Is this a printed cross stitch pattern or counted?

This is a counted cross stitch kit. I don't usually purchase the stamped/printed ones as the floss doesn't always cover the printed pattern fully.

Would you please tell me why this needs to have a 9v battery? Thank you, Barbara

It's just a cross-stitch kit! I haven't done the stitching yet, but I see no reason to need a battery. Someone must have made a mistake when entering the description for it.

Is this for beginners?

I would say no. Quality is very poor also. I would not order Janlynn again
