Works but has a useability issue
I purchased this item to replace a Davis Industries telescoping boat hook that would no longer lock when you twist the sections. And worse, it wouldn't retain the end section when it wasn't locked. It would just fall away and require a diver to go find the end. This item is an improvement over it's predecessor. It has two telescoping sections instead of one, so it has a longer reach but about the same stored length. It does lock when you twist it, and it has a feature that holds the telescoping sections captive if they are extended to the maximum without being locked. So you shouldn't be loosing sections if they come loose. However, the bad news is that the sections don't lock firmly. If the pole is twisted even slightly the end section will abruptly release. This was extremely frustrating while I was working overhead on a recent fishing trip. The boat hook collapsed 4 times before I finished the task I was trying to accomplish. So, bottom line, it works. But it would be better if the manufacturer improved the twist-lock mechanism and made it more gradual to engage/release and more robust so it holds better.

UPDATED - Sort of "A better choice!" after all.
I have two 8' telescoping boat hooks, and I wanted one that extends to 12' to use with a brush for washing and for reaching poles in large slips. This is a great alternative to the West Marine brand that my other poles are. It's less expensive ($35 vs. $60), has all of the same functionality, but is also sturdier when extended and has a comfort-grip handle that the others lack. I'm very pleased with the product, and I suspect that you will be, too.UPDATE as of October 1, 2018: As you can see, I was initially thrilled with this product. Unfortunately, after less than 3 months of ownership, I was doing some routine cleaning with a deck brush attached when the tip snapped off completely. Needless to say, this SHOULD NOT HAPPEN! As I mentioned above, I have owned two West Marine brand poles that I have used extensively with a deck brush for 12 years, and I have never had a problem with them. That this pole would break after only a handful of uses tells me that the design is flawed and/or the plastic used is not of good quality. Now that the tip has snapped off, it's also useless for fending off other boats because there's no rubber tip either. BOTTOM LINE: If you plan to use this with a brush for cleaning, invest in a pole with a sturdier tip.YET ANOTHER UPDATE (also October 1st): After contacting the company, they are sending me a new tip free of charge (Lifetime Warranty). They were very cooperative, so I cannot complain about their customer service. I do believe that the tip could and should be made more solidly for use with a brush, though.

Easy operation, sturdy construction, and no slips!
Smooth extension, easily twists and untwists, total extension is still fairly sturdy even with only ~6" of overlap between segments.Durable construction, feels rugged but still lightweight (and floats!)Most importantly, when twisted to locked position, it doesn't slip at all while pulling lines. We've all had that moment when a careless crewmember doesn't tighten the extension, and it either slips out completely if it doesn't have a stop or it slips and you lose the mooring ball and have to start over. The tight operation of this hook will prevent me from having to throw a bowman overboard ever again! Well, that's probably an exaggeration, but at least I won't throw them overboard for a book hook failing.I have 4 boat hooks now including this one, and this is by far my favorite.

heavy duty but hard to lock the inner tube
This pole is more heavy duty than my other boat hooks. But there is one annoying defect I've noticed so far, The inner section (smaller) of pole must be extended almost all the way in order for the twist to lock to grab hold of it. It seems that inner tube must be tapered and its not wide enough to grab by the twist to lock, until its fully extended. Which means when you carry it around un-extended, the inner tube is free to slide out just when you don't want it to.

Does not float for long
Just received the pole last week and used it for the first time this weekend. Unfortunately it rolled off the back of the boat while docking and into the water. It quickly floated out of reach. While waiting for another boat to pull in and grab it for us it sunk to the bottom. Total time floating was approximately 2 minutes. I bought this because it says it floats. Now I'm out a docking pole and 40 some bucks.

Lasted one use! Seller made good by replacing
We received this boat hook three months ago and used it once with no problem. Needed it yesterday while on the river and the adjusting cams on the narrowest part is not functioning since it's stuck in the extended position .Update. Changing to three stars instead of one. Seller sent new item and it is working fine at delivery. I appreciate the attention. Thank you WindRider.

Fantastic product at a fantastic price
Fantastic product at a fantastic price! Plus it floats! This is the reason I was searching for a new boat hook in the first place, mine fell overboard! This boathook is well made and heavy duty! I sail singlehanded a lot and this boat hook really comes in handy when leaving the dock and is more help when I am returning to dock! I love the fact that it floats plus it has a long reach when I am docking I don't have to risk getting too close to the seawall by motoring. I kill the motor early and with the long reach of this great boathook I can easily reach the seawall and pull my s24 ft sailboat in easily and safely! I love it so much I bought two of them for times when I have crew aboard!
