Prairyerth: A Deep Map

Great book, extremely poor edition
I owned the hard copy of PrairyErth, lost in various moves across country, and was moved to read it again. Itβs a beautiful book. However, this ebook is riddled with errors. I guess that it was scanned, which often misread the shapes of letters and created nonsense words. Not deadly, but irritating as mosquito swarms. Buy a printed copy and savor it.

A wonderful exp!oration of the old and new West, all set in Kansas.
This book is a must read for anyone who longs to travel slowly both through time and place so that you can say that you didn't just see a place, you felt it and sought to understand it.

Removing blinders
What we thought was not there is all around - makes me want to go and feel/see for myself. Important.

The Grace of the High Grass Prairie in Kansas
William Least Heat Moon's writing has always been expansive with a richness of the places he has been to and explored combining history, lore, and stories. To me, all of his writings have been this way since his first book, "Blue Highways, A Journey into America." In "PrairyErth," he explores Chase County, Kansas, in vivid detail from its earliest history through to 1991 when the book was published. It is good to know the reality of Kansas is significantly more than just a flat stretch in America.

PrairyErth
William Least-Heat Moon delights in language and takes apparent glee in using as many obscure terms as possible. He must be the most learned man in the room, whatever room he's in. It would be interesting to talk to him in person and contrast his conversation with his writing. Meanwhile, he constructs a multi-layered picture of the middlemost part of the 48 contiguous states of the US that leaves the reader wishing for that much understanding of her own place of origin. This book was the result of remarkable erudition and observation and I have enormous respect for the author's work. I also have a notebook in which I listed all the words I needed to look up. It gets a 3 for narrative flow because the obscure words were so frequent as to be stumbling blocks. I rate it 5 for scholarship and for securing the reader's trust in the truth of it.

For Some of Us a Must Read
If you, like me, think of things you're going to do "soon" or "next year" or whenever - really interesting things like find out what it was like to live on the tall grass prairie, study native customs, foods , medicine, etc., but in your heart you know you'll never have the time or take the time to do it, this book is a must read. The author has applied his research skill, his enthusiasm and dedication, and his wonderful skills as a wordsmith to produce a book which is an acceptable substitute for going and doing yourself. I love this book, and hope I live long enough to read it again.http://www.amazon.com/PrairyErth-Deep-Map-History-Tallgrass/dp/039592569X/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1356796181&sr=1-1&keywords=prairie+earth

The first and the best "deep mapping" book.
I bought this book when it first came out as I had loved "Blue Horizons" by the same author. Unfortunately lent it to someone and never got it back, so delighted to re-acquaint myself will it after all these years. Still one of my favourite books ever - the beautiful prose needs to be read slowly and savoured.
