The purpose of this bending is that, in use, the saw will now create a cutting kerf that is wider than the thickness of the saw blade; thereby preventing the saw from binding. This saw set has a narrower plunger and is best suited for saws with 12 - 26 teeth per inch (TPI). Put a ruler up to the teeth of your saw and count how many tooth tips can fit in one inch. If the count is between 12 and 26, you got the right saw set. Pressing the tool handles together causes a hardened steel plunger to protrude and push against a steel anvil. Only light pressure is needed. This tool comes with a magnifying glass to make you see more clearly. The product has number 4-12 on the mold, this notation refers to the anvil graduations. It does NOT refer to the Tooth Per Inch for this tool.If you look closely at the anvil of the tool, you will see the stamped graduations going from 4 through 12 (max set is 4 and min set is 12). These graduations are simply to serve as a reference for the user. To use, simply place the tool over the tooth to be set, line up the plunger to bend the right tooth and push the handles together. By turning the knurled knob, the anvil is rotated (graduated from 4 to 12) thereby adjusting the extent of set achieved.

An essential tool, but not up to par.
Using this tool is sort of like having overly thick fingers and trying to thread a small needle. It's inherently clumsy. I suspect low-quality metal alloy (probably Chinese manufactured) requires the tool to be forged with heavy lines in its composition. I have one somewhere in one of my tool boxes which I inherited from my dad, who owned a saw sharpening shop in the fifties, sixties and seventies, and which was a product of an earlier era when manufacturers produced products the results of intelligent research and development, but I can't find it. So, I'm stuck with this thing. There were two options available on line. I ordered both. The other order was ignored. My response to that was "Oh, well..."

4-12 point saw set
The construction and quality of this saw set seems good enough, but the disk only allows for setting 4-12 point saws, and claims to go as fine as 26 point. I was able to set my 13 point saw but I don’t think it will go any finer than that. There may be some trick to doing finer teeth but without instructions it’s anybody’s guess.

That the number setting relates to the teeth per inch.
Dislike that there was no info on what the settings are for. I like how it works smooth movement and easy to control.

Essential tool
Works well. Magnifying glass is worthless, but very useable without it.
