Very helpful thermometer
I recently decided to resurrect the old family tradition of making Rosettes for the holidays. This is a type of Scandinavian cookie that is deep fried and requires the temperature of the oil to be kept fairly consistent. Being that I do not have a deep fryer I needed a way to determine what the temperature was and help me keep it there. Hence my purchase of this thermometer. This thermometer has a very solid metal body surrounding the actual thermometer element which protects it from the back, bottom and top. However the face of the thermometer is protected only by being recessed as compared to the ridges on the sides, bottom, and top. This means as with all glass thermometers that you need to be careful. The body itself is solid enough that I feel pretty safe about putting it into a tub with my other Rosette making items, as long as this is on top and I don't jostle the tub too much. I may wind up packing this away by wrapping it in a towel. The back of the thermometer has a metal clip that can be slid up and down the body of the thermometer to position it on the edge of whatever container you need it in. The clip is pretty snug to the body and depending on your needs you may need to bend it out a bit. The pot I was using this in the first time had a very pronounced curve at the bottom edge which pushed the thermometer out from the edge and made the hold of the clip to the body somewhat tenuous until I adjusted it.Temperatures are presented in both Fahrenheit and Celsius and are easily readable. The thermometer element is red and is easily viewable from several angles, though if you try and read from a wrong angle you will not be able to see the temperature at all.Since this is my first candy thermometer I cannot speak as to its accuracy, but in using it I did find that it helped me maintain a fairly constant temperature for my Rosettes that allowed them to crisp up very nicely. In my opinion this thermometer is a worthwhile purchase for the kitchen. I sense many baking adventures with it in my future.

Very pleased with Wilton quality.
I purchased this as a gift. I have used my Wilton candy thermometer for many years, and have never had any problems whatsoever with the accuracy of the readings while I am boiling sugar. A definite Yes as far as recommending. Also, it was an excellent sale.

Hard to clean
I love this thermometer. It is accurate and easy to use. My problem is that you have to hold it or let it rest up against the pot since there is no way to clip it onto the pot. It is also a little hard to clean. I used it for caramel and candied apples and can't get the candied apple off the thermometer. Hope it doesn't affect the temperature.

Very nice candy thermometer, easy to read
Candy temps are labeled and indicated well for easy monitoring of your fabulous creations. Alcohol in the glass is spread out for a nice wide red bar to read where you are at in the heating. Tried a digital unit that was sold as 'meat and candy', POS is what it was. This company has been making these things for years, and their product works without fail, it hangs there just waiting to make some goodies!Only downside on this unit (as with others) is the clip that keeps it on the pot. It does come off, at times, when you don't want it to, and can be difficult to keep on the pot of you have a staggered lip.

Disappointed
I was excited to get a Wilton product when I broke my last candy thermometer and anxious to test it out. So today I made my husband’s favorite, peanut butter fudge. As I watched the thermometer and stirred it seemed to get stuck at 220 degrees and I needed 240. I could tell by the texture of the candy that it was getting too hot so I grabbed my instant meat thermometer and tested it. It hit 240 on the meat thermometer and was still going up when I pulled the pan off the stove and added the peanut butter in an attempt to save it. Too late. The fudge is sugared because it got too hot. I’ll have to replace this thermometer before I start any Christmas baking.I thought Wilton was a top name, but this is very disappointing.

Looks sturdy and easy to use
Appears to have a strong slide where the instrument attaches to the side of a cooking pot. Only thing I don't know yet is how long the lettering will last after preparing a few batches of candy.
