completely unweight the rising pedal. Here, the Christophe clips provide enough centering that it is possible to completely unweight the rising foot on the upstroke without losing position for the push forward and downstroke. So, the Christophe clips definitely improve efficiency as compared to open platform pedals. The one area where they are at a severe disadvantage to clipless systems is during the "pull back" phase at the bottom of the rotation. Legs have powerful muscles available for the pull back, but very little pull back is possible with the Christophe clips. A little bit, but not very much. It is just enough to maintain your foot's position on the pedal, but not enough to help propel your bicycle forward. My one complaint is that only two sizes are offered. My Merells are size 11.5 and end up placed too far rearward. The L/XL size is really not so large. It would be better if the company offered a longer clip or if the packaging included optional spacers and longer bolts for men over size 10.Please vote "yes" if you found this review to be helpful to you. This exercise no longer matters now that the Big River has chosen to ignore the number of "helpful" votes when presenting product reviews in "top rated" order. Great product, reviews on size are ambiguous.
I'm going from a Mt. bike with full clips and straps to these, on a more upright hybrid. My new bike has a higher stand-over height, so I wanted something that would allow quicker entry and exit at intersections - and ice cream trucks! These strapless clips fit the bill perfectly. They keep my feet from slipping forward very well, and even provide a bit of side to side stability. Dont expect too much "Lift" while pedalling, that's not what these clips are for. The straps on traditional clips would do that. These ARE great for aligning your crank for a good first push-of when starting out, etc. The weight of these is enough to invert the pedal when parked, but flipping the pedals around to hit the side with the clip is very easy, especially if you've ridden with clips before. Now, about the sizes and comments in other reviews. It seems the S/M ("M" on the clip itself) is a bit harder to find online. Most sellers are selling the M/L ("L" on the clip). I wear a mens size 9.5 or 10 shoe. According to many reviewers, M/L (L) is the size I should use, so I bought them first. WRONG. In order to keep my feet in the proper peddaling position, with the pedal shaft under the ball of my foot, the larger clip was far too long. When fully inserted in the clip, the ball of my foot was nearly 1 inch forward of the pedal shaft. Bad riding position.I ordered the S/M (M), and now they fit perfectly. Photos included to compare your pedals to mine.

Excellent upgrade for the price!
I love these half toe clips! My first pair lasted four years until I wiped out a few months ago when I rode over a puddle that turned out to be a deep pothole filled with water. I would probably still be running the same pair if not for the considerable impact that finally snapped one of the half clips. Until then, they withstood countless miles of everyday wear and tear on my hardtail MTB turned rigid commuter. These are sold as a pair that comes with all the hardware to mount them onto standard pedals. I love the simplicity of it, no straps to adjust. My feet slide in and out with ease. It's very cost effective, I do not have to buy clipless pedals and a separate pair of shoes just to use on said pedals. Although probably not as efficient as a clipless system, they certainly do help more than just riding on flat pedals. They also help keep my foot in the right place when shifting or cranking along in wet conditions.Don't let my opening paragraph mislead you, these are pretty tough for the price! This is not some soft, cheap or brittle plastic. The resin it's made of is very durable and took quite a bit of force to finally break one of them. Even then, I was more than happy to pay another 8 bucks for the exact same item confident it will last me at least a few years barring another wipe out.

Another Excellent Commuter Bike Accessory
My Christophe metal half toeclips finally died after 30 years. Welcome to the 21st century... these composite clips are an interesting upgrade. They installed easily in exactly the same way as the earlier set, with a pair of anodized bolts/nuts and enough play to align them to the mountain bike pedals. They've stayed firmly attached since installed, riding on a near-daily basis.I've been using toe clips on all of my bikes since the 70's. I can't imagine riding without. These Zefals are larger physically, but just as light as their metal ancestors. The patterned tread keeps your shoes from slipping laterally, even in very wet conditions. The generous toe 'box' easily accommodates all types of trail runners, light hiking boots, sneakers and sandals with ease without tearing up the fronts of your shoes. Their shape also allows for some aggressive pedalling, though they're not as effective as full toeclips, of course.Only con: I'm still getting used to their size which can make contact with the ground while pedalling through curves at an aggressive angle. They're tough enough to survive these pavement scrapes, but I'd rather not end up in a spill.Very highly recommended!Highly Recommended!

Good clips, no instructions included
Worked for me. I am quite new to this stuff and had to find out they screw in to the front of the pedal and do not lay on top of pedal. Seemed wierd but it made sense once installed and makes pedalling feel easier and more efficient. I am size 9 shoe and went for the L/XL clip. I may stick some reflecyive tape on the front as I had to remove reflectors to install these.Definitely worth getting for this price and took 5 mins to install but there are no instructions.Update: Worth noting it can slow you down when going from a standing start as you have to fiddle around getting your foot back in the clip as you move off.

Nice addition to my bike
I have flat pedals, and as I have been getting better at cycling and increasing my cadence, I sometimes notice that my feet don't stay in the same position in the pedals. I considered going clipless, but I am a bit concerned about such a radical change, so these seemed like a good compromise, and as they are fairly cheap, if I didn't get on with them I wouldn't lose much. They come with screws, washers and nuts, and fitting to my flat pedals was straightforward, I just removed the reflective strip and the screws went in through the now available holes, in all just about five minutes to fit. Riding is better now, as the clips keep my feet in the right place even at high cadence or when the road is rough and jumpy. The only slight issue is getting used to getting the second foot in when starting up, as the additional weight of the clip turns the pedal down, but just a matter of practice I guess. Getting the feet out is the same as not having any attachment to the pedal, so no fear of falling to the side because I didn't manage to unclip!

Great Value Strapless Toe Clips
I've fitted these Zefal strap-less front clips to my new Alu pedals. Noting other reviews said the screws/nuts were coming loose, I used blue loctite on screws as they didn't supply nylocs. It dropped them a star. I had to remove the front reflector from my pedals but stuck it back on the Zefals afterwards with hot-melt, which seems sturdy enough. At least I'm still street legal in UK. These only weigh around 60-70g in total and as I've put them on lighter pedals my bike still weighs in just less than 8kg (16 lb). These Zefals work better than I expected, on my Cannondale R900 used for general fitness road use, nothing serious, but will encourage me to get off the saddle more on assents.
