Great as a low-powered, budget-oriented AVR if you have realistic expectations
This is a decent low-mid end receiver. For those expecting this to be a powerhouse loaded with options, I'm sorry, but you're simply looking at the wrong line of Denon receivers. I am not using this unit for any video capabilities whatsoever, just as a pure sound receiver. My S500BT is operating as my PC surround sound unit. I wasn't looking for heavy power or options, rather a nice, cheaper AVR that can handle its duty as a PC-connected unit well. It's powering 4x Micca MB42X bookshelfs and 1x Micca MB42X-C center, with a Polk PSW10 handling the [moderate] lows. The lack of power does show, given that these speakers are not efficient (85/86db). I have my unit turned up to 75 with my PC set at half for room-filling sound. They stillThis does not have WiFi capability, rendering firmware updates a hassle (USB). The AUX port does not, in fact, support the iPhone 5. I cannot speak for any other models, but it clearly advertises it as not supporting iPod/iPhones. Some products out there advertise this as well, but they still work with the iPhone. I like to test this on such units. Fortunately, the bluetooth works great, if I decide to stream from my phone.Setup is painless, the [pink noise] auto setup takes a while, but it's pretty effective in setting distances, levels, and crossovers. I usually run the auto-setups and follow up with manual fine-tuning. I do not have AVR-based subwoofer volume issues. No overheating. No erroneous auto-off. I also don't use the ECO mode at all.The wire connections in back are typical spring-loaded clamps of lower-level units. If you want a decent, cheap AVR for a not-very-powerful system, this will most likely fit the bill. If you're looking for options, power, and features, look elsewhere. My main receiver is a Denon X2100W. This unit doesn't even come close to it in features or power, but it does perform very well, as I had more realistic expectations and requirements to be filled.

A great unit with a recurring thermal reset issue. (+ repair service killed the AM radio function)
I have had an overheat sensor that keeps cycling through a reset routine. When it first occurred, I noticed that I had put too many other items on top of the unit, and it was not allowing the correct dissipation of heat.So I constructed a platform about 1.5" above the top of the unit to allow free breathing. It helped some, but I am not able to start up the unit (it goes into a relay-clicking looping cycle) if it has been sitting in 'standby' mode (3.2 watts) for a significant length of time. For instance, I can feel some mild heat if it has been sitting in standby mode overnight. My current fix is to switch off the line power when I am not using it. This way the unit is completely cold in the morning, and will start as it was designed to do.I think that the standby power consumption is excessive. I can run a radio at very satisfying volume level on 1 watt, so 3+ watts just to wait for the 'ON' command, strikes me as a bit of a waste.[NOTE: Sent the unit off for repair (Mobile PC, Inc, San Diego, CA) for the thermal issue ($35 postage). They said they did a firmware upgrade, and I can certainly tell that the unit is using less heat. In the repair process, they ALSO KILLED MY AM TUNER that previously had been no problem at all. Subsequently (two months later), the thermal issue has returned, but so far, it is not absolutely fatal. My intent in buying this unit was to save a few bucks on a nice piece of equipment, by getting a 'reconditioned' unit. But be aware that reconditioned equipment comes with a SHORTER guarantee, when what you actually need is a LONGER guarantee. My experience with the repair facility has been poor, and that buying referb gear is a much greater risk that I had previously assumed.]Otherwise, the unit is well priced (originally), works just great (when the thermal issue is not killing the unit), has a sensitive FM radio, sounds very good. The thermal issue has returned and is a MAJOR problem!-gnuB

What a reciever for the price!!!
I got this receiver to place my Sony STR DH-510 that I somehow shorted out the hdmi ports, I have very lil down sides about this Denon, but its nothing I sould complain about such as the component hookups, or all the speaker wire connecters being push tabs....on the up side I have a lil more features than the Sony besides not able to list a device plugged into the inputs, able to fine tune speaker placements using the mic, or OSD that the sony never had... I just hear things I wasn't able to with the sony.. even though when I turned on the PS4 the receiver went right to the input I had it plugged into.. no biggie on that for the Denon.. its my first Denon receiver I ever had.. I had older denon devices though.. Ohh did I mention the Bluetooth works like a charm.. HAHA I used my cell phone, my tablet, and my PS VIta right into the thing... I havnt used the USB yet but I'm sure it performs just like the Bluetooth does.. if I notice anything else i'll be back here to make changes

Not bad - but maybe spend a little more and get something better.
This is almost, but not quite as good as was hoping. First, the sound is great (I am in no way an authority on sound), the setup was easy, and it has more than enough input for all my devices. One i used the sound meter thing to balance out the sound, it was great. Now, the bad side is that i use a computer HTPC for watching the majority of my content, but also use an Xbox and Blueray DVD player. I have found that on occasion switching between devices causes some kind of mismatch and i sit there watching a blank screen until the no input detected thing starts floating across the TV. Turning things off and on fixes it, and it doesn't always happen. Usually i just have it on the Media center and leave it on and don't worry about it.
