Great Fun for Fans of Noir, The Thing Man, and B-flicks
These are B movies, shot in plain meat-and-potatoes fashion--no elaborate set-ups or major action scenes, using a few simple sets and shadows to create little corners of the film noir world. These aren't films noir, but mysteries starring a pre-Columbo investigator. Warner Baxter's Dr. Ordway is quietly pushy as he digs into these convoluted little mysteries. One of the best scenes has the camera remaining still throughout one scene, keeping the suspect, an artist, in the foreground as he works on a sculpture--while in the background, Ordway looks around and even leaves the room, knowing the artist will blab away while Ordway looks for evidence. Baxter isn't flashy, he just keeps going--he's the Energizer Bunny of B detectives. While these don't have elaborate production values the pacing never lags. You'll see familiar faces (I won't spoil any except one: NIna Foch has a major role, and it's probably among her earliest), and even the limited use of sets works perfectly for the material. My only complaints are that in maybe three scenes across ten movies, the night scenes are so dark it seems like Ordway has wandered into some lightless abyss, and that some of the plotting is so convoluted that by the end I didn't know or care if all the twists made sense. (I'll have to keep focused the next time I watch the one with the guy whose wives both died--how we made the leap from that to [fake] vampires eluded me.)The transfers are probably as good as these older films could be, and while I have to agree with some of the points made about them, I really have no complaints. I'm not a techie, I can understand some distortion; I wouldn't recommend these to someone expecting pristine prints, but really, that's a non-issue for me--I don't watch these for technical excellence in the transfer, but to enjoy Baxter and his interaction with the casts of these films.I've not described any of the plots because it was fun to come to them fresh.I was very pleased with the fast service, and the discs were as-described. I'll definitely be buying more from this company.Warner Baxter was a big star in his day, and these were programmers shot quickly in his declining years. He comes across as Brian Donleavy's nicer brother. These were just fun, and I got more than my money's worth.

Well Worth the Price/Great Entertainment
With these inexpensive movie collections I would tend to expect poor quality and some duds entertainment-wise but the Crime Doctor set exceeded our expectations. My wife and I love the old mysteries from TCM and the Crime Doctor series was something we never heard of. When we played the first movie of the series, "The Crime Doctor," we were met with the warning of the possible poor video quality and the recommendation to play the DVD on a small screen. We have a home theater setup with a projection system and guess what? The video quality was more than acceptable. There have been a few audio hiccups but not enough to spoil anything. In terms of entertainment the plots and story lines hold up quite well and in fact some of them are ingenious. The first film (Crime Doctor) sets up how the crime doctor, a practicing psychiatrist, no less, came to be. Some of the plots in the subsequent films turn out to be quite intricate and there always is a kind of "psychiatric" twist. As the headline says: Well worth the price and great entertainment.

Enjoyable 40's crime series
Uniquely presented in a classy mini album. I'm a big TCM fan but I've only spotted one Crime Doctor (the first) during more than 20 years of avid watching and title searching. I was impressed with Warner Baxter's performance and wished in vain TCM would show more. This is a really enjoyable collection and just finished the 3rd film. The first 2 films' prints were great; the third watchable but grainy. I would have to say each film was probably remastered as best as possible and they wanted to include all the films. Sometimes, you may prefer to watch a shorter film, but not a little clinker. These are well-paced little gems and Baxter is superb in the role. The balance of the cast is generally quite good, nice twists and turns and an ample amount of suspects and very little comic relief. A very young Lloyd Bridges holds his own surrounded by veterans in the second feature; very convincing as the prime suspect in a murder case.

Compelling mystery drama.
Very faithful reproduction of this series. I hesitated because I was unfamiliar with this title, but was not disappointed. Good quality of the old black and white format. Then, at the end, they included a disc with a little note "A Gift For You" I was so surprised at this generous thought, but was so happy to view a movie I had never seen or heard of, in spite of the fact that it was Raymond Burr (defense attorney role, not Perry Mason) and Angela Lansbury (client). The very few technical issues didn't deter my enjoyment of this drama and it's plot twist. Thank you so much! I will continue purchasing from this seller to add to my growing collection of their DVDs!
