Manfrotto 494RC2 Ball Head with Quick Release Replaces Manfrotto 484RC2

This is a perfect ball- head for small to medium size lenses with DSLR - I use it with D5100 and a 70-300 mm zoom. The load rating is at 13 lbs, so my set up is well within limits. It will take more. But small size might make it best suited for non professional use.What’s good:- It’s Manfrotto and build quality is top notch.- Easy to operate locking and friction control- Comes with a lightweight metallic release plate- Quick release system works well- overall the system is quite “tight” with no “play”To note:I needed a 1/4 to 3/8 adapter screw to mount it on top of a monopod. This is a great product. I needed a ball head with quick release. This worked perfectly for me and I love the product. I did have one issue manfrotto uses a different screw size than silk tripods (which is what I have so I had to get an 1/4 inch to 3/8 inch adapter. Luckily it too was available on amazon.in (Generic 1/4" to 3/8" Convert Screw Adapter for Tripod Monopod https://www.amazon.in/dp/B011ECTGZW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_AAUT7poOcgxXS).Overall will definitely recommend this product.

Nice compact ball head. Would have been nice to have a separate lock for the rotation. currently both locks act on the ball.

I bought this Manfrotto 494RC2 to use with a Sony a6000 series camera (a6300). I also considered other Manfrotto ball heads (e.g. the Micro Ball Head without the plate) but in the end chose this one because I'm less likely to drop or scratch the camera with the quick release plate. Previously I had a compact camera and a Cullmann Micro Ball Head CB2 series (model CB2.7).Build Quality-----------------Build quality is very good, I can't see that anything will pop off or crack or break. Both knobs seem to be a hard thermoset or composite plastic with perhaps fibre-reinforced. They seem very tough. One knob adjusts/locks the ball (and rotation; it will need to be tightened to unscrew the ball head from the tripod), and the other adjusts the friction to help support heavy camera/lenses when the ball is loosened with the first knob. The friction setting can be set to very loose so that it feels there is virtually no friction, to so tight that the head won't move (obviously don't misuse the friction knob, use the first knob to fully lock the ball).All important bits of the 494RC2 are metal, possibly aluminium or some alloy, I can't say. Torx screws hold bits together, not cheap pop rivets. There is a brass-coloured safety lever to prevent accidental opening of the release plate. In use, it can be opened by one hand, by putting your thumb on the safety lever and the release lever, and pushing against the safety lever by angling the thumb. Basically it is straightforward. And no risk of accidentally opening it. The safety lever has a rubber cap on it, but (this is just speculation) it does look like that may come off with wear-and-tear. It wouldn't be a big deal if it did come off, it would still be comfortably usable or place a heatshrink cap on it.Using the Mini Ball Head---------------------------------This mini ball head has a 3/8" fitting for tripods. However, I don't use a tripod (apart from a small desk one), and I use a Cullmann clamp (see photos). My clamp and desktop tripod has a smaller 1/4" fitting. So, some adapter is needed. The one that is intended to directly fit is Manfrotto MN-088LBP. It isn't cheap, but less risk of it breaking compared to no-name ones I feel. The MN-088LBP fits perfectly (see one of the photos).The release plate fits the camera with no scratches since there is a soft yet firm and textured rubberized underside. The camera then fits the ball head by putting it into place at an angle and then straightening the camera. The release lever snaps into place itself but I still gently push against the lever afterwards to get extra confirmation. It of course is rock-solid otherwise it wouldn't be doing its job.Size Comparisons-------------------------I loved the little Cullmann CB2 series ball head (CB2.7). I used it all the time with my compact camera. It was so small I could put it in a pocket or bag, and it was lightweight too (85g). The Manfrotto 494RC2 weighs 290g (without the quick release plate because that would be screwed to the camera). So it is more than three times the weight, and takes up at least three to four times as much volume at an estimate. So I'm unhappy about the size, but this is the drawback to having a heavier camera. My Sony plus lenses is far heavier than a point-and-shoot, and the Cullmann one is not designed to handle that much weight. Furthermore it is easy to have the Cullmann one not tightened enough by accident. So, I intend to stick with the 494RC2.Summary--------------If you want a release plate and the ability to support mid-sized cameras upwards, then this mini ball head is a good choice. It is well-built and to get most use of it don't forget to purchase the 1/4" to 3/8" adapter if you have 1/4" clamps or mini tripods.

Vorneweg: Ich nutze den Kugelkopf zusammen mit der Manfrotto 035 Superklamp und der Manfrotto Adapterplatte 208 Hex auf 3/8 Zoll.Ich habe den Kugelkopf gekauft, da er eine Schnellwechselplatte und eine Friktionskontrolle hat. Bisher habe ich die Kugelköpfe CB6 und CB5 von Cullman verwendet, die an meinen Nanomaxstativen verbaut sind.Gegenüber diesen ist der Manfrotto 494RC2 Kugelkopf mit Schnellwechselplatte eine Klasse für sich. Sollte er auch sein, da er deutlich teuer ist.Durch die Friktionskontrolle lässt sich die Schwer-/Leichtgängigkeit gut einstellen. Bei mir rutscht mir die Kamera nicht einfach weg.Die Schnellwechselplatte ist stabil und lässt sich, wie in anderen Rezensionen schon beschrieben, mit einer Hand bedienen. Die zusätziche Sicherung verhindert, dass man die Arretierung einfach oder aus Versehen lösen, beim Einschnappen sitzt die Platte fest, es wackelt nichts.Auch ist die Platte so klein, dass bei meiner Canon 500d das Batteriefach geöffnet werden kann.Das halte ich für einen sehr großen Vorteil: Bei Batteriewechsel muss die Platte nicht abgeschraubt werden!Das Absinken der Kamera ist sehr gering, mit etwas Übung geht das in Fleisch und Blut über: Bildausschnitt etwas höher wählen, festschrauben, Kamera loslassen und der Bildausschnitt stimmt.Was mich zu dem Punkt Abzug bewegt hat:Da ich den Kugelkopf mit der Adapterplatte am Klemmstativ nutze, war es mir wichtig, dass die Klemmschraube nicht die Beweglichkeit einschränkt.Anfangs war es auch so. Der Kugelkopf war bei Stellung 1/4 nach 12 fest. Eine halbe Drehung hat von lose bis fest gereicht. Nach einigem Nutzen stellt sich die gewünschte Festigkeit erst bei 1/2 1 ein, so dass der Feststellhebel mit der Wechselplatte in Berührung kommt und die nötige Flexiblität fehlt. Daher muss ich vorher genau die Positionierung und Ausrichtung festlegen, da ich nicht mehr in alle Richtigen so flexibel bin.Doch das ist "Meckern auf hohem Niveau".Bei anderen Stativen ist das nicht weiter von Bedeutung, daher kann ich den Kugelkopf empfehlen und bereue den Kauf nicht.

I wanted a way of using my SLR on a monopod in portrait orientation as well as landscape, and came to the conclusion that one answer was a ball head. The reviews of the Manfrotto 494RC2 were very favourable and so I purchased one. As usual delivery from Amazon was prompt and I was keen to see what the product was like. It did not disappoint. A beautifully made piece of kit, very sturdy and durable.The friction control and locking mechanisms work smoothly and hold the ball head very firmly in position. There is no movement or slack whatsoever. The ball head fitted easily onto my monopod (Davis & Sanford) with the 3/8ths threaded connector and locked into place once fully threaded.I screwed the plate onto my Pentax K5 II, the locating of the plate onto the ball head takes a little practice, and it is possible to get it improperly mounted, and this is evident by movement of the plate once located, I have not yet determined how this is achieved, However properly mounted the camera plate is locked firmly in place without a hint of play.My first real test was while on holiday in Devon during a veritable gale blowing in off the sea at Man O' War next to Durdle Door. I was videoing some brave young people kitted out in wet suits, hard hats and lines, out on a rocky outcrop, jumping into the heavy sea and getting drenched by the crashing waves. The 494RC2 performed admirably, despite my own inability to stop the camera moving in the incessant gale, it literally was impossible to counter the force of the wind, but the ball head did better than me, and resolutely held firm.Conclusion, a well made, well designed, substantial device, not cheap but well up to the job, and worth the outlay if you want a ball head that really is "The Business".

Ich suchte einen passenden Kugelkopf für das  Joby GorillaPod SLR-Zoom , hauptsächlicher Einsatzzweckfür unterwegs, spontane Selbstportraits per Selbstauslöser als Paradebeispiel.Das Gorillapod alleine war mir dafür zu wenig, die fummelige Schrauberei für ein einziges Fotoschien mir meistens den Aufwand kaum wert.Meine wichtigsten Anforderungen an den Kugelkopf waren:- Eine leichte und kompakte Bauweise- eine Kupplung mit Wechselplatte für den schnellen und unkomplizierten Auf- und Abbau---ERSTKONTAKT---Der Kugelkopf macht direkt nach dem Auspacken einen positiven Eindruck. Die Verarbeitung wirkthochwertig, nichts wackelt, auf den ersten Blick haben sich meine hohen Erwartungen erfüllt.Für die Montage auf dem Gorillapod benötigt man eine Adapterschraube von 1/4" auf 3/8", die zumGlück im Lieferumfang des Gorillapods enthalten war.Die Wechselplatte ist schnell auf die Kamera geschraubt, hält ausgezeichnet und stört kaum.Die Montage der Kamera auf dem Kugelkopf ist sehr einfach und schnell, die Wechselplattemuss nur auf der einen Seite aufgesetzt und anschließend auf der anderen Seite niedergedrückt werden.Der Verschluss schnappt automatisch zu und die Kamera sitzt bombenfest auf dem Stativ - Perfekt!Zum Lösen der Verbindung muss der Verschlusshebel aufgedrückt werden, ein zweiter kleinerSicherungshebel muss zum Entsperren gleichzeitig betätigt werden um ein ungewolltes Lösen zu verhindern.Trotz des zweiten Hebels kann der Mechanismus problemlos mit einem Daumen bedient werden,der Verschlusshebel bleibt in Offenstellung stehen.Der Feststellhebel für den Kugelkopf fixiert die Kugel optimal, mit einer kleinen Schraube kann noch derWiderstand für den geöffneten Zustand eingestellt werden. Die Stellung des Feststellhebels kann zusätzlichdurch Herausziehen verändert werden.---FAZIT---Ich bin mit dem 494RC2 von Manfrotto sehr zufrieden, er ist kompakt, stabil und einfach zu bedienen.Der ideale Begleiter für unterwegs, wenn man nicht zu viel Ballast mit sich herum schleppen will.Volle Punktezahl und volle Empfehlung von mir. C'est indéniablement une très bonne rotule, mais puisqu'on est ici pour laisser un avis critique alors je vous ferais part de mes difficulté avec le frein qui n'est pas facile à maitriser.En effet celui ci est assez progressif mais manque de franchise quand on le sert un peu plus fort. Avec un 40D et un 70-200 f4L le frein est un peu juste. Obligé de le desserrer un peu pour garder un mouvement fluide sans à-coup mais obligé de le resserrer si l'on veut éviter que la rotule soit libre de ses mouvements.Il est donc assez difficile avec du poids d'avoir un mouvement fluide mais restreint dans sa latitude.Pour le reste c'est un vrai plaisir d'être passé à une rotule, l'utilisation du trépied prend une autre dimension et la qualité de fabrication se fait vraiment ressentir.Le plateau rapide c'est juste du bonheur. J'aime énormément le fait qu'il se verrouille automatiquement dès qu'on viens placer le plateau sur la rotule. La vis de fixation pour l'appareil est un peu dure mais c'est tout neuf, elle s'assouplira certainement avec le temps (ceci dit en attendant je crains pour le bout de mes doigts par grand froid dehors car c'est tout en métal et quand les doigts ripent là dessus...).La sécurité du plateau rapide est très bien et il n'y a aucun risque de libéré l'appareil contre sa volonté.A noté, une fois la rotule serré sur la colonne du trépied, elle pivote sur elle même temps qu'elle n'est pas verrouillée, pratique pour les panoramique, tant que le frein est suffisant pour ne pas trop bouger.Un bon achat mais j'y réfléchirai à deux fois avec une 496RC2 un peu plus robuste à cause du frein (d'où l'étoile en moins).
