Functional. Hints on assembly. (***Some bugs now fixed.)
I purchased 5 of these to go with other cubes of different manufacture but similar dimensions. I use them as a platform for a queen sized mattress, and as dressers. I have been using them through multiple moves for a least 6 but probably more like 10 years. I have a bunch of this stuff. So I am experienced at assembly, etc. It took me about 40 minutes per unit to build. These were shipped very promptly from Amazon, albeit in excessively large packaging. (***more recent purchase not in excessive packaging.)(***I ended up buying 6 wide two drawer units, two cube two drawer units, and two wide door front units. In all of that the parts list was perfect except for one time when I got one extra screw. Pretty good if you ask me. None were damaged and they do as advertised.)The only tools required for construction are a phillips screwdriver and a hammer (see #1 below)My one real gripe is that there is one step in which the wood for the drawers nearly always splits (see #3 below) this clearly must be less strong, but they still feel quite sturdy. You could use wood glue to get it to full strength, but it would be annoying, and really they should fix this bug. (*** The most recent one of these I ordered came with different screws, and I got no splitting at all. Yay!)The assembly instructions are a bit less clear than they ought to be, but assembly is pretty much common sense. When attention is paid, they fit together very well, and the drawers slide as they should. If you are really poor at putting things together, you may find these frustrating. The method for stacking units and keeping them from sliding is better than on others I have used. It is simple and functional.I do have some hints for getting good results:1) As mentioned in another review, the directions imply that the plastic sliders press into place on the side panels. No, they don't, not unless you are Hercules. In order to get them in, you need to really pound on them. So what you need is a hammer, a flat surface to put the side panel on (floor does nicely), and one of the small pieces of thick cardboard that are inside the packing for the product. A) press the center part of the plastic slider into the holes, they do go most of the way in okay. B) line up the ends with their holes and put the piece of cardboard on top and pound them in with a hammer. The cardboard protects the plastic from damage. Even with a hammer you will have to whack them pretty hard to get them to seat. Once they are totally flat against the panel, you are done. I did not damage a single one, and there were 20 in my assembly of five of these units, so don't be afraid to hit them. Others who reported drawers that did not slide well may not have gotten these pieces completely seated.2) The main cabinet assembly is a breeze from that point.3) When assembling the drawers, DO NOT over tighten the screws. The composite board that the drawers are made of WANTS to split. As long as you do not over tighten and strip the wood entirely, this splitting is tolerable (unfortunate, bad manufacture, but tolerable). You WILL get some that split. No matter how carefully and delicately I worked. I still got 30 - 40% splitting. The final result seems quite sturdy in spite of this, but it is irksome. (*** No splitting in most recently purchased cube.)4) When you are putting the drawer front on, you can improve your cosmetic and functional results by following this procedure. It makes a small but visible difference. Put the end screws in part way, so the front still has a bit of wobble. Take the drawer and put it into the cabinet in the top position. Look at the crack above the drawer, you can make subtle adjustments so that the crack is the same width all the way from end to end. Hold the front, remove the drawer, and tighten the screws in this position. Put in the remaining two screws. For some reason it seemed like I almost always had to nudge the left side up a millimeter or two. But the final result looked very good, and the drawers did not interfere with each other.5) The diagram of the screws for attaching the handles shows pointy ended screws. Nope. The screws they include are flat tipped. They take a little effort to get in, but they do work fine and tighten down very nicely. (*** pointy screws this time matched picture, one kinda stripped out of the handle but I got it to work.)6) The thick screws they give to prevent the drawers from pulling out, are fine threaded and want to go in crooked. They are easy enough to get straight, but you have to pay attention. Do not over-tighten these screws or your drawers will not slide. If this happens just back them out a few turns. (***no problem this time.)In conclusion. If you are looking for fine furniture, forget it. If you are looking for something functional, these can do the job. They have a clean, neat appearance. If using in a child's room, you may want to put safety corner protectors on, the corners are hard and fairly sharp. Paying a small extra bit of attention to detail in assembly can make all the difference between a good and poor result. (*** they do seem to have fixed the bugs.)

the worst experience ever
I have ordered a (NEW) Foremost 327901 Modular Large 2-Drawer Cube Storage System, White. What I received was totally unexpected and disappointed. The item I received was (USED). I noticed that there were parts that have been already brought together! I directly suspected that the item is used, NOT new. I continued building the parts together and in the end I discovered that something wrong with the base of the drawer (It does not fit with the other parts) I felt soooo sorry for the time and energy I spent trying to built the pieces together.I am a PhD student with sooo many exams and papers deadlines, and I have health issues and regular doctor appointments (spending my time and my money is not an easy thing to do)I couldn't write a review at that time but every time I see this trash in my room I feel so sad that I couldn't return it back to them at the time. That in addition to their way of leaving the order up the stairs (because it is too heavy for them!!!!!)my plan (before discovering the issues in this piece) was to buy the other pieces one after the other, BUT now I will NEVER buy anything from these people NEVER EVER , the worst experience ever. DON'T WASTE your money and time.

Mostly Good
I purchased two of these Large 2-Drawer units and 4 of the open cubes. Mostly I really like them, but there are a few things that I would tell a buyer to be aware of. First, what they don't show you with this unit is that the back is not finished. There are four boards making up the top, bottom and two sides of the unit. The wood itself seems fairly sturdy, but surprisingly (in a good way) light. It's actually composed of a woody layer that is somewhere between plywood and particle board sandwiched between two thick layers of press-board. Each board is finished with a white melamine-like finish on the two broad surfaces, with plastic edging glued along three of the four edges. That means that once assembled the back side of the unit is left with four unfinished edges (The thick press-board panel that you insert into slots to form the back of the unit is unfinished on one side and white on the other, so you can turn the white side out). This means that if you want to use a combination of these units to form legs on a craft table like I am, that you have to come up with some way to cover up the unfinished edges. The 15" x 15" cube units are constructed in the exact same way. As for quality, the edges where the melamine meet the plastic edging is not always cleanly finished - many of my boards had tiny chips in the melamine making the edges seem a bit ragged. Also one unit had a cracked/broken portion of plastic edging that I had to glue back in place. One unit had a melted corner where it looked like a small hot roller had caught on the unit and melted into the plastic. Many of the screw holes were not cleanly cut, so there is missing bits of melamine finish around the holes. All of these problems looked like they happened at the factory not during shipping. I ordered these through Amazon and when the boxes arrived they looked like they had been through a war zone. It turned out though, that this was just loose/sloppy outside packing. The units themselves were in their original manufacturing boxes inside and these boxes showed no damage at all - no dents, scratches, or anything. There was protective foam and stuff around the individual unit boards and none of this looked marred in any way either. While they seem strong enough for my purposes (light to average use), I'm not sure I'd recommend them for use in a kids room. I haven't actually stored anything in the units yet, but I don't think the melamine finish would hold up to a lot of wear and tear and I think the drawer glides seem a bit on the low-budget side. All in all, I would say I'm glad I bought these. They are pretty decent for the price, but you are getting what you pay for, so don't expect them to be perfect or first class.
